As an employee of The School Board of Broward County, Florida,
you are eligible to receive, in addition to your basic salary,
certain benefits that have considerable monetary value and in
most cases are tax-free to you as an individual. Instructional
employees who have outside comparable health insurance will receive

The School Board pays the premium for the employee's health
coverage to Vista Health Plan.
The School Board pays the premium for the employee's dental
coverage. New employees may choose from a variety of dental
plans.
The School Board provides each employee with a Vision Care Program
that offers an annual vision examination and corrective lenses
and frames.
Employees may elect to cover their dependents for health,
dental and/or vision coverage through pre taxed payroll deductions.
The School Board pays the premium for Group Term Life
Insurance equal to one and one-quarter (1 1/4) times your annual
salary, up to a maximum of $50,000. The School Board fully pays the premium for disability
coverage. This insurance provides you up to twenty-four (24) months
of guaranteed income at the rate of sixty (60) percent of your
regular salary when you meet the requirements. The maximum amount
you may receive each month is $1,500. At no expense to you, the School Board provides comprehensive
liability coverage for all employees. This coverage provides for
legal counsel to defend those covered in any suit brought against
them even if any of the allegations of the suit are groundless,
false, or fraudulent provided the employee was acting within the
scope of his/her duties.
403(b) Retirement savings programs are available through a variety
of investment options.
Contributions are made to the Florida Retirement System
at no cost to the employee. This program exists to help employees that have personal
problems that affect their work, health, family relationships
and emotional life.
As a full-time teacher, you are entitled to earn 10 paid sick
leave days per year. Sick leave is cumulative from year to year
with no maximum on the number of sick days that may be accrued.
Sick leave from a Florida district may be transferred.
The employment contract for teachers provides for 6 paid holidays
annually.
A new hire may be advanced a $1,000 loan. The loan must be requested
within 60 days of the hire date.
Paychecks may automatically be deposited into any banking institution.
A teacher may apply for reimbursement up to a specified amount
for attendance at a center for creative learning (conferences),
research projects to strengthen curriculum (course work at a
university), career ladder stipends, etc. A 3rd year teacher
is eligible for $500. A teacher who has their Professional Services
Contract (PSC) is eligible for $1,000. Interested teachers must
complete and submit an application. Applications are available
mid May.
Teachers beginning in their 2nd year of employment may apply
for tuition reimbursement to become certified in an approved
critical shortage area. Interested teachers must complete and
submit an application. Applications are sent to the schools
in March.
If you have a loan from the Federal Perkins Loan Program,
you may be eligible for a loan cancellation for full-time teaching
at a low-income school or in certain subject areas. For questions
about Perkins Federal Loan cancellation, contact the office that
administers the program at your college or university. The Florida Department of Education created The Critical
Teacher Shortage Student Loan Forgiveness Program to provide financial
assistance to eligible Florida teachers for the repayment of undergraduate
and graduate educational loans which led to certification in a

The Florida Department of Education created the Critical
Teacher Shortage Tuition Reimbursement Program for the purpose
of improving skills and knowledge of certified full-time publicly
funded school employees currently teaching or preparing to teach
in a Pre K-12 critical teacher shortage area as approved by the

BEEPis an electronic, single-access portal for teachers that includes
a resource bank of unit plans, lesson plans, activities and resources.
The components are aligned to the Sunshine State Standards, the
National Educational Technology Standards, Information Literacy
Standards, and Career and Technical Education Standards. BEEP
assures quality and consistency of curriculum and guarantees that
teachers instruct on grade level or above. BEEP also includes
networking and professional development for teachers.
BECON provides online courses for both students and teachers,
as well as, distance learning courses and electronic fieldtrips.
Broward’s Virtual University for educators provides
just in time professional development opportunities around the
clock. Access to training is via a computer . An annual Summer Institute offers training in SpringBoard,
AP and Pre-AP courses. The institute has served approximately
800 to 900 teachers a year and has provided notable keynote speakers
who address the issue of challenging underrepresented populations. APIP, a federal grant, provides targeted staff development
to pre-Advanced Placement (pre-AP) and AP instructors in six low-income
middle to high school feeder patterns. Included in this grant
is an experimental condition that provides an on-line support
course for low-income students enrolled in advanced courses. Results
from the experiment will be used to plan appropriate academic
support systems for low-income students. All new teachers receive support through NESS, a site-based
induction program. It is designed to provide assistance and coaching/mentoring
to all educators new to Broward County to promote a successful
initial classroom experience. The NESS Support Team includes school-based
Administrators, School NESS Liaison, Instructional Coach, Teacher
Coach and NESS ProgramAlternative Certification can be achieved
in conjunction with the Teaching and Leadership Center (TLC) at
FAU as well as other local colleges and universities. The NTO is a one-day orientation for teachers new to the
district. NTO provides information on Certification, Benefits,
Payroll, Employee Relations, Instructional Staffing, Human Resource
Development, and the Broward Teachers Union. NTA is a week-long intensive professional development
event designed to provide new teachers with instructional strategies,
classroom management techniques, integration of technology, curriculum
and content area information and practices and the importance
of professionalism to make their initial classroom experience
successful. Review sessions and/or support for the General Knowledge
Test (GKT) are available for teachers holding a temporary certificate.
Content includes practice in Mathematics, Reading, English Language
Skills and Reading.
ESOL Workshops are available to teachers through in-service
training activities at no cost to the employee.
Teachers can earn supplemental pay ranging from $326-$3,800
for holding an additional position, such as department chairperson,
coaching, team leader, textbook coordinator, and/or club sponsor.
