Questions and Answers

1. What is our usual schedule?

Student hours are 7:30-2:40. Hours differ on exam days and early release days.

2. Where should parents drop-off and/or pick-up students?

Parents are to use the gate along Bass Creek Road to drop off and pick up students. No one is to park along the outside of the fence on Bass Creek Road. Any vehicle parked in that area will be ticketed. Staff parking is at the east end of the campus.

Student sign-outs are located in the front office in the administration building.

3. What is the ID badge policy?

All students are issued an ID badge. Students are expected to have their ID badges on their person at all times while on campus or on a school sponsored trip. These badges are used for identification, cafeteria and vending machine purchases, media center checkout, and other uses. ID badges must be produced when asked to be seen by a staff member. Violation of this policy will result in immediate consequences. It is the individual student's responsibility to maintain and carry his/her badge. Lost/stolen badges must be replaced immediately at a cost to the student. Any bank monies on the missing card is the responsibility of the student and will NOT be replaced at school expense.

4. What if I want to park on campus?

Parking is a privilege. Student parking decals must be displayed for on campus parking. Decals are $75.00 each and must be placed on the inside corner of the windshield (driver's side). Decals are issued based on non-weighted GPA, high to low, with a minimum GPA of 2.0 required to be eligible. For students with a lower GPA, a contract may be available, depending on the spaces still open. The students with the highest GPA's have the first option of purchasing a decal. In order for the school to determine your eligibility, you must pick up a "Student Vehicle Registration Form" from the office. Return the form with photocopies of your driver's license, proof of insurance, and car registration of the vehicle you will be driving on the back. You must return this form to the office. Once it is determined that you are eligible, you will be notified when and where to bring cash or money order to receive your parking decal.

5. When do I eat?

Students will be eating on one of two lunch shifts. The first lunch is 10:52 - 11:28. The second lunch is 12:28 - 1:04. Determination of which lunch shift the student is assigned to is by the location of the third hour class. In general, first floor rooms eat during the first lunch (with a few exceptions) and second floor rooms (plus the exceptions) eat during the second lunch. Check the room assignment to be sure.

6. Can I ride a bus?

Bus transportation will be provided to and from school on a daily basis to those students who are qualified under the Broward School District policy relating to transportation.

7. When will my schedule be available?

Schedules are available on the first day of school. A newsletter will be mailed detailing the new student orientation, where students can walk the campus and locate their first block class.

8. Will I receive my first choice of elective classes?

Every effort will be made to accommodate your elective priorities. However, we cannot guarantee your elective choices. It is essential to choose alternates with careful consideration.

9. How does EHS prepare students for the FCAT?

FCAT skills are taught across curriculum areas, and more importantly, ninth and tenth will have their English and FCAT prep reading as a full year, paired course. Some math and science courses are also paired.

10. How can I be sure that I am taking the right courses for graduation, scholarships, job preparation and/or college admissions?

Consult the sample four year plans and graduation requirements listed in the Curriculum Guide. Students will meet with their guidance counselor each spring to choose classes and review credits earned, remaining requirements and career intentions. Additional information is available through www.browardschools.com virtual counselor section, www.Facts.org and www.myfloridaeducation.com

Also check the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. It is a lottery-funded scholarship to reward any Florida high school graduate who merits recognition of high academic achievement and who enrolls in an eligible Florida public or private post-secondary educational institution within three years of high school graduation.

The Bright Futures Scholarship Program is the umbrella program for all state funded scholarships based on academic achievement in high school. The three scholarships are the Florida Academic Scholars Award, the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award and the Florida Medallion Scholars Award. Your counselor has detailed information concerning each scholarship and any changes that may occur in the eligibility criteria. Students and parents should contact their guidance counselor or access the Bright Futures web site at http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf/ to be informed of any changes.

11. What is block schedule?

Most high schools in Broward County and throughout the country offer variations of block scheduling. At EHS you will be taking eight classes per year, four in the fall term and four different ones beginning in the winter term. You will earn a credit for each completed, passed course, or a total of eight credits per year. This type of schedule gives students the opportunity to concentrate on four subjects at a time.

12. What is EHS’ policy on schedule changes?

Careful consideration should be given to choosing courses, schedule changes will only be processed for reasons of placement error. If you are placed incorrectly, pick up a schedule change form in the first three days of the semester in the guidance office and your counselor will process the change in the order it was received.

13. What can I do to ensure success in high school?

Attend every day. Come prepared. Obtain any supplies from the school store that you may have forgotten that day.

Use your planner! Listen to announcements and read school newsletters. Notify the registrar of any change of address/phone numbers.

Parents: Note days of interim reports and report cards. Speak to your child’s teacher immediately if you have questions. Attend open house night to meet your child’s teachers. Contact your house guidance counselor to arrange a parent/teacher conference if necessary.

Grades and Grade point averages in high school are cumulative over the four year period, so make each day count.

14. What about lunch?

EHS has two lunches per day to accommodate all students. We cannot change schedules to a preferred lunch period. We have a closed campus for lunch. Our cafeteria serves the school lunch in addition to quick food alternatives. The student ID card contains a money chip that can be replenished to purchase snacks, drinks, and sporting event tickets.

15. How much time is there between classes?

Six minutes.

16. Does Everglades have extracurricular activities?

Definitely! Get involved. Studies correlate student success in high school with involvement in extracurricular activities. High school sports are competitive, contact the coach or athletic director to attend an informational meeting and try out. Seek out the sponsor of special interest clubs and honor societies to find out how to join.

17. Does EHS offer tutoring?

Free tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 2:45 to 3:45 in room 398.
