Season Greetings and Happy New Year! The year 2011 was a remarkable year and the holiday season always seems to usher in feelings of gratitude, appreciation, and good will for all mankind. These feelings are often reflected in colorful festivities, musical concerts, and heartfelt gifts of love and appreciation.

As we celebrate the holiday season and welcome in the New Year of 2012, let us continue to be thankful for the simple blessings that surround us daily.

Guidance Update: - Promotion & Policies

Important State Statute 1003.4156 affecting your middle school child - ALL core courses language arts, math, science and social studies must be passed in order to be promoted to 9th grade. Any course failed must be retake

All of these must be satisfactorily completed in order to go to 9th grade.

High School Courses in Middle School -In a high school level course, credit is granted on the semester basis. The semester grade is determined by totaling the two marking periods and midterm or final exam. Each quarter grade is worth 37.5% and the midterm or final is worth 25% of the semester grade. One half -credit is given for passing a semester's work in a course. Letter grades (A-F) will be given for any high school course taken by a middle school student and will count towards the student's high school grade point average (GPA) for graduation. Grades received for high school courses taken in middle school will not be calculated into the student's district grade point average for class rank determination.

Forgiveness policy for grades earned of "C", "D", or "F" as outlined by State Statue, allows students to retake the same or comparable course in high school. If the student earns a grade of "C" or higher in the retaken course, then the original grade will be removed from the student's GPA for both graduation and class ranking purposes. The original grade will always remain on the permanent transcript, but will not be calculated into these two GPA's. Please note that the Forgiveness Rule can only be applied one time per course and may not be recognized by many colleges, universities and scholarships. Middle School students earning B or B+ will be able to repeat those classes in high school to develop a stronger foundation of skills and knowledge, but they may not receive credit or grades for these repeated courses because they can only earn credit and grades once for each course.

Bring in your Campbell's Soup Labels and helpPines Middle School stock the school store with some great items! Pines is collecting Campbell's labels at the school store. Students can drop off labels to Mrs. Marshall anytime during store hours. Labels for Education link.

Cell Phones

Parents please be aware of District and School policy regarding student possession and use cell phones.

Your child may bring a cell phone to school.
For safety end security, students are strongly encouraged to secure phones in purse, book bag, etc. upon arrival on campus.
It must be turned off and not used at all during the school day.
The phone must be kept completely out of sight.
It must not be allowed ring or make any sound on school grounds.
A student may only use a cell phone on a school bus during a life-threatening emergency.
If cell phone is seen or heard on campus during the school day, it will be confiscated.
Consequences will be issued for cell phone violations, including text messaging.
Parents who need reach their child (or visa versa) should communicate via the appropriate Grade Level Center.
Even if it falls out of a pocket accidentally, it will be confiscated.
The phone will be held in the grade level center until a parent / guardian picks it up or makes arrangements.
Pick-up hours are from 8:15 a.m. 4:00 p.m.

Parents, please remind your child of the cell phone policy.

School Information

All current information regarding Pines Middle School, sports, clubs, academic competitions and fairs, PTSA, volunteer information, etc. will be posted on the web site. Please bookmark this site and visit it regularly. If you do not have internet service at home, you may access through the local library or a work location. This is the best way to keep up with current "happenings" at school. We are encouraging our Pines families to utilize this technology to keep abreast of all our activities.

ID badges must be worn, not hidden, at all times while students are on campus.

Foundations: Take Pride

From Foundations:

Students, remember our school expectations: Walk to the right, don't stand in no standing zones, pick it up - don't pass it up, dress for success, walk and talk, and respect others.

Also ...Pines Middle is happy to announce that our new Panther Bucks Store is now open for business! Students have the opportunity to receive a Panther Buck from any school staff member for "being caught" demonstrating positive character traits including all of the above mentioned expectations. These Panther Bucks can be used to purchase items in our store. So far, many of our students are choosing to "bank" their bucks for later purchases of larger items. Our store has many wonderful items including all kinds of school supplies, basketballs, stereos and more! Our students are developing their math skills as well as they develop their planning and saving skills.

Our Panther Bucks store is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school in the cafeteria. For more information or to donate items to our store, contact Mrs. Marshall, Mr. Shionis or Mrs. Skurnick.

Foundations: Establishing Positive Discipline Policies

FOUNDATIONS is a multimedia program designed to help schools (grades K-12) develop and implement their own individualized "proactive and positive school-wide behavior management and motivation practices."

