Analysis and Community Input

Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

Disclaimer: The following school boundary proposals have been submitted by community members for the 2016-2017 school year. These proposals were not created by District staff and they solely reflect the ideas and opinions of the community members who proposed them. Although these community members have worked with District staff to gather data and ensure that the posted proposals meet the mandated criteria of Class Size and School Concurrency Level of Service, these proposals may or may not meet additional considerations for establishing school boundaries, align with School Board Policy 5000, or be in the best interest of the communities, students and schools impacted. All proposals, inclusive of community comments, will be presented to and discussed by the School Board for consideration.
Proposal Number C1
Date Submitted September 22, 2015
Submitted By Rafael Gonzalez
Schools Involved Nova Middle, Driftwood Middle
IZones Involved Nova
Description Matriculating fifth grade students attending and living within the boundary of Davie Elementary School to be given priority for 50% of sixth grade seats remaining at Nova Middle after seats awarded to matriculating Nova elementary students, children of active duty military personnel, children of teachers at Nova schools, and siblings of current Nova students. After this proposed priority, 25% of seats still remaining would be given to applicants from schools above 110% of permanent FISH, as currently stated in SB Policy 5004.1.

Projected Enrollment Data

Considerations Reviewed

Class Size Impact This proposal is not anticipated to have an impact on Class Size.
Level of Service Impact This proposal is not anticipated to have an impact on Level of Service.
Enrollment Impact This proposal could reduce enrollment at Driftwood Middle school by approximately 50 students per year, depending on the number taking the Nova Middle choice. Driftwood Middle is currently enrolled at 86.0% of its permanent capacity. Only 3 current students in this area are assigned to New River Middle so there is not expected to be any effect on that school's enrollment.
Diversity Impact Has the potential to impact diversity at Nova Middle and Nova High by increasing proportion of students originating from Davie Elementary.
Feeder Pattern Impact No impact.
School Proximity Impact Would decrease travel distance for Davie Elementary students who are awarded seats at Nova Middle. Many would be able to walk to school.
Neighborhood Integrity Impact Might have an adverse effect on Davie Elementary community as slightly less than half would attend Nova Middle while others would remain assigned to Driftwood Middle.
Natural Barrier Impact No impact.

#KeepOurKidsInDavie - Our family has embraced the community of Davie. We love our schools and we contribute. We volunteer. We care! We want our son to attend middle school in Davie; not to be bused out to Driftwood middle. Nova Middle has some seats that could benefit our Davie children. Please support our grassroots efforts to keep our children attending school and contributing to the community in which we live and love.

im in support of the davie elementary school, my son is in 5th grade and i would really like for him to be considered for a seat at nova middle. our proposal wasnt taken into consideration last year i would hope to receive better news this year since he will be graduating for davie elementary. thank you

davie needs a middle school and we have a nova school, so i would like to go to my kids there
6.   Tanell Samuels at 08:12 AM on 10/8/2015
As one of the parents of two students in Davie Elementary and I would like my two children to attend Nova Middle and Future Nova schools because it is right across the street from where I live and it would be so much easier for them to attend. Last year it was proposed but never heard. I would love for this opportunity for my children to attend such a wonderful school. They deserve a chance of academic success in their neighborhood.

I had one of my kids in 5th grade last year and i was truly hoping for her to attend Nova Middle school. I went to the meetings last year and I saw i was not the only parent that wanted the same as I wanted for my kid.Sadly our proposal was not heard by the school board. this year i have another child in Davie Elementary and I am looking forward for him to have the opportunities that was denied to my daugther of attending this grate school that is closer to where we are living. If this proposal is taking in consideration it will benefit my family and many many others in our community, which is growing every year. It will also give us a relief and peace of mind that our children are close to home instead of taking buses to other middle schools far from us. I really hope and pray that this year the school board could take their time and listen and approve this very beneficial proposal..
THANK YOU!
A proudly Mother of two gifted program kids!

