Head Start is a national, federally-funded program that provides free comprehensive services for from low-income preschool children and their families. These services include educational, social, medical, vision, dental, nutritional and mental health. Every child receives a variety of learning experiences to foster intellectual, social and emotional growth. Each class of 18 children is staffed with a certified teacher and instructional aide. Parent involvement is an essential part of the program and parents are provided with opportunities to participate in the decision-making process as well as links to educational and social programs that support their efforts to become self-sufficient and achieve educational and vocational goals. Parents also receive training and education to foster their understanding of and involvment in the development of their children.
