Title I Requirements

COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT of the entire school (including the needs of migrant children) with information about the academic achievement of children in relation to the state academic content standards.
Describe the process utilized to conduct the comprehensive needs assessment for this school.

Prior year assessment data from the FSA sores, BAFS scores reading scores internal assessments and diagnostics test were organized with graphs, tables, and charts. Information was organized to show individual teacher, grade level, and school-wide results. Individual student results were given to classroom teachers for their review.

The district's Talent Acquisition & Operations department, as well as a district level Teacher Recruitment Committee work collaboratively to retain and recruit highly qualified, certified-in-field, educators. Atlantic West Elementary School’s collaboration with the district is evidenced by participation in ‘Experience Broward’ Teacher Recruitment Fairs. Vacancies are filled with candidates interviewed at the recruitment fair and referred by the district's instructional staffing department. Retention of teachers is a top priority of our school. Teachers are cultivated and nurtured at Atlantic West Elementary School to grow professionally. We retain highly qualified, certified-in-field, effective teachers in our school by utilizing the Teacher Induction for Effectiveness and Retention  (T.I.E.R. Liaison), Professional Learning Communities (Reading/Math/Science Coaches), District Trainings (District Personnel), School-Based Professional Development (Leadership Team / Team Leaders), Teacher Recognition and Incentives (Administration).

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - Coordination and Integration

Title I, Part A
Title I funds provide additional teachers to assist students, particularly low performing students.

Staff Development funds are used to develop a comprehensive professional training program to improve delivery of instruction through a variety of workshops designed to move teachers to mastery and improve student achievement.

Parental Involvement funds are utilized to fund monthly academic parent nights that provide parents with new skills to support student learning at home. Improving the frequency and quality of family participation and increasing family literacy are also goals of our parental involvement component. Monies are used to purchase food, supplies/materials and provide stipends for teacher presenters.

Student  Intervention Support  is provided through the Reading Intervention teacher who works with 4th and 5th-grade students in the lowest quartile, the Science Coach providing push-in support to all classes along with the Science special and the Math Coach who coordinates small group intervention for students in the bottom quartile in math.
 

Title I, Part C- Migrant
(Migrant-Title I schools have been advised if Migrant students attend their school)

Three migrant students have been identified. Collaboration with community agencies will take place to ensure that needed services such as health and nutrition are provided. Remediation and tutoring services will be provided as needed

Title I, Part D
Neglected and Delinquent

Students identified as neglected and/or delinquent will be connected to a School Guidance Counselor and a School Social Worker through the Student Services Department who will provide support and community resources.

Title II
(District professional development)

Teachers participate in District and School-based professional development to improve academic teaching practices to enhance student achievement based on the Florida State Standards Assessment.

Title III
(ESOL)

All students are being instructed by certified, ESOL endorsed teachers.  Atlantic West Elementary School employs two paraprofessionals who work closely with our ELL population.  These staff members impact 60, A1 and A2 ELL students daily delivering academic language support and translation for assessments.  These staff members serve as liaisons between the school and ELL community.

Title X- Homeless

Teachers and staff members are responsible for helping to identify homeless students and referring them to the School Guidance Counselor and Social Worker who collaborate with the Homeless Education program offered by the district. The purpose of the Homeless Education Program is to identify homeless students, remove barriers to their education, including school enrollment, provide them with supplemental academic and counseling case management services. 

Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI)

 
SAI funds will be utilized to fund a Saturday Academy Camp to assist struggling students. 

Violence Prevention Programs

Atlantic West Elementary school implements the County Student Code of Conduct and follows the District Discipline Matrix. Our school enforces the District’s Anti-Bullying Policy and has a zero tolerance for bullying and violence. Bullying prevention programs are supported through Youth Crime Watch, Peer Counseling/Conflict Mediation programs, guest speakers and student assemblies.  Atlantic West Elementary School, in collaboration with our school resource officer, provide our 5th Grade students with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), a comprehensive prevention program designed to equip elementary students with the life skills to recognize and resist social pressures.

Nutrition Programs

Students are exposed to nutrition and education through their classroom teachers as well as during physical education instruction.  Students are also able to receive healthy breakfast and lunch through the free and reduced lunch program.

Housing Programs

Referrals are made to the school social worker, when parents are in need of housing or food.  Additionally, the front office staff takes note of families expressing a need and passes this information on to administration and/or the guidance counselor.

Head Start

To ensure school readiness, the Head Start Program provides literacy, math, and science curricula that align with the K-3 national standards to improve educational outcomes. This connection between curricula and child expectations has contributed to better prepare students to succeed in Kindergarten. An end-of-the year Creative Curriculum Continuum report, detailing students’ ongoing assessment, is placed in the students’ cumulative folder to familiarize kindergarten teachers with the Head Start students’ progress in the program.  Atlantic West Elementary School currently hosts two Head Start classrooms.  One class consists of 3-year old students and the other class consists of 4-year old students.

Adult Education

Parents and other adults of the community requesting ESOL, GED, or other continuing education programs are referred to the district's community school for services through our school social worker.

Career and Technical Education

Atlantic West Elementary School is a Sprouting STEM Magnet School that provides opportunities for students to examine careers in the fields of engineering, science, technology and math.   The program allows students to explore through the Engineer Design Process as they solve real-world problems.  Atlantic West Elementary School 5th Grade students attend Junior Achievement BizTown, an experiential education program that enables students to learn economic concepts in an interactive, hands-on environment.  Students prepare to actively engage in tasks directly related to the in-class curriculum they study for 4 weeks.  College Career Readiness Week and Dress for Success Day also support career and technical education.

Job Training


Through the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students work through rigorous curriculum and use technology to build skills and also research and experience different career fields, and colleges and universities

Other

Student Listeners - Selected students participate in the Listener program as recommended through our RtI Process. These listeners are trained through the district to work with students.

Best Buddies - Selected regular education students who demonstrate outstanding character traits participate in Best Buddies program where they peer mentor students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and promote schoolwide inclusive practices and one to one friendships.  Atlantic West also partners with Coconut Creek High School with their Best Buddies program.  

Legacy Boys - Black male students with the highest discipline infractions and meet daily with a black male mentor to work on social, emotional and life skills 

Coco, the therapy dog - Provides emotional support through scheduled classroom visits for students in the special programs and classrooms with students identified with high anxiety, behavioral and social needs.  

 

Pre-School Transition

Pre-School Transition

Atlantic West Elementary School services three classes of Specialized PreK ESE (formerly Preschool Learning Activities Classroom Experience-PLACE) and 2 Head Start classes. The teachers conduct vertical articulation meetings during the school year to ensure that the transition from the early childhood programs to kindergarten program is smooth. A Kindergarten Orientation is also held prior to the beginning of the school year. This gives the incoming kindergarten students an opportunity to meet their new teacher and get acclimated to their classroom. Additionally, parents are given an overview of the kindergarten curriculum and expectations.

The goal of Atlantic West Elementary is to increase parental involvement in school events to at least 60% for the 2018-2019 school year.  All parent involvement activities will include engaging activities that offer opportunities to learn about student achievement and available resources.