The parents at Davie Elementary again support a proposal that gives preference to graduating 5th graders to enter Nova Middle School, which sits right across the street. This proposal allows that a preference be given to these students -- only after seats have been allotted for children matriculating from Nova Blanche and Eisenhower elementary schools; after children with parents in the military or who are employees at Nova schools; and after preferences are given to siblings of current students. Even then, it only secures 50% of the remaining seats. It is a narrow proposal that retains the Nova system but also provides Davie Elementary families an alternative to having to bus their children more than five miles away to Driftwood Middle. Thank you for your time and consideration.
10.   GINA ALVAREZ at 08:33 AM on 10/8/2015
I'm in support of this proposal because is not taking away from Nova middle, but ensuring that our 5th graders benefit from the their wonderful curriculum. We reside across the street from Nova, but my child (whom scored in the 99th percentile on the FSA) is being denied the advantages that Nova has to offer. The district saves money by allowing our local students the opportunity to attend their neighborhood school, instead of bused to another area. For example, the cost of fuel, less bus drivers needed, less traffic for that particular area, and many more. This will be a win-win for everyone involve. The 5th graders attend school close to home, in return Nova receives bright local students, and dedicated parents who are more than happy to serve and support a wonderful school.
11.   Felix Martinez at 08:38 AM on 10/8/2015
Please support the No. C1 proposal. Davie Elementary 5th graders should not have to be put on a bus to attend a middle school more than 5 miles away when there is a middle school -- with available seats -- right across the street. Nova Middle teaches to the same curriculum as all Broward County middle schools. There no longer is a distinction between it and the standards set for any other middle school in the county. The only thing that sets it apart is that it has a lottery to determine seat assignments. Just because it was always handled that way is not a good argument to keep it that way. This proposal is a very small step to rectify a situation that for years has forced neighborhood children to be bused outside of their neighborhood. Please give this proposal the fair consideration it deserves.
12.   Maria Martinez at 12:25 PM on 10/13/2015
Please support this proposal. This is about choice and common sense. Graduating Davie Elementary 5th graders should be given a preference to attend the middle school that sits right across the street. When Florida developed its state standards, curriculums became standardized. What does that mean? It means Nova Middle's curriculum and standards are similar to others around the county. Nova is not a magnet program. It is not a Montessori program. It is a standard educational curriculum. This proposal is a limited step in the right direction: It continues to allow the matriculation from the Nova elementary schools; it gives preference to children of parents in the military; it gives preference to siblings. Only then would Davie students be given preference. Please approve this proposal. At minimum, please hear us out. We were not given that opportunity last year because of a breakdown in the process.
13.   Dara Collins at 05:52 PM on 10/13/2015

I respectfully request that Prososal C1 be rejected. I am strongly opposed to Proposal C1 submitted for Davie Elementary students to priority for the seats at Nova Middle School. The proposal undermines the intent of the Nova schools to be representative of the entire county by lottery and unfairly favors one zip code. The proposal is clearly in violation of SBBC Policy 5004.1 that assignment priority for the Nova Schools only be granted to: dependent children of military, siblings and school board employees. Merely living near Nova and being zoned for Davie Elementary doesn't give preferential treatment. The proposal transforms Nova into a neighborhood school. A very similar proposal was rejected last year. The Nova Zone schools consistently perform well – why change something that is proven successful? If passed, it would drastically reduce the number of spaces available to students from across the district. There would be a very minimal amount of seats available for students outside of Davie to be accepted by the lottery. There is a great possibility that even siblings of current students would not be selected would cause hardship for many current Nova families. Moreover, families could bypass the lottery by renting and/or moving into Davie prior to registering for middle school. Once accepted, they could live anywhere in Broward but could stay at Nova.

Supporters argue they pay tax dollars in Davie, that they should have the option to send their child to Nova, they shouldn't have to bus their children to school. Basically that as residents of Davie, they should be able to walk to their middle school, that they should get preferential treatment over all other students that reside in Broward County, and it appears that the Town of Davie favors this proposal since it would increase property value. These arguments do not support the passing of this proposal. All Broward County residents that pay tax do not get to select any school – especially a magnet, I/B or lottery school because they live in the area. Most cities in Broward don't have a middle school in walking distance. When parents moved and/or rented in Davie, they knew what schools their children were zoned to attend.

The Nova Zone was established for ALL Broward County residents to create a community of schools that provide a seamless K-12 education. As Broward County has developed and population has changed, so has the population of our schools. This proposal would destroy this result.

Driftwood, an under-enrolled A rated school, could become further under enrolled. The proposal does not have a cap and could potentially reassign approximately 700 students to the Nova Zone reducing the enrollment at Hollywood Hills High by 20%. The proposal completely alters the very foundation of the Nova Zone system as being representative of all of Broward County and should be rejected.

