Module 1: Introduction
When an English language learner (ELL) enters our school system for the first time, how do we decide which academic programs will be most appropriate for the child’s academic and language needs? How do we figure out how proficient he or she is in English? And what kinds of academic history do we take into account? How do we then measure that student’s academic growth and language development? And how do we know when a student no longer needs the support of the ESOL program? These are important questions that drive the academic success of our ELLs.
In this unit, we will discuss the answers to all of these questions and develop a deeper understanding of the assessments that are used in Broward for identification, placement, and programmatic assessment of ELLs.
