Domain 3: Organizational Leadership is comprised of four standards integral to successful school operation.
Standard 9: Communication. Effective school leaders practice two-way communications and use appropriate oral, written, and electronic communication and collaboration skills to accomplish school and system goals by building and maintaining relationships with students, faculty, parents, and community.

How do you practice two-way communications and use appropriate communication in all formats to accomplish school and District goals by building and sustaining relationships with students, faculty, parents and all other stakeholders?

Maintaining positive relationships serve as a means to attaining our goals as schools. A school leader will be most effective if s/he establishes strong relationships with all stakeholders. Remember, school leaders are building relationships all the time. It is a continual process that never ceases.

Berkowitz, et. al (2012) established some rules about why we need relationships, how to effectively build positive relationships, and how to sustain those relationships.

Here’s why you need to establish strong relationships:

  1. Community building occurs one-to-one. You need to build relationships with people one-to-one if you want them to become involved in your group or organization. Some people become involved in organizations because they believe in the cause. However, many people become involved in a community group or organization, just because they have a relationship with another person who is already involved.
  2. In order to get support from people outside of our organizations, we need to build relationships in which people know and trust us.
  3. We all need a community of people to share the joys and the struggles of organizing and making community change. A little bit of camaraderie goes a long way.
