My child is being bullied in school, whom can I speak to
about this situation?
In any situation you may wish to make an appointment to speak
to the school counselor. Bullying is not tolerated in Broward schools; but
someone at your child’s school needs to be made aware of the problem. The
consequences of bullying can leave impressionable scars on children. The
district has in place a program for K-adult with nine character traits that
are taught throughout the year.

Do school counselors provide mental health counseling?
The school counselor conducts small groups that may include
topics such as, building life skills, making friends, conflict management,
different families, social skills, career decision making, anger management
that can assist with helping students remove barriers for academic
achievement. School counselors do not provide mental health therapy.
Contact the school social worker or the District’s Family Counseling Program
at 754-321-3153 for short term assistance.
I suspect that my neighbor’s child may be a victim of
abuse, what should I do?
This is a legal matter and should be reported to the
authorities immediately. Call the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE.
It is not necessary to contact the school. If school personnel believe a
student may be a victim, they are under the same obligation to notify law
enforcement.
My child is going to be retained but he is older than his
classmates. What can I do?
Florida has made it very clear that schools must be committed
to ensuring that students read, write and able to perform math problems at
grade level. There are NO social promotions. That is, students will not be
promoted to the next level because of they are older than their peer
My child has already been retained once, can she be
retained again?
At the elementary level your child may be retained once in
K-2nd grade and once in 3rd-5th grade (or twice in 3rd-5th if not previously
retained in K-2). Since Florida has made a commitment to academic
achievement for all students there are some exceptions to this procedure.
ALL children MUST pass the 3rd grade reading level either by FCAT
scores/NRT or some designated alternative assessment. This information can
be found on Broward Schools web site, click on school board and then school
board policies.
Is the same true of middle school students?
A middle school student may be retained once in grades 6-8.
Intensive reading and math is provided by the school to ensure that the
student makes progress throughout the year they are repeating.

The district does not maintain a tutor list for safety
reasons. There are many qualified teachers and community agencies that
provide tutoring. The responsibility for hiring a tutor rests with the
parent.
My child has special needs, whom do I speak to concerning
this matter?
You are encouraged to visit with the school counselor, the
social worker, the teacher and/or the administrator when you need assistance
with your child who may be struggling academically or socially. Every
school staff member is concerned about the success of your child and there
are many strategies they can assist your child to succeed. If you are
concerned about your student’s progress, share your concerns with the
teacher and/or the school counselor .
How can I arrange to speak with my child’s teacher?
You can request a meeting with your child’s teacher through
the daily agenda, a note, a phone call to the school or teacher, or speaking
to the school guidance counselor. The school counselor could arrange to be
present with you and the teacher at that meeting.
Most of the schools have web sites available on
www.browardschools.com where you can access them under school locator,
choose a level, (schools are listed alphabetically), then click on name of
your child’s school. There is a separate link to their website. Many of the
schools list the counselors/teachers name and a contact number.

What is the difference between an 18-credit option diploma and a
24-credit option diploma?
The 18-credit option is an accelerated graduation program that allows a
student who meets the criteria to complete his/her high school
graduation requirements in 3 years. Per Florida statute, a student and
his/her parent must select the option during the 9th grade year. The
requirements do differ from the 24-credit option which is the
traditional 4-year program. To consider the differences and to make good
choices, review the requirements for these 2 options at http://www.browardschools.com/info/newcomers.htm
Talk with your school counselor who is familiar with these diploma
options to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each.
