1. What does school choice mean?

The School Board of Broward County Public Schools is committed to providing quality educational opportunities for all students. School-aged children living Broward County are assigned to a school (boundary school) based on their primary residential address and grade level. School Choice allows parents to request for their child to attend a different school.

The School Board supports the following types of School Choice: Innovative Programs, Magnet Schools, NOVA, Opportunity Scholarship Program, reassignments, College Academy at Broward College, Broward Virtual Schools, and the McKay Scholarship.

For additional information please see School Board Policy 5004.1.

No. The HB 7029 School Choice bill that passed earlier this year requires that, starting with the 2017/18 school year, every Florida school district must have a "controlled open enrollment plan", which allows students to enroll in any school in the state that has not reached capacity. Broward Schools already has a controlled open enrollment plan in place through the School Choice process.
