Describe all intervention strategies employed by the school to improve the academic performance of students identified by the early warning system.

Wingate Oaks Center (WOC) is a specialized day school which provides unique and individual services for children experiencing intellectual challenges.  The early warning system for our students is in place at the school sites which refer our children.  WOC is where they are placed after early warning indicators, data collection, referrals and staffings occur.

BEST PRACTICE #4

Scaling Up BEST Practices

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

School improvement is based on a continuous improvement model, using research-based accepted best practices, which align with student achievement needs, insure student progress, and may be revised when appropriate.

Goals

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving student achievement and why was this area chosen?

The content area in which the focus will be for improving student achievement is lanugage arts/communication. This area was chosen because effective communication skills are the foundation for all learning.

What specific BEST Practice(s) will be implemented or scaled-up to improve teaching and learning in order to increase performance within the SES Band?

Instructional staff will focus on communication skills throughout the day, including during other content areas, as they occur naturally during social skills, and in all school environments.

Describe in detail how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaled-up.

For Pre-K, communication skills will be extended beyond the classroom environment, including on the playground and during assemblies and school events.
For K-12, communication skills will be extended beyond the school environment, including in the community on Community Based Instructional trips.

What specific school-level progress monitoring data is collected and how often?

For K-12 learners Pre and Post test are being completed using the Functional Communication checklist at the begin of the school year and at the end of the school year.

For preschool learners the Battelle Developmental Inventory 2 is completed when learners enter the program and when they exit the program.

How does the school ensure the fidelity of students not progressing towards school and district goals?

All learners' progress is tracked through IEP data and IEP annual meetings. In addition our K-12 population is administered the Florida Standards Alternate Assessment.

How does the school ensure that all classroom instruction is accessible to the full range of learners using Universal Designs for Learning (UDL) for effective instructional design (planning) and delivery (teaching)?

As an ESE center school, all of our instruction is done in a format which provides multiple modalities, appropriate wait time, and is sensitive to individual learning styles. In addition, individual students with specific learning needs on their IEPs have access to the curriculum using highly structured learning strategies.

How does the school ensure Tier 1 Standards-Based classroom instruction is being implemented properly and effectively?

K-12 teachers follow a curriculum map that links Access Points for ESE students to State Standards.

Describe texts used for core, supplemental, and intervention programs at each grade level. How does the school ensure students have access to a balance of literary and informational text in a variety of mediums?

The District's approved Pre-K curriculum links instruction to State Pre-K Standards.

How does your school implement the Broward County Public Schools Social and Emotional Learning Standards to ensure students are developing social and emotional skills?

Wingate Oaks School Improvement Goal is to increase communication skills for all learners. Effective communication is the foundation for all social and emotional learning.

In which ways are the five competencies of the Social Emotional Learning explicitly taught and/or integrated school-wide and in the classroom?

Positive behavior is reinforced whenever possible.  Wingate Oaks SIP goal is to increase communication skills, which is a key to effectively managing emotions.

How does your school-wide policy and practices support the social emotional learning for students?

Wingate Oaks utilizes "Kids of Character" and "Say Hello" initiatives  throughout the school to support positive behavior and communicating wants and needs.
