Go Green Program for Output Reduction
Meet Our Eco Hero

Betsy Hill

Betsy HillWe our proud to introduce Mrs. Betsy Hill, Peer Counseling Coordinator at New River Middle as our new Eco Hero of the month! Mrs. Hill has created a Recycling Program at New River not only in her own individual classroom but has expanded it throughout our entire school over a period of two years. Her efforts not only model being environmentally conscious in her own room as she teaches her students to become good stewards of the earth and to recycle, but her students then go out to the remaining classrooms spreading the benefits of being good stewards of the earth encouraging all rooms to become part of the recycling program. There are many teachers and their students involved in recycling, as well as the secretaries and other support offices. She and her students continue to get more involved in the regular school wide pick-up. Mrs. Hill’s efforts of recycling have not only spread the word of being responsible, but has helped to lighten the load of the custodians, as most of the classroom waste is recyclable.

Mrs. Hill’s program began with a few recycling cans in a few classrooms. Now she has the BBW (Big Blue’s on Wheels – as her students call them) that are her workhorses of the program. The Peer Counselors take off with the BBW’s hunkering down the hallways visiting the classrooms to empty the small size recycling containers into the BBW’s before taking the accumulated waste to our recycling dumpster. Various classes go out on different days to collect our bins, so the Peer Counselors are sure to reach all who are participating. She also schedules visits to the Media Center and the various offices in our school to be sure all are involved.

Betsy Hill with her students at New River MiddleMrs. Hill’s class was recognized for their outstanding spirit on “Wear Teal Day”. She needed to issue passes to her students to allow them out of class for their celebration. We all laughed when her passes were about an inch and a half square as she printed THIRTY passes on ONE sheet of paper. Even her students thought it was quite funny but then said “Yeah that’s Mrs. Hill hardly using the paper”. Her students also do deliveries of many of our school flyers. Any papers left over and also any misprinted papers near the copier are used as re-use papers in her classroom. So second life papers are used all the time in her room.

She continues to remind the teachers on a weekly basis that the recyclers are on their way out and if they are on the schedule to have their bins ready and if they are not to let her know and she will gladly add them to her team. Other teachers are also letting their students know the benefits of treating our earth with love and care and encourage them to also be good stewards. Our science teachers take it to the next level drawing the parallel with keeping our school green and then letting them know the beach clean-up and the waterway clean up are also ways to help our earth stay healthy.

Again, congratulations Mrs. Hill for being nominated our Eco Hero of the Month! Thank you for everything you're doing to help our schools Go Green!
