BROWARD CHILDREN OF INMATES INITIATIVE

The School Social Work and Attendance is a partner with the Broward Children of Inmate Initiative (BCII) in its work with the school age children of inmates who reside in Broward County and attend public schools. We consider these children as being considerably at risk for mental health and behavioral concerns. Accordingly, our staff is committed to the following:

1. Receive referrals from your organization with parental consent
2. Identify BCII students at the school site once caregivers or when school personnel identify them as eligible for BCII interventions
3. Provide comprehensive assessment, short-term interventions including family support services
4. Participate in comprehensive problem solving team meetings to insure appropriate social, educational, emotional program planning for individual students as indicated
5. Make referral to appropriate community resources for additionally indicated services to these affected students and their families.
6. Plan and conduct staff development activities through our department to sensitize school personnel to the importance of special support for these students
7. Plan and conduct parent education group activities through our Graduate Internship Program

We look forward to continued collaboration with the community based partners and faith-based organizations that will provide family support and mentoring as well as the inmate visitation portion of the program.
