Nova Schools - Frequently Asked Questions

Nova Schools FAQ

When can I apply for Nova schools?
Applications for the 2017/18 school year are accepted from December 1, 2016 until February 8, 2017. The deadline is February 8, 2017 for all timely and complete applications. If an application is received after the deadline it will be considered a late application and will not be processed.

Where can I apply for a Nova School?
Prior to the application deadline, an application was available online and in hard copy from all Nova schools and the Demographics & Student Assignments office at 600 SE 3rd Avenue, Ft Lauderdale, FL 33301. An application is required for each student that is applying.

What are the specifics when completing an application?
Ensure that you fill out all sections of the application. Should you have a sibling currently attending and will continue to attend a Nova school, be sure to indicate this on the application. Make sure that the address identified is the same as what your current school has on file. If your child is not registered in a Broward County Public School, you must secure a student identification number at your home boundary school before submitting the application. You are responsible for providing accurate information on the application.

How will I know if my child was accepted?
After the application deadline, parents will receive written notification from the Demographics & Student Assignments Office regarding the status of the application. The letters will be sent to the address on your child's school record and should arrive during the month of March.

Does my child automatically get accepted if I have another child that is already attending a Nova school?
If an applicant is a sibling of a student who is currently attending and will continue to attend a Nova School during the next school year they will be given priority for a seat if available. If there are more sibling applicants vs. seats available, a random computerized selection process will be conducted to award sibling seats and create a sibling wait-pool.

What is the definition of a sibling?
A sibling is a biological, adopted, foster, half, or step brother/sister who shares the same parent/legal guardian as a student that is currently attending a Nova school and will continue to attend a Nova school for the following school year.

If I am applying for more than one child will they all be given a seat since they are siblings?
No, if you are submitting applications for more than one child there is no guarantee of a seat at the same time. This rule also applies to twins.

If selected, will my child receive transportation?
Yes, there will be transportation for all students residing in Broward County.

Can I apply for a Nova School if I do not live in Broward County?
No, all applicants must currently reside in Broward County in order to apply for a Nova School.

I am a School Board Employee. Can I use my employment status to guarantee my child a seat at Nova?
No, Nova Schools are by application only and do not provide a priority for employees throughout the district.

Should my child be required to take a leave of absence from a Nova School, will their seat be reserved until they return?
The parent of the student requesting a leave of absence must complete a leave of absence form in order for their child's seat to be reserved. This form must be signed and approved by the Principal of the Nova school as well as the Director of the Demographics and Student Assignments prior to the student leaving. This form may be obtained from any of the Nova Schools. Any student that withdraws from a Nova School without getting an approved leave of absence may not return. He/she will be required to reapply through the Nova application process for reacceptance.

A leave of absence will only be considered under the following circumstances:

  • A family that has temporarily relocated outside of Broward County may be granted a leave of absence for a maximum of one year.
  • A student that has been recommended by the School District to complete a particular program may be granted a leave until they have completed the program.

If my child is accepted, will I be required to apply every year?
No, once your child is selected he/she may continue to attend Nova Schools until they graduate high school.

If my child is in the Nova wait-pool, will I be required to apply next year?
Yes, the wait-pool will only remain in effect until the next application period ends. All parents will need to re-apply during the next Nova application window if their child is not accepted.

How are students selected to attend the Nova Schools?
A random computerized selection process is conducted to assign available seats in each grade level at the Nova Schools.
