Emergency Medical Technician

An EMT is trained to work as a member of an emergency medical team administering first-aid treatment and transporting sick or injured persons to a medical facility. The Emergency Medical Technician program offers students the opportunity to become a certified Emergency Medical Technician - Basic following successful completion of program competencies. This 300-hour program includes: theory, emergency room rotations, fire rescue ride time, handling of equipment, and performing designated tasks under hazardous and non-hazardous conditions. All applicants must meet with the program advisor to complete the required paper work prior to registering for the EMT program. Students must pass a Level II background check, drug screening, and medical examination.

Schedule

The EMT day class is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 10:00am-4:00pm. The EMT program takes approximately 3 months to complete. There are currently no night classes available.

Cost

The course registration fee is $1,323.00* for Florida residents. Course registration fees are higher for out- of-state students. In order to qualify for Florida resident tuition, legal residence must be dated, issued or filed 12 months before the first day of classes in the term. In addition to the registration fee, a student will be required to purchase books, uniforms and supplies.

All applicants applying for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • have earned a standard high school diploma from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalency) Please note: Students that have earned a high school diploma from outside the US must have their diploma evaluated--a list of the accepted foreign transcript evaluation agencies is available at the Broward Fire Academy front office.
  • take and pass the TABE
  • students who have a high school diploma from a Florida Public High School and who have a graduation date of 2007 and on, have a college degree or active mililtary are exempt from the TABE test
