Module 2: Accountability and Assessment

“Assessment determines what students know and can do. Accountability then holds states, districts, schools, and students responsible for what students know and can do. Together, assessment and accountability form a system ensuring that results can be reported back to the community-at-large” (National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition, 2006).

What is the purpose of assessment?

• Identification as English language learner
  
• Annual progress in English language proficiency (including attainment of English language proficiency)
  
• Achievement in the content areas (National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition, 2006)

Statewide and District Assessments

The State of Florida measures the academic progress of ALL students including ELLs. Students are assessed in different subject areas at various grade levels.
