Grade Level News
Pre-Kindergarten
May is an exciting month! We are almost finished with our Letter People Curriculum. The next letters are Z, I, Q, and L. Often, I am asked, “What do you do in Pre-K ESE?” We do many of the same skills as non-ESE classrooms such as learning Math, Science, and Social Studies. We also learn the beginnings of Writing and how to read. If you would like to find out more about our class, just “drop me a line” here at Plantation Elementary School. My name is Mr. Kurz.
Kindergarten
We are approaching the end of the school year, which means that the students need to keep working hard to get ready for first grade. In Reading, we will review everything that they have learned. Adding and subtracting numbers up to five and reviewing numbers 1 to 30 will be the Math goal. In Science, students will continue to learn about plants. Please keep reading to your child every day and check their backpacks for important information.
First Grade
We are working on Cause and Effect in Reading, patterns in Math, plants in Science, and a review of skills in Writing. Please continue to work with your child on comprehension skills and using their strategies to answer questions.
Second Grade
In Reading, we are developing the skills of character. In addition to these skills, we are focusing on setting, comparing fantasy and reality, and compare and contrast through the use of biographies, fiction, and realistic fiction. In Writing, we will be working on expository and persuasive writing skills. In Science, we will be learning about different habitats and the variety of animals that live there. In Math, we will continue the chapter for time to the hour and half hour and identifying and comparing amounts of money. Please ensure that your child reads for at least 20 minutes each day and extend their comprehension by asking questions about what they have read.
Third Grade
Our students are working on a review of skills and preparing for fourth grade in Reading, Math, Writing, and Science. Areas of review include multiplication and division in Math, text features and story development in Reading, Expository, Narrative, and Persuasive responses in Writing, and the Development of Living Things in Science. Please remind your child to bring their homework and supplies to their classes daily as well as speaking to your child about making the correct behavioral choices at school.
Fourth Grade
In Math, we are preparing students for 5th grade by practicing multiplication and division as well as reinforcing skills taught during this school year. In Science, students are being introduced to and instructed on how to create a Science Fair project. We are also working on Chronological Order in Reading, Florida history and geography in Social Studies, and Literary Elements in Writing. Please remind your child to come prepared to school daily with their supplies.
Fifth Grade
There is excitement in the air! We are done with FCAT. Now that we are moving on with much enthusiasm, we are reviewing as well as exploring new things as we anticipate the big transition to MIDDLE SCHOOL. We are encouraging all parents to speak to their child about the remaining focus in class and displaying positive behavior. Please mark your calendars for our upcoming G.R.A.D.E. ceremony for May 15 at 8:30 am and our Moving on Ceremony on June 5 at 8:45 am. More information will be forthcoming.
All grades
There will be an in-house, school-wide Science Fair on June 6th that will help students understand and apply the Scientific Method.
