Step by step lesson overview:

Introduction:

Remind class of previous lessons. When we investigated the character of the two main candidates we found that they are equally qualified having gone to good colleges, served in the military, serving poor neighborhoods in Chicago, serving as Congressmen and Senators. We also will review the way the Electoral College votes based on the way each state votes.

1. Discuss the Electoral College. Compare the school to the country, each class is like a state. Since Electoral votes are based on states’ population, we will say that each 5 students get 1 electoral vote. Since we have 19 students in the reading group that give them 3 votes. To see who gets the 3 votes we need to see who everyone will vote for. While discussion going on students pass out T-chart and Activexpressions.

2. Bring up T-chart on Document Camera. Explain that we will look over the platforms of the two candidates on each issue. Then we will mark our T-chart based on the facts found on www.timeforkids.com.

3. Bring up www.timeforkids.com on the Promethean board. Go to the election site that they students have been reading over on the platforms of each candidate. Bring up the first of the seven issues, Education. Compare and contrast the two candidates stands.

4. Have each student decide for themselves who they agree with more and put a check under that candidate for Education. Bring up the Promethean flip chart on the issues and have them key in their vote on Education. Being up the percentage chart and on the class t-chart mark who the majority of the class favored. 5. Repeat with the other issues: Environment, Health Care, Iraq, Jobs, Economy, and National Security.

6. After the students have voted on the Activexpressions for all 7 issues look at the class T-chart to see who will get the three Electoral Votes for our class.

7. Put individual t-charts into their folders
