The Silent Epidemic 3/06
It is often assumed that the students identified as intellectually gifted would be a homogeneous grouping of students. In truth, depending on their IQ range, they may be a very disparate group of students with very different needs. On what appears to be the opposite end of any discussion of gifted would be those considered underachieving gifted students. This week we will compare and contrast the differences between gifted, moderately gifted, and highly gifted. Along with presenting ideas for how to meet the varying social, emotional, and academic needs of these different subgroups of gifted, we will explore the reasons for underachievement of some and what can be done to reverse this behavior.
