Abstract

This qualitative study investigated perceptions of instructors using the post-graduate
alternatives for secondary students (PASS) instructional model to learn about quality of life
(QoL) for students with intellectual disability (ID). A framework of QoL developed by Schalock
(2000) was used to analyze responses from three instructors. Six out of the eight indicators for
QoL from Schalock’s hierarchy were being addressed by the PASS instructors. The two
indicators that were not discussed included material and physical well-being. However, these can
be viewed as the responsibilities of the students’ families, and not necessarily a school district
responsibility. Implications of this study point to the need for an increased level of family
involvement in the PASS instructional model to maintain student gains.