14.   June Reid at 08:06 PM on 10/13/2015
This is among the few good choice schools that give students from different comunities to opportunity to attend without consideration of grades or test scores. To change the boundary requirement would reduce the number of spaces available and would deprive many kids the opportunity to experience quality education. This would essentially force more kids to go to their boundary schools, which do not always offer the highest quality education. Nova should be allowed to maintain itscsratus as an open school that is available to any child. I am not in support of this proposal.
15.   Melissa Rajzynger at 08:08 PM on 10/13/2015
As the saying goes...if it isn't broken don't fix it. Many of us parents who's children attend the Nova system had to apply & hope they got in. We all are likeminded parents who want the best for our children. Boundaries shouldn't allow this change to effect the Nova system. Please don't allow the boundary change to take away other parents chance to have their children attend that take the time to apply...like the rest of us!!!
16.   Sara Klavan at 08:16 PM on 10/13/2015
I think it is unfair for this small area to monopolize an opportunity that is currently intended for all of Broward County.
17.   Michael Coburn at 09:32 PM on 10/13/2015
Reducing the diversity of Nova Middle School defeats the entire purpose of the Nova Schools. This would also be unfair to the students that would lose their seats due to being unable to afford housing within the boundary.
18.   sebrina higgins at 10:26 PM on 10/13/2015
I would feel better if my children went to Nova. My kids could walk there instead of getting on the bus.If there was an emergency i would be able to get there faster. It would save the school board money on buses. I support this.
19.   Paul Hughes at 10:28 PM on 10/13/2015
I am a Nova Titan alumni, that lives across the street from Nova Public Schools. When I was a kid, there was a waiting list. I only want my kuds to experience not only the better school, but the appropriate school for my gifted 5th grader that excels in scholastics. Please consider this request a plea for family continuance of a Nova Alumni experience.
20.   Robin siff at 04:14 AM on 10/14/2015
I am opposed of this bill. Since nova has begun, it has been a lottery school. This allows the school to serve as an independent school. The students are choosen from all areas of Broward county to fill the diversity Quota. This allows the school to allow to match demographics of Broward county. All these Davie students are invited to apply to nova middle. Nova is an amazing program and diversity is important.
21.   Lynden Aiken at 06:28 AM on 10/14/2015
This change makes sense, the children and young people should go to school close to home.
22.   Patricia hessler at 07:07 AM on 10/14/2015
I am in support of this proposal because children should not be bused when they have opportunity to go to a school in their neighborhood. Having lived through bussing when my children were growing up I can tell you there are many adverse reactions from parent participation to adfter school programs. Please do not relive the mistakes of many past school districts
23.   Thea Parsons at 08:43 AM on 10/14/2015
Middle school is a time in a child's life when they transition into young adult hood through their adolescence. It is crucial to have your child in the best possible environment for this transitional time in their life. With this proposal accepted, I will be able to have my child in a middle school that is within our own community, a middle school that is readily accessible to me because of it's proximity to our home. This location will give me, as a parent, an opportunity to be an active participant in my child's school as a volunteer or supporter and give my child a sense of security within an environment that is familiar to her. I personally remember being bussed to a middle school that was not near my home and the distraction and discomfort that proved to be for me in those years of my education. That was necessary because there was not a middle school in my area. However, in this situation, we have Nova Middle School right within our community. Give my child and these other children the chance to learn in an environment that is familiar and safe for them. This proposal is nothing more than a proposal to do what is best for the children. Everything else is ancillary.
24.   Frances Molina at 08:48 AM on 10/14/2015
Nova should remain as a lottery program. All kids from Broward County should be given a fair chance. It is an excellent system and everyone should have a chance to attend.
25.   kelly kupfer at 08:50 AM on 10/14/2015
I would like my child to attend Nova Middle School. We live on 39th ct in Davie and I want him close to home. Please consider. Kelly Kupfer
26.   Kristen North at 08:58 AM on 10/14/2015
Keeping my son in Davie allows my family to be involved and volunteer in his school...conveniently. 5 miles distance makes everything more difficult. Carpooling with other families and sharing the care of our children can't happen when we don't live and attend school in the same community. Please help us keep our family time close. Thank you.
27.   Trina Gonzalez at 09:22 AM on 10/14/2015
I completely agree and support the change to allow Davie Elementary students the right to attend school in their community. These children are deserving of the town they live in to have the school they attend be near to their homes. Times changed from the past when Nova was a test school and now it is equal to the others in education, so it just makes sense to allow kids in the town to have seats in their town. Times change and Nova needs to change with it.