FOUNDATIONS is divided into three modules.

Module 1 describes the overall vision for a "SAFE AND CIVIL SCHOOL" and the process for implementing the Foundations program in a school. This includes an introduction to the Foundations program and processes for guiding staff toward implementation of the program, establishing a program team, making data-based decisions, following guidelines for success and defining staff beliefs.Module 2 explores the reasons for misbehavior in common areas of the school and the processes for addressing that misbehavior. This includes an introduction to improving common areas, guidelines for structuring common areas effectively, teaching responsible behavior in the common areas, and effectively supervising these areas. Module 3 provides guidelines for addressing safety, discipline and behavior support in the school. This includes an introduction to improving safety, and strategies for increasing discipline and behavior support, addressing safety issues, dealing with discipline problems and enhancing student support.

Pines Middle has been actively involved with the FOUNDATIONS training to promote a "SAFE AND CIVIL SCHOOL" for all our students and staff members. Pines would like to encourage our parents and community members to support us in this endeavor by reinforcing traditional character traits, observing school and County policies and procedures, and encouraging positive social interactions.

Guidance counselors provide valuable information for students who might be struggling with life choices, family issues and academic success. PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Parents and Guardians:

Please be advised that you should NOT drop off your child on any of the roads around Pines Middle at any time; whether it is in the scope of a school crossing guard or not. You should always use the parent drop-off and pick-up loop in the front of the school. The City of Pembroke Pines Police Department has been alerted and will start enforcing this type of activity. We want every student and adult to be safe at Pines!

Please enter and exit from DOUGLAS RD and follow the loop around for student Drop-off and Pick-up. Follow the directional and stop signs. Keep traffic in a single lane. Pull to the most forward position when droppng your child off so that we can quickly accommodate as many vehicles as possible. Do not park your vehicle in the loop. Be courteous to your fellow loop users. They are trying to accomplish the same thing you are. Parents: WALGREEN'S is not a student pick-up or drop off place! Please use the parent loop in front of the school!

COURSE RECOVERY - FLORIDA VIRTUAL

All middle school students must pass 3 years of Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies in addition to one course in Career Planning, plus complete an Electronic Personal Education Plan (e-Pep) in order to meet the promotion requirements for high school. If your child needs to recover/pass a failed core course, the following options are available as a means of recovery for promotion but MUST be faciliated by the parent/guardian:

We encourage all parents/guardians to check your child's planner/agenda book on a daily basis. Not only can you stay current on assignments, projects, tests & quizzes that are upcoming and due, but you can use it to communicate with your child's teacher(s) as well.

Of course, PINNACLE is available 24/7 with any Internet connection. PINNACLE, which gives you access to grades, teachers and absences/tardies, all the time from anywhere, can be your "Best Friend". While you're on PINNACLE, sign up for the Parent Notifier to receive emails when your child is absent and if his/her grade drops! All you need is your child's ID number. Updating Student Contact Information

It is vital that each student has an up-to-date contact number, address, email and responsible person on file in case of an emergency. Parent(s) /guardians should contact the school immediately after any such changes. Please call 754-323-4000 and ask for one of the Grade Level Centers to make any changes.

Pines Middle School's mission is to ensure a safe and secure environment at all times. The Jessica Lundsford Act has required school districts across the nation to take additional precautionary steps to ensure the safety and well being of all students.With this in mind, children are prohibited from arriving on campus before 8:00 a.m. and remaining after 4:00 p.m. Our official school hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For your convenience, Pines Middle School offers aftercare service through Sunshine Childcare from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. for a marginal fee.

No student is to be left on campus during non-school hours unless they are enrolled in the aftercare program. The Broward County Social Services Department may be contacted if a pattern of neglect is established with your child. Students enrolled in school related extra curricular activity must remain with their club sponsor and/or coach(s).If you have any further questions regarding the aftercare program, please call Sunshine's corporate office at (954) 236-8850. Attention Parents:

If your child is receiving free or reduced lunch and you have not filled out a new lunch application for this school year, those benefits will end on October 1st and your child will be on full pay. Everyone must fill out a new application every year in order to qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. Si su hija o hijo esta recibiendo beneficios de alimento y esta pagando precio reducido o gratis y usted no ha llendado una aplicacion neuva para este ano. Esos beneficios se van acabar el primero de Octubre. Todo el mundo tiene que llenar una aplicacion nueva todos los anos para ser elegible para los beneficios de alimiento.
