BEST PRACTICE #4

Scaling Up BEST Practices

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

School improvement is based on a continuous improvement model, using research-based accepted best practices, which align with student achievement needs, insure student progress, and may be revised when appropriate.

Goals

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving student achievement and why was this area chosen?

As evidenced by our 2018 FSA data, North Andrews Gardens achieved 55% proficient in ELA, 63% proficient in mathematics and 53% proficient in Science.  Our lowest 25% in ELA had  56% learning gains and our lowest 25% in math had 54%.   Since reading is the critical element to success on ELA, Mathematics and Science, North Andrews Gardens has chosen ELA as our focus for improvement.

What specific BEST Practice(s) will be implemented or scaled-up to improve teaching and learning in order to increase performance within the SES Band?

Progress monitoring of all students scoring below a level 3 as well as monitoring students for learning gains will be scaled up using Benchmark Assessment System (BAS), iReady, and district created CARE packages.  Literacy and ELA standards will be the focus of our Professional Learning Communities.

Describe in detail how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaled-up.

Benchmark Assessment System data will be collected, analyzed and used to differentiate instructional reading groups 3x per year.  Data chats will occur monthly with administration and teachers to discuss student progress, standards mastery and analyze data.  iReady will be used with fidelity for remediation and acceleration and CARE packages will be used for progress monitoring.  Small group instruction will be fluid and used for specific standard remediation and reinforcement.  Professional Learning Communities will meet monthly to analyze standards, student progress and share best practices.

What specific school-level progress monitoring data is collected and how often?

iReady progress monitoring data is collected at the end of each Care Cycle.

How does the school ensure the fidelity of students not progressing towards school and district goals?

The school ensurse the fidelity of students not progressing towards school and district goals through the use of the Response to Intervention (RTI).  It creates a plan for each individual student based on their needs using the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

How does the school ensure that all classroom instruction is accessible to the full range of learners using Universal Designs for Learning (UDL) for effective instructional design (planning) and delivery (teaching)?

North Andrews Gardens ensures that classroom instruction is accessible to the full range of learners using Universal Designs for Learning (UDL) by using a variety of technology and hands on learning opportunities in grades K-5.  This includes one to one laptop computers for our  Digital 4 and Digital 5 Classrooms.  All grades K-5 have exposure to internet, software programs, and project based learning.  The Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) and the use of the Fountas and Pinnell Literacy Continnuum allow teachers access to information that assists them in selecting books based on individual student needs for planning and teaching.  Teachers provide students with a variety of learning opportunities;fieldtrips, distance learning opportunites, hands on learning, science lab, computer lab, and small group differentiated learning to meet the individual student needs.

How does the school ensure Tier 1 Standards-Based classroom instruction is being implemented properly and effectively?

Administration conducts observations throughout the year to observe that Tier 1 standards-Based instruction is being implemented properly and effectively.  The coaches provide support to individual teachers and teams as needed and provide professional learning opportunites to educate the teachers on new initiatives and best practices.  The teachers, coaches and administration work collaboratively with each other during data chats to discuss best practices and insure that the students' individual needs are met based on data and identify those students who may need additonal support beyond tier 1 strategies.

Describe texts used for core, supplemental, and intervention programs at each grade level. How does the school ensure students have access to a balance of literary and informational text in a variety of mediums?

Grades K-5 Core Texts are the Journeys Series for English Language Arts, Go Math for Mathematics , Stem Scopes and Scholastic A to Z for Science, and Guided Reading Literacy Library for Social Studies.
Grades K-5 Supplemental Texts are the Title 1 Scholastic Leveled Readers for Balanced Literacy, Iready Toolbox for Reading and Math, Fountas and Pinnell Literacy Continuumm, Benchmark Assessment System (BAS), i-Ready Language Arts Florida Standards Book, I-Ready Math Florida Standards Book, I-Ready Toolbox resources.
Grades K-5 Intervention programs are Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), Fundations, i-Ready, Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) with the Literacy Continuum by Fountas and Pinnell

We are currently using Reflex Math, i-Ready software for Reading and Math, Delta Science Kits along with Stem Scopes provide a balance of literary and informational text in a variety of mediums.
