Lesson Objectives:
- Students will measure the lengths and widths of polygons by using virtual tools on the whiteboard.
- Students will calculate the perimeter of various polygons as they practice their addition skills.
- Students will apply the concept of perimeter to realistic situations.
Technology used:
Clickers (ActivExpressions), Interactive Whiteboard (Promethean Board), Virtual Classroom (Elluminate)
Step
by step lesson overview:
- Distribute student materials- clickers, cutout polygons, rulers, paper, pencil
- Enter Mrs. Francis’ Virtual Classroom through Elluminate; a group of students from another location will be present in the virtual classroom. Step
- Review double-digit addition by reminding students to begin adding the digits in the ones place. This review will be done with both groups on the whiteboard within the virtual classroom.
- Share the Perimeter Flipchart in the Virtual Classroom giving both classes access to the document. This flipchart will be used to conduct the lesson between both groups.
- Use the clickers to conduct a “Check What You Know” poll as the collaborating teacher takes a poll of her class. Each teacher will view and analyze the data produced by their students’ responses.
- Begin the lesson by defining perimeter as “the distance around a figure”.
- Ask, “If the perimeter is the distance around a figure, what operation would be used to calculate the perimeter?” (Addition)
- Using the shared flipchart and the virtual ruler from the whiteboard toolbox, the teacher will model how to position a ruler in order to measure the lengths and widths of polygons. Label each side of the polygon and use addition to find the perimeter.
- Provide the opportunity for guided practice where the students use their physical rulers to measure the lengths and widths of their cutout polygons and calculate the perimeter.
- Allow additional practice where students from both groups will takes turns completing the practice activities on the flipchart
- Distribute the follow-up independent activity where students are given a list of everyday items such as their dresser, doorframe, windowsill, etc. to measure and calculate the perimeter.
Sunshine State Standards covered in lesson:
Math Skills:
(MA.A.3.2) The student understands the effects of operations on numbers and the relationships among these operations, selects appropriate operations, and computes for problem solving. (MA.B.1.2) The student measures quantities in the real world and uses the measures to solve problems.
How does this help students master
the objectives?
- Clicker (ActivExpression): allows for immediate assessment, provides instant data
- Interactive Whiteboard (Promethean Board): enables interactive lessons/activities, easily accesses information/resources
- Virtual Classroom (Elluminate): enables collaborating with others (share ideas), creates 21st century learners
