Title I Requirements

COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT of the entire school (including the needs of migrant children) with information about the academic achievement of children in relation to the state academic content standards.

2017-2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy assessment data from the FSA, BA, Benchmark Assessments, and iReady Diagnostics Test were organized in graphs, tables, and charts. Information was organized to show individual teacher, grade level, and school-wide results. Individual student results were given to classroom teachers to review in team meetings and plc’s.

MLK Montessori Academy parents are an essential part of the assessment process. Parent surveys are sent home each spring to gather input concerning curriculum, environment, and communication. Results from the surveys are used to help create goals and objectives for the school improvement plan.

MLK Montessori Academy parents are often invited to meet with school administration to discuss student achievement results and strategies for improving test scores. Parental suggestions are discussed with staff and considered for school-wide plans.

The district's Talent Acquisition & Operations department, as well as a district level Teacher Recruitment Committee work collaboratively to retain and recruit highly qualified, certified-in-field, educators. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy School’s collaboration with the district is evidenced by participation in ‘Experience Broward’ Teacher Recruitment Fairs. Vacancies are filled with candidates interviewed at the recruitment fair and referred by the district's instructional staffing department. Retention of teachers is a top priority of our school. Teachers are cultivated and nurtured at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy School to grow professionally. We retain highly qualified, certified-in-field, effective teachers in our school by utilizing the New Educator Support System (NESS Liaison), Professional Learning Communities (Reading Coach), District Trainings (District Personnel), School-Based Professional Development (Leadership Team / Team Leaders), Teacher Recognition and Incentives (Administration).

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - Coordination and Integration

Title I, Part A
Title I funds provide additional teachers to assist students, particularly low performing students.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy Staff Development funds are used to develop a comprehensive professional training program to improve delivery of instruction through a variety of teacher workshops designed to move teachers to mastery and improve student achievement.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy Parental Involvement funds are utilized to fund monthly academic family parent nights that provide parents with new skills to support student learning at home. Improving the frequency and quality of family participation and increasing family literacy are also goals of our parental involvement family workshops. Parental Involvement funds are used to purchase food, supplies/materials and provide stipends for teacher presenting at family workshops.

Title III
(ESOL)

All Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy students are being instructed by certified, ESOL endorsed teachers, or teachers working to become ESOL endorsed.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy School employs a paraprofessional who works closely with our ELL population.  This staff member impacts 28 ELL students per day by delivering instructional support.  This staff member serves as liaison between the school and ELL community.
 
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy English Language Learners (ELL) receives reading and developmental language arts instruction by a certified ESOL and reading teacher. They receive additional support from an ESOL aide who provide small group language support in mainstream classes.  At our monthly parent nights, district personnel attend to provide language translations and information to parents in their home language.  Correspondence is also sent out in Haitian Creole and Spanish.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy teachers and staff members (SPARKS Social Worker and Community Liaison) are responsible for helping to identify homeless students and referring them to the Homeless Education program offered by the Broward School District. The purpose of the Homeless Education Program is to identify homeless students, remove barriers to their education, including school enrollment, provide them with supplemental academic and counseling case management services as well as linkages to their school social worker while maintaining school as the student’s stable environment.  The school’s community liaison ensures homeless students receives food on a weekly basis through the school’s carry-out program.
 

Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI)

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy SAI funds will be ulitized to fund a four week Saturday tutoring workshop to assist struggling students.

Violence Prevention Programs

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy school implements the County Student Code of Conduct and follows the District Discipline Matrix. Our school enforces the District’s Anti-Bullying Policy and has a zero tolerance for bullying and violence. Bullying prevention programs are supported through Peer Counseling/Conflict Mediation programs, and student assemblies.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy school builds a violence prevention culture through classroom instruction in anger management, conflict resolution bullying prevention, and the Broward County adopted character traits. In addition to the classroom instruction, all teachers and staff members received training on the Anti-Bully policy and CHAMPS training.

Nutrition Programs

Nutritional programs and health education are an integral part of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy school, specifically through the Physical Educational curriculum and federal initiatives of the Broward County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Department.  We are a Title I school with over 51% of students receiving free and reduce lunch.

Head Start

To ensure school readiness, the Head Start Program provides literacy, math, and science curricula that align with the K-3 national standards to improve educational outcomes. This connection between curricula and child expectations has contributed to better prepare students to succeed in Kindergarten as evidenced by FLKRS. An end-of-the year Creative Curriculum Continuum report, detailing students’ ongoing assessment, is placed in the students’ cumulative folder to familiarize kindergarten teachers with the Head Start students’ progress in the program.

Pre-School Transition

Pre-School Transition

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy School services two classes of Specialized Pre-K ESE (formerly Preschool Learning Activities Classroom Experience-PLACE) and two Head Start class. The teachers conduct vertical articulation meetings during the school year to ensure that the transition from the early childhood programs to kindergarten program is smooth. A Kindergarten
Orientation is also held prior to the beginning of the school year. This gives the incoming kindergarten students an opportunity to meet their new teacher and get acclimated to their classroom. Additionally, parents are given an overview of the kindergarten curriculum and expectations.

Based on the analysis of the parent involvement data, identify and define an area in need of improvement.

The goal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy is to increase parental involvement in school events to at least 60% for the 2018-2019 school year.  All parent involvement activities will include engaging activities that offer opportunities to learn about student achievement, test preparation, and available parental resources.

MLK ELO School PD -  To discuss curriculum best practices and student's data with teachers working ELO camp.  Also, to provide teachers with attenance sheets, class rosters, and teaching resources.