28.   BANMATTIE MAHARAJ at 09:25 AM on 10/14/2015
I do have a graduating fifth grader at Davie elementary and the approval of this proposal would be a definite godsend, giving absolute importance, to the relevance of distance and proximity of my residence and nova middle. The fact is that the approval of this proposal would benefit all graduating 5th graders and especially, for the major concerns of parents who are not comfortable with sending their child, on a school bus, to travel several miles out of the district, when a valid alternative, is within walking distance.
29.   Patricia Alonso at 09:39 AM on 10/14/2015
My feeling as a parent is that our children deserve to have the best advantages and that means being able to stay in the community that they live in! Let's Keep our Kids in Davie
30.   Cynthia Hamby at 09:54 AM on 10/14/2015
Davie students should have the right to attend school that is located in their neighborhood.
31.   Randi Amaya at 10:01 AM on 10/14/2015
I support Boundary Proposal No. C1, as it will not impact class size or level of service but it will give Davie kids the opportunity to attend a local school and not have to travel by bus to another school.
32.   Kimberly De Jesus at 10:12 AM on 10/14/2015
I'm a parent of Davie Elementary and on behalf of the school I support this decision 100 percents.
33.   Emilio Camacho at 10:54 AM on 10/14/2015
I support it 100%. Why should my tax dollars be spent unnecessarily bussing local kids that far away when the school is right across the street. The amount of extra busses, gas, and drivers needed to take all the local kids to Driftwood is wasting tax dollars. Also, not to mention the convenience of Nova's proximity to the local residents makes it easier for parents and kids to attend after school activities, meetings and PTA's.
34.   Monica Palmero at 10:58 AM on 10/14/2015
kids attending to Davie Elementary should be able to attend to Nova Middle School. It will have a positive impact in our community and parents will feel safer with it.Personally I will love my child could have this possibility.
35.   Heidi Wolfson at 11:17 AM on 10/14/2015
It is very important that the children who live in Davie have access to a school in their own community. Parents, as well as children, deserve the respect and convenience to have this choice especially since it doesn't hurt the enrollment at Nova Middle School.
36.   Patrick Kibler at 11:52 AM on 10/14/2015
This proposed boundary change will be great! Please approve it. Lets keep our kids in Davie!
37.   Meghan Pugliese at 01:17 PM on 10/14/2015
I think that the students from Davie Elementary should be able to attend Nova Middle School to keep the sense of community and consistency in the students' lives. It will be safer for the students and their families to attend Nova Middle School since these families all live right around this area. It will also be effective for the students to continue attending the same school together so that the children can stay with their friends and continue the school community they have already established.
38.   Zena Whelan at 04:11 PM on 10/14/2015
Please let the local children stay in their own neighborhood and go to the local school instead of being bused further away when there are seats available at the local school. This makes sense in every aspect including the environmental impact of CO2 emissions. #KeepOurKidsInDavie
39.   Stephanie Castro at 05:56 PM on 10/14/2015
I'm a parent of two elementary students at DAVIE elementary. My son will be in the graduating class this year and I'm hoping and praying that this proposal is approved this year. I went to the meeting last year and what we need is support from every parent.. Why should we send our kids across town to another school in a different city when we have an middle school in our neighborhood...were residents of the town of DAVIE not Hollywood so why waste taxpayers money busing kids across town when we have an school right across from DAVIE elementary.. Give us parents an peace of mind..please parents let's continue to fight for our children... Thank you
40.   Aleka Noriega at 06:20 PM on 10/14/2015
If the kids at Davie elementary want to go to Nova Middle, they should have to go through the lottery system just like everyone else because they aren't a Nova school. Nova has kids from all across the county that come and the kids from Nova Blanche, and Nova Eisenhower. If we let the kids from Davie elementary come the school will be overpopulated, and it already is.
41.   Francis Koster at 07:03 PM on 10/14/2015
This plan is nonsensical and biased. First of all the only reason this plan was proposed at all was because, Nova Middle and high school have a higher grade point average then Driftwood middle and the resulting neighborhood high school. Second of all this plan has the ability to reduce racial diviersity in the Nova schools which is bad because young people should be exposed to the most cultural and ethnic diversity possible and with race tensions so high in this nation do we really want to cull diversity in our schools. Third of all this plan would destroy the equal oppertunity that thousands of students get when entering the lottery system to enter the nova school system. From preschoolers to eleventh graders thousands have an equal oppertunity to go to nova. If this plan succeceds it will destroy thousands of family's dreams for a better education and life for their children and will only leave the wonderful oppertunites nova has to offer to a select few. Fourth of all this plan was created by town nationalism. Town nationlism is like regular nationlism but on a much smaller scale. Just look in the comments to see for your self. People are bragging about how the kids of Davie are better then everyone elses kids. Much like Hitler said blue eyed, blond haired people are better then everyone else. This is why I think this plan would not work,
