Lesson Objectives:

The student will successfully describe the difference between a covalent and ionic bond and will be able to classify the bonding type according to solubility of the solid in water and ethanol, electrical conductivity, physical phase change and summarize the properties of each binding type.

Technology used:

Active Expressions (interactive response), cameras, video cameras, laptop computers, document camera, iPhones.

Step by step lesson overview:

This will most likely take 2 lessons, since we are doing a lab, but can be modified if needed

  • The students will conduct an experiment in class and will be responsible to create a digital lab-report in a form of a podcast.
  • The teacher will use the Active Expressions as a tool to ask pre-lab questions and calculations.
  • Students will be arranged into groups and collect the needed materials for the experiment.
  • Students will create a script and/or storyboard with the information they would like to have in the podcast lb-report.
  • Students will conduct the experiment in class and will be videotaping and recording footage for their podcast using the laptop computers, cameras and video cameras.
  • Students will compile their information and create their podcast lab-report using programs such as Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto and keynote.

How does this help students master the objectives?

The students will utilize the technology in class to create a podcast lab-report that will cover the essentials of a written lab-report. The use of technology will allow all students to take part in the creation of the podcast, since they will each be responsible for a different section and will have to select a way they want to present their report and make it happen! The use of technology will provide an interesting and challenging way to provide the teacher with the information that should be written in a formal a lab-report.
