Title I Requirements

COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT of the entire school (including the needs of migrant children) with information about the academic achievement of children in relation to the state academic content standards.
Describe the process utilized to conduct the comprehensive needs assessment for this school.

Using the results of last year's survey, Coral Springs Middle School will review student FSA scores earlier, and communicate this process with the parents earlier in the year.  This year, CSMS will go over scores in the first semester of the school year, instead of the second semester.  Teacher will meet with grade level administroro, grade level counselor, support facilitatiors, ESE Specialist and team members to discuss the prvious years assessment scores and sachievement levels.  This information will be used to help student achieve, and find areas to improve upon.  After the meetings with the teachers, administrative and support team, grade level counselors will meet with the students to go over the test scores and discuss their meanings.

In order for CSMS to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers, we  will work with talent acquistion and operations department in order to find highly qualified teachers that match our position/s offered.  This will be evidenced by our participation in the Teacher Recruitment Fairs and filling vacancies with candidates by interviewing at the fair.  The retention of our teachers will continue by offereing a climate and culture of learning and continued education through a variety of offerings school and district wide.  CSMS will continue to use the New Educator Support System, Professional Learning Communities and participate in teacher recognition programs and incentives.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - Coordination and Integration

Title I, Part A
Title I funds provide additional teachers to assist students, particularly low performing students.

In order to create an environment of learning and high achievement, CSMS will utilize funds to develop teaching methods, further enrich instructional methods through a variety of professional development, workshops and activities to move teachers to become more effective.  CSMS will begin the journey of Social Emotional Learning with the teachers as one of the professional development activities.  These opportunities will focus on all staff and students, but specifically, under performing students who have achievement gaps.  While working with teachers, we also want to work with parents to incorporate a partnership between school and home.  To do this, we will offer opportunities for family participation, through the Stallion Stampede, Title I Annual Meeting and Curriculum Night, which will transfer into higher achieving students.

Title I, Part C- Migrant
(Migrant-Title I schools have been advised if Migrant students attend their school)

CSMS does not currently have migrant students.  However, in the even that a migrant student register in the school, the registrar, (or any identifying staff) will notify the counselor and he/she will notify the school social worker and they will work together to ensure needed nutritional, health, housing and academic services are provided as needed.

Title I, Part D
Neglected and Delinquent

If a student is identified as neglected and/or delinquent, they will be connected to a school social worker through the Counseling Department in order to provide support and community resources.

Title II
(District professional development)

Teachers at CSMS will participate in professional development opportunities that are presented to help improve student achievement.  These opportunities will be based upon the Florida State Standards as measured by the Florida Standards Assessments.

Title III
(ESOL)

Coral Springs Middle School serves to following ESOL population:
6th Grade:  19 ESOL Students
7th Grade:  20 ESOL Students
8th Grade:  22 ESOL Students

All levels 1-2 Non English Speakers and Limited English Speakers are provided with a bilingual dictionary (in their hertage language) which they should be using in all classes to translate words. 
All current Active ESOL studnts 9LY's Levels 1-6) should be receiving the following accommodations in all classes:
-Heritage Dictionary
-Heritage Language Support-Whenever appropriate, ELLs should be provided with academice support in their native language.
-Flexible Scheduling-ELL's may take paret or a session of the test during several breif periods within one school day; however, a session of the test must be completed within one school day.
-Flexible Setting-ELLs may be offered the opportunity to be tested in an identified classroom setting with the ESOL or heritage language teacher acting as test administrator.
-Flexible Timing-ELLs may be provided additional time; however, a session must be completed within one school day.
An ESOL support teacher offers assistance to any active ESOL students.  We have a resource room available for students during 5th and 6th period where they get assistance from the ESOL support teacher.
 

Title X- Homeless
(Homeless- All Title I schools may complete with this statement)

Teachers and staff members are responsible for helping to identiffy homeless students and referring them to the Homeless Education program offered by the district.  The purpose of te Homeless Education Program is to identify homeless students, remove barriers to their education, including school enrollment, provide them with supplemental academic and counseling case management services as well as linkages to their school social worker while maintaining school as the students stable environment.

Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI)

SAI funds will be utilized to fund salaries for at-risk services in three classrooms.

Violence Prevention Programs

CSMS builds a culture and climate of violence prevention by adhering to zero tolerance for violence and bullying.  Programs are utilized to help students learn life skill to prevent present and future violence by participating in conflict resolution, mentoring, and supervision of hallways in between all classes, supervision of before and afterschool and modeling appropriate and non-violent behavior.  If there is an offender, the involvement of parents is immediate and can involve guidance and the resource officer.

Nutrition Programs

As part of the daily curriculum. CSMS offers health and nutritional education through Physical Education and the school lunch program.  These are based upon the federal initiatives of Broward County Public Schools Food & Nutritional Department.

Housing Programs

As needed, a referral will be made to the school social worker when a family is in need of food or housing.  This information will be passed along to administration and the counselor so it can be given to the school social worker.

Head Start

CSMS does not participate in a Head Start program as it is a middle level education intity and therefor not applicable.

Adult Education

When a parent, adult or other community member requests continuing education programs for ESOL, GED or other programming, they will be referred to the district's community school for services through our school cosial worker.  CSMS has a community education program on site, which meets after the school day.

Career and Technical Education

I order to provide opportunities for students to examine careers, the program Naviance is used with students in grades 6, 7, and 8.  These programs will help students explore careers based upon their character traits, personal interests and career desires that fit for them.  Technical education opportunities are available through clubs offered after school.  An example of this would be the robotics club.

Job Training

In 8th grade, students have the opportunity to participate in job training experiences through their annual trip to Junior Achievement Finance Park.  Some elective courses are offered to incorportate basic job training skills such as Introduction to Technology, and Peer Counseling.

Other

CSMS trains all teachers in the RTI process in order to idetify students that are behind in sills, what interventions to use with these students, and what to do when the interventions do not work.

CSMS does not participate in a pre-school transition program as it is a middle level school and therefore pre-school transitioning does not apply.

The mission of Coral Springs Middle School is to build parental relationships by creating opportunities for parentsl involvement in order to form a partnership to bridge the gap between school and home.  Our goal is to increase parental involvment by 10% participation from last years participation.

Stallion Stampede

Parents of incoming 6th grade students are invited for an evening to meet staff, engage in breakout sessions that focus on daily activities, the middle school culture and climate, ways to help their student be successful and useful websites and ways to be involved as a parent and help their student be successful.  The evening ends with a question and answer session.
