BRACE NEWSLETTER

grad pic

Seniors and Juniors! My name is Ms. Charlotte Kaplan, the BRACE Advisor at JPT. BRACE stands for Broward Advisor for Continuing Education. I’m here to help you with some of the important decisions that need to be made over the next 2 years. The BRACE office has information on 4 year colleges (in or out of state), 2 year colleges (in or out of state), vocational-technical schools, military programs and apprenticeship opportunities. If continuing your education beyond graduation is in your plans, then you need to make an appointment with me. The BRACE office is located in the Guidance Office.

There will be many events and lots of information pertaining to both seniors and juniors. You will need to pay particular attention to JPTV live for college/vocational school visits, college fairs, college tours and other important happenings this year. Also, please watch for the same listings on the BRACE Bulletin Board in the BRACE office. Go onto your emails and watch for Scholarship Bulletins which are emailed directly to you, JPT Website, and all the teachers have a copy; Open Houses, College Fairs, Senior Night, and lists of colleges/universities coming to JPT.

Make this the best year yet. Both Junior and Senior years are critical years. Best of luck to all of you this year. Keep those grades up. Please feel free to come and see me.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

If you are applying to any of the State universities, pick up a transcript request form in the Registrar’s Office in Guidance. Interested in an in state school, all applications are online on the school’s website, navigate to apply now, and complete your application. If applying to an out of state school, most applications are available online via the Common Application. If you are doing an individual school’s application, go onto the specific school website and navigate to the apply now link. Remember an application has four components, 1) the application, 2) the application fee, 3) high school transcript, 4) test scores sent directly from collegeboard.org and act.org.

CSS/FINANCIAL AID PROFILE FORM

If you are applying to certain select schools and are applying for financial aid, you will be required to fill out a PROFILE form. This is a separate form in addition to a Federal Financial Aid Form. The PROFILE is to be filled out in the fall and will be available in the BRACE office. Most of the schools prefer you fill out this form on-line.

COMPUTER PROGRAMS

There are several computer programs available for those students who need assistance in finding a college/university, vocation or technical school, career or scholarship. Some websites to review are Facts.org and Schoolsoup.com. Please see me for assistance.

SCHOLARSHIP BULLETINS

Scholarship Bulletins will be sent to you via your email address, and also on the JPT website.  Every teacher and every guidance counselor has a Scholarship Bulletin.  These bulletins list all the recent scholarships that have come in, qualifications of applicants, how much the scholarship is for and the application deadline. Remember – IT IS UP TO YOU TO SEEK THESE OUT.  Many scholarships went unapplied for last year.  You may be the only interested applicant and consequently, the scholarship winner.  APPLY!!

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS

When University deadlines are approaching, it is important that students check the status of their documents early by accessing University websites , checking their personal emails, or calling Admission Departments. Be sure your High School transcript, application, test scores and other pertinent information are received by the school’s deadlines. SAT scores or ACT scores need to be sent directly from www.collegeboard.org or www.act.org, to the universities you are applying to as they are not included on your transcript. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Leon, Registrar, before school, during your lunch or after the last bell until 3:00. Transcript forms can be picked up in Guidance outside of the Registrar’s office.
