Title I Requirements

COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT of the entire school (including the needs of migrant children) with information about the academic achievement of children in relation to the state academic content standards.
Describe the process utilized to conduct the comprehensive needs assessment for this school.

Throughout the entire school year we begin reflecting on practices that will need to be added or changed for the following school year.  Over the summer the leadership team met to dissect the most recent data from school specific assessments as well as state assessments.  We work together as a team to use the data to help determine the academic and social needs of our boys and our girls.  In order to meet these needs as a team we discuss the Professional Learning that will need to be provided to the teachers and staff.  The coaches create the Instructional Focus Calendars for ELA, Math and Science that they teachers will be utilizing throughout the school year.  The Instructional Focus Calendar ensures that the teachers are targeting each of the standards within that content area.
When the students return we administer the I-Ready Diagnostic to all the students for ELA and Math.  Additionally, the teachers in K-3 complete the BAS for all students.  In Grades 4 and 5 the BAS is only administered to the students who score at a Level 1 or 2.  We utilize this data make any changes to the instructional plans already in place.

Instruction by HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS in all core content area classes
List instructional staff and paraprofessionals that are NOT highly qualified (instructional staff only).

All instructional staff at Watkins Elementary School are Highly Qualified.  We do have teachers who are still acquiring their ESOL certification.

ATTRACT HIGH-QUALITY, HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS to the school.
Describe strategies that will be used to attract high-quality, highly qualified teachers.

When positions need to be filled at Watkins we work to recruit and hire only highly qualified teachers. Using the district Applitrack system we are able to post any open positions quickly for candidates to apply. When interviewing, a team is present at the interview. The team is comprised of principal, assistant principal, literacy coach, math coach, ESE Specialist, Guidance Counselor and the team leader from the grade in which we are hiring. If other members of our leadership team are available they will be invited to the interview as well.  Additionally, we attend the Job Fairs that the District conducts throughout the school year.
In order to retain high quality teachers at Watkins Elementary Magnet school we meet regularly as teams. The teachers and staff are continually participating in appropriate Professional Development and Professional Learning Communities. Additionally, it is so important that the teachers work on team building activities that help maintain the culture and morale of the school community in order to maintain a positive and supportive environment as we educate our boys and girls.

If teachers are brand new to the profession the District provides them with coaching assistance.  We are very fortunate to be a part of the TIF 5 Grant.  This grant provides a Master Teacher, Lead Teacher and a Peer Teacher who are a regular part of my staff.  These coaches are each assigned to three teachers who they support regularly throughout the school year on many different components of the job.

All teachers participate in professional development throughout the school year.  The coaches who are school based provide professional learning to the teachers throughout the entire school year that is specific to the content area. The coaches work with the teachers targeting the Florida State Standards at each grade levle.   As part of the TIF 5 Grant teachers participate in two mandatory professional development sessions. In addition, if there is professional learning provided by the District or the Cadre we ensure that we have teachers or staff members who attend.

Title III

Students who speak another language at the school are being instructed by teachers who are ESOL endorsed.  We do have several teachers who are still completing their classes and are considered out of field for ESOL. Pre-School Transition

Watkins Elementary reaches out to neighborhood preschools throughout the year. Several of the local preschools in our community have partnered with us to hold academic and professional trainings for our parents and those of the preschool. District staff has been instrumental in helping to train our parents and community. In March, the preschools are invited to an orientation presented by Administration, Support Staff and the Kindergarten teachers. Informational pamphlets promoting the event are sent to the local preschools. Students and parents come to the orientation and are able to visit the classrooms to see what the day is like in Kindergarten. Kindergarten Round Up is held prior to the new school year to orient parents about the requirements for Kindergarten and the expectations when their children begin at our school. Additionally, Watkins attends community events to disseminate information about our program and school. Parents are provided with tips for a successful transition into kindergarten.
