FIELD TRIP PROCEDURES FOR

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

The goal of the district is to facilitate students with special medical needs to be allowed to participate in all school activities. The following criteria must be met:

If a student requires medication to be administered during a field trip the following procedure must be implemented:

  • The student must have a completed Authorization for Medication/Treatment Form on file with the healthcare provider and parent signature. A copy of the form should accompany the student on the field trip.

  • The principal’s designee (trained in medication administration) must accompany the student on the field trip.

  • The medication must be kept safely with the principal’s designee in the original container with the student’s name on it.

  • Medication that needs to be refrigerated must be kept in a small cooler with ice packs.

  • Prior to administering medication the principal’s designee will use the universal medication safety precaution known as “The Five Rights of Medication Administration”.

  • Always cleanse hands before administering medications.

  • Document administration of medication on Student Medication Log.

Supplies Needed:

Upon returning to school return the medication to the locked cabinet where medications are stored.

Place the Student Medication Log and the copy of the Authorization for Medication/Treatment Form back in the medication binder.
