Circulation Policies

 

All materials MUST be checked out of the media center.  This practice makes it easier to locate materials when they are needed by teachers and students. All materials may be searched using SAVVYCat, Broward School's online card catalog.

Grade 6:  Five books at a time
Grade 7:  Five books at  a time
Grade 8:  Five books at a time
When more resources are need for projects or reports, materials will be checked out to the teacher.
Faculty:  Unlimited materials except for reserved materials. Faculty circulation period is for 30 days and may be renewed if materials are not reserved.
Staff:  Ten books at a time.  One audiovisual material at a time.  Staff circulation period is for 30 days and may be renewed if materials are not reserved.
Parent/Community:  Two books at a time. One audiovisual material at a time. Circulation period is for 1 week


Students:  Students may borrow all Fiction and Non-Fiction books except for Teacher Resources.  Student circulation period is one week with renewals possible if materials are not reserved.  Reference collections are limited to in-school use only.
Reserving materials:  To reserve materials for student use, please contact your media specialist. The reserved materials will be placed on a reserve shelf for use.
Requesting materials:  For teachers who wish to request materials for their classroom, please contact your media specialist. The materials will be checked out to the teacher.

SAVVYCat

 

What is SAVVYCat?

 SAVVYCat is the online card catalog for all materials circulating through the media centers in Broward County Public Schools.  Included in the union database are approximately 2,880,000 items located in Broward's 231 elementary, middle, high, center and technical schools.  SAVVYCat may be accessed from school or home at: http://sbbc.library.net.   The system is operated utilizing the Library.Solution software from TLC/CARL.

 

SAVVYCat may be searched from school and home making resources more readily accessible.

SAVVYCat may be searched by individual school or by performing an all school search.

 

A SavvySearcher is one who accesses information efficiently and effectively by:

  • Understanding organization of resources in media center;

  • Following a search plan using key words and related terms;

  • Determining the type of material most appropriate for the topic;

  • Using reference materials to locate information;

  • Using simple and combined terms to search the PAC (public access catalog);

  • Choosing broader or narrower terms to refine search results;

  • Recognizing when currency of information is needed;

  • Recognizing when a variety of resources are needed on a subject to represent a range of views.

How can you search for a book using SAVVYCat?

Select your school from the list.
To perform an easy search for a book: type a word in the search query box on the home page and select either Title, Author or Subject.

  • The Browse button allows you to move forward or backward through a word or number search list, or search additional fields.

  • The Combination Search allows you to search author, titles, subject AND/OR notes simultaneously.

  • The Help button opens the help screen that will explain all the features of the program.

How do you search for more materials in SAVVYCat using the Advanced Search Method?

  • Boolean Searching - allows you to search for words and phrases in certain combinations:

  • AND or  & are Boolean Operators that search for more than one word or phrase;

  • OR or |  are Boolean Operators that search for either of two or more words or phrases;

  • NOT or ~ are Boolean Operators that search for one word or phrase and not the other.

Wildcard Searching - allows you to search for partial words in the search query box by using the wildcard symbol *  (asterisk) to the right of a word stem.

You may also use the * character in a search as a substitute for any individual character.

Exact Phrase Searches - you can search exact phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks ("  ").
 

What do the buttons on the SAVVYCat Search Screen do?

  • Home button - returns you to the home page;

  • Help button - Opens the PAC help screen;

  • New Search - Clears any search terms entered and limits set;

  • Browse - Opens the Browse search query box;

  • Combination Search - Opens the Combination Search page;

  • Find - Let's you select Titles, Authors, Subjects, and/or Notes;

  • Return pull down menu - let's you select the number of results that will be displayed per page;

  • Begin with/contain pull down menu - lets you search for items in the catalog that begin with or contain the search query;

  • The word(s) query box - the place where you enter your search terms;

  • The Search button - launches a search.
