RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES AND PROFESSIONALS
Post-secondary opportunities, training, and financial
assistance are available to families from three excellent sources listed
below. The federal government financial aid website, the Florida
financial aid website, and the District’s BRACE website provide parents
and students with the processes for applying for financial aid and for
exploring scholarship opportunities.
These different websites can help you and your
student navigate the waters of the college process. Federal
applications for financial aid are filed after January 1st of
the student’s senior year while scholarships have varying deadlines.
The Florida Student Financial Aid website also provides this information
on applying for financial aid and scholarships; however, this site is
limited to the state of Florida. Applications for Florida financial aid
may be filed any time after December 1st. Finally, the BRACE
website also lists many, many scholarship opportunities, local,
regional, and national, as well as a guide on how to choose a
post-secondary path (technical, college, private, public, etc.) and
other related information.
As you and your student consider choices for college,
university, or technical school, these websites can be extremely
helpful. For additional websites, do a GOOGLE search for financial aid,

When there are times that you may need physical and
emotional help – parents and/or students – there are community resources
available that can provide immediate assistance, as well as those that
can provide long term assistance. The school counselor as an advocate
is your first stop but when that resource is not available, here are two
(2) telephone numbers that will come in handy. The first – FIRST CALL
FOR HELP – can provide immediate assistance for almost any physical or
emotional emergency or even non-emergency. The second – Broward County
Family Counseling Program – can provide therapeutic assistance for your
family or a short or long term basis, whichever is necessary to resolve
your mental health issues.

Professional Organization Resources for School CounselorsBoth the Florida School Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association provide a wealth of resources and networking opportunities for school counselors. Another helpful resource for school counselors is the National Association of School Psychologists’ site. There you may view and print many, many resources related to trauma and mental health. If you are interested in membership to any of these valuable and useful organizations, membership information as well as professional development opportunities and resources are available at each of these respective websites.
Student Records Access for Parents and StudentsParents and students may access records of attendance, grades (middle and high school only), test scores, graduation requirements status (high school only), and much more on the District’s VIRTUAL COUNSELOR using their virtual counselor secure login. Parents can view their child's FCAT reading, mathematics and science scores on the Internet by logging on to the FCAT Parent using the log-in and password provided by their child’s school. This secure site features detailed information on the meaning of the scores and provides resources to improve student performance in the future.
There are many more resources on the web that can help you assist your student. Search for parenting resources or FCAT prep or any number of terms to help YOU get the assistance YOU need to get involved in your student’s education and contribute to their success in school and across the lifespan.
ActivitiesTeaching Tolerance is a program that is FREE and available to the public and to elementary school counselors. Provided by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance provides a magazine of helpful and insightful information about being tolerant, as well as a wealth of activities that can be found on their website. The Department of Labor has developed a website JUST FOR KIDS to assist even the youngest school child with career exploration. Filled with video and pictorial career descriptions, games, and activities, this site will keep you and your child occupied for hours with the wealth of information it provides.
K-13+ activities are available from Family TLC: The Nation's Network of Child Care Resource and Referral. Family TLC provides tools to enhance the parent/child relationship.
