BEST PRACTICE #4

Scaling Up BEST Practices

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

School improvement is based on a continuous improvement model, using research-based accepted best practices, which align with student achievement needs, insure student progress, and may be revised when appropriate.

Goals

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving student achievement and why was this area chosen?

The content area that will be the focus for improving student achievement is English Language Arts and Math.  These content areas were chosen as the student population received a proficiency score % in ELA.  Forty-four percent (44%) received learning gains which was a 2% drop from the previous year. Students in the lowest quartile dropped by 9 points for a proficieny score of 28%.  In Math 41% were proficient 44% received learning gains (-1 decrease) and 35% of students received proficieny in the lowest quartile which was constant from the previous year.

What specific BEST Practice(s) will be implemented or scaled-up to improve teaching and learning in order to increase performance within the SES Band?

1. Facilitation of student tracking in all content areas and classroom.
2. Implementation of D.I.
3. Increasing the level of rigor as determined by the content standards
4. Increase student motivation and engagement.
5. Social Emotional Learning
6. Project-based Learning

Describe in detail how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaled-up.

1.  Facilitation of student tracking in all content areas and classroom

  • Professional Development based on learning goals and scales and student tracking will be provided
  • School-wide student progress monitoring will be developed and impemented
  • Students will use progress monitoring tools to track their individual progress
  • Administration will monitor progress throughout classroom observation
2.. Implementation of D.I.
  • Professional development utilizing varies elements of differentiated instruction will be provided
  • Administration will monitor progress through classroom walkthroughs and observations
3.  Increasing the level of rigor as determined by the content standards
  • Professional development on rigorous instruction will be provided
  • Teachers will provide a level of instruction that iwll enable students to engage in rigorous tasks
  • Administration will monitor progress through classroom walkthroughs and observations,
4.  Increase student motivation and engagement

How does the school ensure the fidelity of students not progressing towards school and district goals?

Parkway offers afterschool, Saturday enrichment and tutoring programs to ensure student progress towards academic profiency. Teachers conduct data chats and collaborative discussions during PLC to ensure the academic success of students not progressing towards academic goals.

How does the school ensure that all classroom instruction is accessible to the full range of learners using Universal Designs for Learning (UDL) for effective instructional design (planning) and delivery (teaching)?

Teachers discuss instruction practices in their PLCs and professional development. Teachers discuss various way to differentiate instuction to meet all students' needs.

Describe texts used for core, supplemental, and intervention programs at each grade level. How does the school ensure students have access to a balance of literary and informational text in a variety of mediums?

Students will have access to core content informational texts through a variety of resources including hard copies and online digital resources.  The school will implement an interdisciplinary school-wide literacy plan and provide content area teachers with professional development to ensure that students receive information through a variety of mediums.

How does your school implement the Broward County Public Schools Social and Emotional Learning Standards to ensure students are developing social and emotional skills?

Social Emotional Learning is implemented through the curriculum across core academic disciplines and further supported through the curriculum of after school programs. Teachers are provided with ongoing training and support through SEL professional learning communities and district workshops. In which ways are the five competencies of the Social Emotional Learning explicitly taught and/or integrated school-wide and in the classroom?
