Essential Question:
How does diversity impact our environment?

Project Desciption:
Teachers and students at Deerfield Beach High School all explored the global theme of diversity through their own curriculum disciplines and benchmarks standards. Business math classes explored diversity in the market place through a study of stock market trends and practices of major corporations. Another math class used data analysis to investigate how where people live affects the quality of their life. IB Japanese explored diversity among the regions of Japan and created travel brochures and commercials to market each region's special attractions to others. Biology classes explored diversity at the most fundamental level of cellular biology. Literature students reading Cry the Beloved County explored diversity and the impact of apartheid in South Africa, while a reading class used a variety of research, inquiry and reading strategies to conduct a comparison of different natural environments.

Teachers/Classes:

Ms. Thomas (10th Grade Language Arts): Students read "Cry the Beloved Country," by Alan Paton. Collaborative groups researched specific issues related to diversity raised in the book, such as the role of Apartheid and the development of the Civil Rights movement in South Africa. Students created movies as final projects with some students assuming roles of famous South Africans and an interviewer.

Ms. Reid (10th Grade Math): Students explored diversity in the global market place. Collaborative groups choose a large corporation such as Nike, Apple, Disney, and others to investigate. etc. They studied the business practices of that company and collected data on the company's stock trends over time, from the company’s initial public offering (IPO) to the present time. Students presented their findings using movies and multimedia presentations.

Ms. Benitez (10th Grade Reading:) Students used reading and inquiry strategies to explore the natural world as they investigated the broader essential question: How does diversity impact the environment? They used Inspiration concept mapping and three column note-taking to brainstorm ideas and organize their research. They used the digital resources such as United Streaming, the online databases in the BEEP Student Portal, and pre-selected websites, such as Nasa.gov, for their research. They presented their research using movies and multimedia presentations.

Ms. Reinmund (10th Grade Math): Students explored the impact of diversity in the places that people live through an investigation of the following essential question: How does where we live affects how we live?" Students compiled data about the cities they researched, including population and area, average climate, median income, cultural and sports offerings, cost of housing, food, and other factors to determine what makes a city an appealing place to live. They developed a budget using spreadsheet software on what would be needed to live in that city, including the cost of a mortgage loan, car loan, gasoline, food, and so on. Students presented their findings via multimedia presentations.

Mr. Collazo (9-12th Grade Japanese – IB): Students explored the diversity within the different regions and prefectures of Japan and investigated what made them distinct from each other. Collaborative groups chose one region or prefecture to research its topography, climate, history, tourist attractions, and local festivals. Students presented their findings and used their skills in communicating in Japanese to create hand drawn postcards decorated with Japanese calligraphy. They used computer word processing and publishing software to create a "travel brochures." Finally, they created a commercial using iMovie to market their prefecture to others.

Ms. Caputo (9th Grade Honors Biology): Students explored diversity at its most basic level - the cellular level - and presented their research findings in the form of a full research paper. They took a key concept from their research and scripted and presented in a visually understandable format using iMovie.

Ms. Kay Gordy (Media Specialist and DBHS GLIDES Coordinator): supported GLIDES students with research and research strategies.
