Program History Head Start began as an eight-week summer program in 1965. Although the program was located in the public schools, the grantee was the Economic Opportunity Coordinating Group, the local Community Action Agency. In October of 1976, the School Board of Broward County became the grantee, serving 375 students. Over the years, the program has expanded to currently serve 2040 Head Start children and 80 Early Head Start children. |
