District lines for U. S. Congress and Florida Senate, drawn after the 2010 census, have been declared unconstitutional by the Florida Supreme Court. They have been re-drawn by the Florida Supreme Court.
In 2010, Voters passed the Fair District Amendments , placing standards in the Florida Constitution which the Florida Legislature had to use when drawing district lines. Those standards state that districts must be contiguous, compact, use natural geographic boundaries and borders when possible, and not benefit one political party over another. Also districts must not deny minorities the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. Districts must be of equal population to adhere to the “one person, one vote” standard. The Florida Legislature is charged with drawing these district lines following every census. After years of litigation, the Florida Supreme Court determined that the guidelines were not followed and that the lines must be re-drawn.
