Supplementary instructional materials have been provided to assist schools with implementation of the multicultural mandates.  In addition to these materials, the curriculum manuals/guides below are available for use in integrating multicultural content into the curriculum.  Click on manual/guide titles below to download.  Files take time to download.

 Florida Department of Education - Resource Manuals on Holocaust Education (State Mandate)

The Commissioner's Task Force on Holocaust Education developed a series of lesson plans and resources to assist teachers to incorporate this critical period in history into character education programs.  Manuals for appropriate grade levels were sent to schools by the Florida Department of Education.

Florida Department of Education - African and African American History Curriculum Frameworks (State Mandate)

The Commissioner's Task Force on African American History developed curriculum frameworks for grades Pre K-12. This infusion model is organized and designed according to the developmental ranges, each with an interdisciplinary theme.  This allows teachers flexibility in adapting curriculum content to the needs and experiences of students. These frameworks recommend a format and content focus that emphasize a humanities based, multicultural approach for all levels of instruction.

Multicultural Department Curriculum Manuals/Guides

African Americans: A Journey through Time Manual, Grades Pre K-12

(State Mandate)

The African Americans: A Journey Through Time Manual, Grades Pre K-12 was developed by the Multicultural Department to assist teachers of Pre K-12 students in the planning and implementation of the history and culture of African and African Americans and their contributions.  It contains background information, including the African Diaspora and the contributions of African Americans in Broward County.  In addition, the manual includes a timeline of important events in African and African American history, lesson plans, subject area correlations for incorporating materials into the curriculum, and a list of supplementary instructional materials. Goal 3 Standards, Sunshine State Standards, and Benchmarks are included in each lesson plan.

 

Each school and center received this manual.  A variety of supplementary instructional materials was sent to each school and center.

 

 Hispanic Americans: Many Cultures, One Voice Manual, Grades Pre K-12 

(State Mandate)

The Hispanic Americans: Many Cultures, One Voice Manual, Grades Pre K-12 was developed by the Multicultural Department to assist students and teachers in the study of Hispanics, their heritage, and contributions to the United States. It includes lesson plans, classroom activities, handouts, short biographies, web sites, a timeline of important events, maps, and a variety of additional supplementary resources, including a bibliography to provide additional reference materials available at the national and local levels. Goal 3 Standards, Sunshine State Standards, Benchmarks, and Corresponding Grade Level Expectations are included in each lesson plan.

 

Copies of this manual were sent to each school and center.  Supplementary instructional materials were sent to each school and center.  These materials include five supplementary texts: (1) The Conspiracy of Silence:  Hispanics'  Vital Role in the American Revolution; (2) The Hispanic Room in the  Library of Congress; (3) The Indian Homeland; (4) The Survival Game after Columbus; and (5) A Short History of Florida.

 

Women's Contributions to the United States: Honoring the Past and Challenging the Future Manual, Grades K-12

(State Mandate)

The Manual was developed by the Multicultural Department to be a curriculum complement to existing textbooks and ancillary materials.  It provides background information, FCAT-correlated lessons, activities, and technological resources on women's contributions from various cultural groups.  It also includes biographical highlights of notable women who have made contributions to Broward County, Florida, and the nation.

 

Each school and center received one kit from The Central Processing Lab for the media center.  Each school and center received copies of Women's Contributions to the United States: Honoring the Past and Challenging the Future Manual, Grades K-12.

 

Haitian Culture Curriculum Guide, Grades K-5

The Haitian Culture Curriculum Guide, Grades K-5 was developed by the Multicultural Department.  It provides background information for teachers on Haitian culture to enrich class activities and discussion on Haiti and its people; literacy-based lessons and activities for students to explore the richness of Haitian culture and their own; and resources to support instruction and extended learning opportunities. Goal 3 Standards, Sunshine State Standards, Benchmarks, and Corresponding Grade Level Expectations are included in each grade level lesson plan.    The kit includes one Haitian Culture Curriculum Guide, Grades K-5; Slides of Haiti; a resource book for teachers entitled, Haiti: The History and Culture; and two student reading books, Tap Tap and My Friend, the Tree.   Each elementary school and K-12 center received onekit from The Central Processing Lab for the media center.   Each elementary school and center with grades K-5 received six Haitian Culture Curriculum Guides, Grades K-5, one for each grade level chairperson, grades K-5.

The Haitian Culture Curriculum Guide, Grades 6-12 was developed by the Multicultural Department.  It provides background information for teachers on Haitian culture to enrich class activities and discussion on Haiti and its people; activities and FCAT-correlated lessons for students to explore the richness of Haitian culture and their own; and resources to support instruction and extended learning opportunities. Goal 3 Standards, Sunshine State Standards, and Benchmarks are included in each lesson plan.  Each guide contains two Experience Haiti Sun-Sentinel Newspaper in Education Supplements.  

Each secondary school and center received one kit from The Central Processing Lab for the media center.  The kit includes one Haitian Culture Curriculum Guide, Grades 6-12; two Experience Haiti Sun-Sentinel Newspaper in Education Supplements, and one copy of the book, Caribbean Connections: Moving North. Each secondary school and center received one copy of the Haitian Culture Curriculum Guide, Grades 6-12 and copies of the book, Caribbean Connections: Moving North.

Holocaust Studies Curriculum Guide, Grades K-5 (Now Available)

(State Mandate)

The Holocaust Studies Curriculum Guide, Grades K-5 was developed by the Multicultural Department in order to facilitate the integration and infusion of Holocaust Studies into the elementary curriculum. Lesson plans are indicated for interdisciplinary and cross-curricular use. Grade levels are suggested but are flexible and can be easily adapted for other levels.  The lesson plans are literary based.  Goal 3 Standards, Sunshine State Standards, Benchmarks, and Corresponding Grade Level Expectations are included for each lesson plan.  Background information and instructional strategies are provided to facilitate the use of the guide.    The Holocaust Studies Curriculum Guide, Grades K-5 Kit includes one curriculum guide and two student-reading books, Molly's Pilgrim and Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story.   Each elementary school and K-12 center received one kit from The Central Processing Lab for the media center. Each elementary school and K-12 center also received six Holocaust Studies Curriculum Guides, Grades K-5, one for each grade level chairperson, grades K-5.

Grade levels are suggested but are flexible and can be easily adapted for other levels.  The lesson plans are literary based.  Goal 3 Standards, Sunshine State Standards, Benchmarks, and Corresponding Grade Level Expectations are included for each lesson plan.  Background information and instructional strategies are provided to facilitate the use of the guide.   The Holocaust Studies Curriculum Guide, Grades 6-8 Kit includes one curriculum guide; a video entitled, "Anne Frank and Me"; two young adult novels, The Diary of a Young Girl and Number the Stars; and pictures of artifacts from the Holocaust.   Middle schools and centers with grades 6-8 received one kit from The Central Processing Lab for the media center.  Each language arts and social studies chairperson received one curriculum guide, grades 6-8.
