Applied Linguistics

Language Skills: Listening and Speaking

We have spent the last four weeks examining the main components of linguistics (phonology, morphology, semantics, and syntax). We have, in essence, filled our linguistic toolboxes with useful information that will further empower us to meet the needs of our linguistically diverse students. For the next two weeks, we are going to discuss how this information applies to language development in our classrooms. We will share ideas and strategies that help us to effectively facilitate our students’ development of the four modalities of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We will begin the discussion with listening and speaking. This week we will consider the difference between hearing and active listening and consider the importance of listening and speaking activities in our classrooms. We will also share strategies that have worked in your own classes.

This week’s reading assignment will help you to complete the final project. There will be no upload due this week as you will use the time to work on your final project.
