Millions of farm workers and their families travel across the United States each year to cultivate and harvest the fruits and vegetables that feed our nation. It is not unusual for farm worker families to move several times a year following the crops. Although the majority of farm workers are U.S. citizens or legal residents, they come from varied ethnic backgrounds, and may have special language needs. Migrant farm workers are hard working people who constitute one of the most extreme examples of the working poor in America. Their labor is essential to the United States fruit, vegetable, and horticultural industries; however, farm workers on the average earn annual incomes below the federal poverty level.
