BEST PRACTICE #4

Scaling Up BEST Practices

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

School improvement is based on a continuous improvement model, using research-based accepted best practices, which align with student achievement needs, insure student progress, and may be revised when appropriate.

Goals

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving student achievement and why was this area chosen?

Both Mathematics and Reading will be the focus for improving student achievement since student assessment scores in Reading dropped 4 points and math dropped by more than 5 points from those of the previous year.  It is important to note, however, that there was substantial improvement among black girls' scores in both 9th and 10th grades, in both subject areas.

What specific BEST Practice(s) will be implemented or scaled-up to improve teaching and learning in order to increase performance within the SES Band?

In both Mathematics and Reading, Best Practice #3, Optimal Internal/External Relationships, and Best Practice #4, Continuous Improvement, will be scaled-up in an effort to meet with each individual student to review his or her most recent mathematics and reading scores in order to apprise each student as to what growth and achievement is required in order to personally improve achievement and scores.

Describe in detail how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaled-up.

In both Mathematics and Reading, Best Practice #3, Optimal Internal/External Relationships, will be scaled-up.  Teachers will build relationships with their students and meet with each individual student to review his or her most recent mathematics and reading scores in order to apprise each student as to what growth and achievement is required in order to personally improve achievement and scores.   The focus will be on the 9th and 10th grade English classes.

What specific school-level progress monitoring data is collected and how often?

Several progress monitoring data will be collected throughout the school year.  Common assessment data will be collected based on the schedule identified by the English and Math departments.  FAIR data will be collected quarterly and the Writescore (Reading and Writing) data will be collected during second semester.

How does the school ensure the fidelity of students not progressing towards school and district goals?

If students are not making progress towards the school and district goals the teachers will review their common assessment data and adjust their instruction based on the needs of the students.  Teachers will also utilize stations to work with students in small groups.

Various other methods to help students learn will also be addressed.  Tutoring will be offered in math, language arts, and science after school.

How does the school ensure that all classroom instruction is accessible to the full range of learners using Universal Designs for Learning (UDL) for effective instructional design (planning) and delivery (teaching)?

The school ensures that all classroom instruction is accessible to the full range of learners using Universal Designs for Learning (UDL) by focusing on the stimuli and affects of "what" students learn,  "how" students learn and process incoming information based on past experience or background knowledge, and "why" students learn looking at students motivation and engagement.  This will be done through providing continued professional development to staff and review of instructional data and assessment.

How does the school ensure Tier 1 Standards-Based classroom instruction is being implemented properly and effectively?

Student data will be constantly be reviewed to ensure that Tier 1 standards based classroom instruction is being implemented properly and effectively.  Every 4-1/2 weeks the D/F report will be accessed and reviewed to see if the Tier 1 instruction is effective.  If problems are found professional development will be provided to the teachers to change their method of instruction or look at the assessment given to assess if the students are progressing.

Describe texts used for core, supplemental, and intervention programs at each grade level. How does the school ensure students have access to a balance of literary and informational text in a variety of mediums?

The Collections, Edge and the Algebra and GeometryTexts continues to be the primary text which drives instruction.
Software used by the various departments continue to augment teacher instructional efforts; these include Writescore, Achieve3000, Edge, Khan Academy, USA Test Prep and are referenced in each Professional Learning Community.
Response to Intervention (RTI) teams continue to monitor the 100 most at-risk students who are identified and attributed to the program at the school year's beginning.  The monitoring of this group monitors the academic progress of each student, in addition to the social and emotional well-being of each.
The PASL Program which our personalization program that focuses on building relationship allows teachers to have discussions with students regarding their social and academic needs.
