Module 3: Accommodations for ELLs

Additional Information on Testing Accommodations for ELLs

Bilingual/ESOL Department provides information on required accommodations for assessment and instruction through trainings for ESOL Curriculum Contacts, teachers, administrators, and support staff. District ESOL resource teachers may visit schools and classrooms to assist in the implementation of this requirement.

These accommodations offered to ELLs during statewide assessments are part of the ESOL Instructional Strategies Matrix (e.g., A-5 Flexible Setting, A-1 Bilingual Dictionaries, A-4 Flexible Scheduling, A-6 Timing, and A-2 Home Language Assistance). Accommodations must be used during regular classroom instruction throughout the year as appropriate for the ELLs’ needs.  The ESOL Contact at each school location identifies these accommodations and informs instructional staff each year.  For more information, please see section 5 of the ESOL Handbook which can be found at esol.browardschools.com

The flexible setting accommodation requires schools to notify parents. Flexible Setting Accommodation letter is available for this purpose in English, Haitian-Creole, Portuguese, and Spanish.
