Differentiated Accountability
The U.S. Department of Education selected Florida to participate in the "Differentiated Accountability Pilot" initiative in 2008. Through Differentiated Accountability, or DA, the state is allowed greater flexibility in providing the needed technical assistance and interventions to the schools with greatest need. Florida's DA plan streamlines the federal and state accountability systems and directs increasing school-wide interventions and school and district. This program allows FDOE to operate a new, tiered approach to working directly with schools to increase student achievement. The support and assistance provided to each school is individualized depending on the needs of that school. Through DA, schools fall into a matrix of categories based on the level of the school's achievement. The lowest performing schools receive the most support, and under DA, these schools are required to implement the most robust interventions that will help lead to successful school improvement. In order to provide direct support to schools, Florida has created a regional system of support.
School Improvement
School Improvement encompasses a system of accountability for districts and schools. Student performance is assessed as a measure to determine whether state educational standards are being achieved. In the event that a district or school performance does not meet state standards, measures are developed and used to promote improvement. Additionally, within the tenets of school improvement, the State Board of Education has authority to impose sanctions and rewards as related to school performance.
Update For A+ Recognition Funds
Our office has learned that the state has released the A+ funds to the District. A packet of information has been sent to school principals to assist in the facilitation of payments to eligible employees.
