Introduction
The purpose of this course is to give you the knowledge and skills necessary
to be able to safely assist students with medication administration while in
school. Participants will become familiar with proper procedure in the
administration of medication in the school setting. Prior to beginning this
course you should have a copy of the manual titled Medication Administration
in a School Setting. It is included in your school’s Health Services Manual
and can also be obtained on the Health Education Service’s web page. You
should read the sections of the Medication Administration in a School
Setting manual for each module of this course prior to completing the module
and answering the questions at the end of each module.
You must complete each module and correctly answer the question at the end
of each module before going on to the next one. You must receive a passing
score of 80% or higher on the posttest to receive your certificate which
allows you to administer medications to students.
A maximum of three (3) attempts is
permitted for this test.

Highlights:
Each school
district needs to develop a procedure for providing training to school staff
in medication administration for students.
Each school
district needs to develop policies and procedures for administering
medications to students in school and on field trips
The parent
needs to provide written permission for the school to administer the
medication at school
Each medication
shall be received in original container, counted when received and stored in
its original container in a secure fashion under lock and key.
There shall be
no liability for civil damages as a result of the administration of
medication when the person administering the medication as ordinarily
reasonably prudent person would have acted under the same or similar
circumstances.

Authorization form is required for all medications, including over the
counter, that are to be administered at school. Both the healthcare
provider and the parent must sign the form.

Please Note
Insulin injections, rectal diastat and epi-pen
administration will not be taught in this course. Those medications require
a separate child specific training.
