Lauderdale Lakes Middle School is located in the 33309 area code City of Lauderdale Lakes.  The current student population in 873. It is a Title 1 School.  Based on data from the 2017-18 school year, there is a significant number of students whose attendance rate is below 90%.  The data is as follows:

Attendance Goal:
The goal of this attendance plan is to decrease the percentage of students with attendance below 90% at each grade level by 4% by the end of the 2018-19 school year.

Tier 1 Strategies for Attendance - Address all five core ingredients. Tier 1 is aimed at 100% of students, parents, school staff, and community stakeholders. This is where you cast a wide net. Strategies are general to reach the largest audiences and include all employees and stakeholders.

Tier 1 Strategies to increase attendance

  1. An attendance report will be retrieved from Data Warehouse by groups to review the attendance trends.
  2. The designated person will contact students and their parents, who have unexcused absences to determine the reason for the absences.
  3. Ensure that teachers are recording attendance accurately through the use of a flag report that is pulled by the DMT on a daily basis.
  4. Each week the names of ten students who have perfect attendance from the previous week based on attendance report is read over the intercom during the morning announcements or during the power hour, and are congratulated for attending school every day for the past week.  The students are provide a coupon that can be utilized to receive and a treat at the designated time.
  5. Students who have perfect attendance each quarter as measured by the quarterly attendance report will receive a perfect attendance certificate and a coupon for a treat.  In addition, they will have their names placed on a bulletin board for recognition.

Tier 2 Strategies and Interventions to Improve Attendance - Address all five core ingredients. Tier 2 identifies students using early warning indicators to make connections with students and families at the onset of the school year or emergence of patterns of non-attendance. Early warning indicators include prior year chronic absenteeism, 3 or more absences in the first 4 weeks of enrollment, more than 10% of school days absent in any time period from the beginning of enrollment.

- Tier 2 represents between 10-20% of students at all schools in Broward County. This is true at individual schools and across the District.

- Chronic Absenteeism: Absent for 10% or more school days. These absences include excused, unexcused, and suspensions as days of instruction missed.

Tier 2 Strategies to increase attendance (Early Intervention)

  1. A district generated warning letter will be sent home to parents of students who miss five-days of school as shown by attendance report at the time the student reaches the five day unexcused absence mark. IMT will make contact with the parent in order to excuse the absences.
  2. Students who have 6-7 unexcused absences will be referred to the school Social Worker Referral for attendance, and a parent conference will be held.
  3. A Physician Verification form will be utilized when parents report that absences are due to their child being chronically sick.
  4. A parent meeting is scheduled and an attandance agreement is established and signed.  
  Addtionally, Counselors/Social workers will review the skipping/attendance report each Monday.  Their schedule will allow them to meet with 10 students each day (1 period).  These students will receive the following interventions: Talking to the students (why are they missing school/tardy), Contacting the parent, setting up conference if necessary, putting student on daily progress sheet, reviewing grades.

Tier 3 Interventions - Address all five core ingredients. Tier 3 is the highest level of intervention and support for students that are absent 20% or more school days during the year.

- At most schools, Tier 3 interventions are utilized for about 5% (or less) of the student population.
