As a part of the Public Affairs class in the fall semester of 2006, a group of students under the direction of Mr. John Pellegrino, aimed to complete a project that would honor Fort Lauderdale High School's standing as the oldest public high school in Browrd County and its traditions and ensure a lasting community presence. The group, consisting of Daniel Metter, Peter Gies, Jennifer Vogel, Dayal Lalwani and Daniel Levy, decided that having the street in front of the school co-named "Flying L Drive" would provide the desired recognition.

With this goal in place, the group engaged in activities, such as meeting with elected government officials, drafting resolutions, and meeting the requirements set out by other government entities. The first contact was with Mayor Jim Naugle, who endorsed the idea and led the group to work with City Commissioner Rodstrom and discussed the goals of the project and the tasks that needed to be completed.

Commissioner Rodstrom put the group in contact with the appropriate government authorities to move forward. The group also sought approval from the local civic association and school administration before proceeding to the Broward County School Board. The group continued these efforts through the Spring semester of 2007 and in May received a resolution adopting the new street name. The project was not quite done, as the city's approval was still needed.

All of the group members were graduating seniors, except foDayal Lalwani, Peter Geis and Daniel Metter r Daniel Metter who returned in the fall of 2007 to finish the work. In October of 2007, the City Commission of Fort Lauderdale passed the resolution adopting the street name. Ultimately, after an eleven month process, the group's goal of creating an ever lasting tribute to the legacy of FLHS was achieved. A special thanks goes out to all those who helped the group in reaching their goal.