42.   Jill Tescher at 09:03 PM on 10/14/2015
Hello, my name is Jill Tescher and attend Nova Middle School. I believe that Davie Elementary school should not be automatically applied to Nova Middle School. Nova Middle is a special type of school which contains of people from all over Broward County. If we get rid of this program, Nova Middle would not be such a special and top school if we got rid of this program. If kids from the Davie Elementary School want to go to Nova Middle School, they should have to apply like everyone else did to get into Nova Middle School. Nova Middle School should remain a non-neighborhood school.
43.   Ronald Thompson at 10:39 PM on 10/14/2015
I think that this boundary proposal should not be past but revised in some way so that the amount of children that come through to Nova Middle School from Davie Elementary is not as high as the boundary proposal wants it to be. Although the students of Davie Elementary are right across the road, they should have no advantage over any students that are coming in from Nova Blanche Forman or Nova Eisenhower Elementary. There should be a fair lottery aside from the Nova Chain (Eisenhower and Blanch) that will determine in a fair and square way whether or not the students should be accepted into the Middle School. Over all this boundary proposal should NOT be passed due to the unfairness of the proposal referring to the importance and "line" that has been created for students to attend Nova Middle School.
44.   maryuri acosta at 11:22 PM on 10/14/2015
I am supporting this program because Davie kids should bring their talent in Davie around
45.   Jana Kelly at 11:52 PM on 10/14/2015
In consideration of all the other students who may want to attend Nova Middle, I do not support this boundary proposal. While it may create more efficiency for the transportation of families who live nearby, it eliminates the chances of attendance for those who do not have the luxury of being a Davie resident. Nova has never been about where you live; it has been about opportunity. By accepting this boundary proposal and allowing the Davie Elementary students to go directly onward to Nova Middle, this is beating out much of the other students who live elsewhere and have been trying to get into Nova. About half of the currently enrolled students at Nova Middle are not from Nova elementary schools. This should tell you that we are compiled of a vast diversity, which is not necessarily a detrimental factor. In order to attend Nova, the system is the same for everyone, no matter who you are; there is a lottery. Lotteries have the connotation of chance, of pure luck. Everyone in Nova has been picked from the lottery system. Why should the Davie Elementary children be subjected to a higher standard of privileges? I say to reject the boundary proposal once again, and instead of using location to determine who will become a Nova student, we use fairness.
46.   Carla Arce at 12:12 PM on 10/15/2015
As a substitute teacher, I can only say this change would improve Nova Middle
47.   Myriam & Luis Villegas at 12:32 PM on 10/15/2015
I believe that my child should be able to attend the Nova Middle school if there are available seats. I know parents that have their child attending there and live for from Davie and have the previlige to have their child attend. We currently have a higher cost in renting or buying in this area, in my place I have been renting in a high cost apt being that I am close to the Nova school's but can't not even get my son in the school that is in the boundaries. Please help!
48.   Francisco Contreras at 01:21 PM on 10/15/2015
I am not supporting this program because Nova Middle school is right now 50% from Blanche and Eisenhower and the other 50% comes from the lottery. I am also disagreeing to this because the way Nova is set up right now helps it gets its unique and better education, letting the kids from Davie Middle get 25% but it will be better if they join the lottery because if we let them get 25% priorty they Nova will become a neighborhood school, This will take away Novas unique way of letting kids into the school and this might even grade average go down. Also Nova middle is a good learning right now allowing the kids to join because they go to Davie middle might make the enviornment worse , since Nova's lottery lets the school see some of the kids before they join the school letting us see there grades and if they have any crimes or anything under those circumstances. These are some of the reasons that i am not supporting this because Nova can become a neighborhood which would make the enviornment go down.
49.   Jose Vargas at 03:21 PM on 10/15/2015
My daughterand I live in Davie, we have a beautiful town with wonderful schools right within our town's limits. She should be able to go to school in Davie, not Hollywood. My child deserves a good education without placing the burden of having to travel unnecessarily.
50.   Angela Singh at 04:32 PM on 10/15/2015
It makes 100% sense for a graduating 5th grader to attend Nova Middle School, considering it is right across the street and follows the same curriculum all of BCP middle schools use.
51.   Damyen-Chance Johnson at 06:00 PM on 10/15/2015
This boundary proposal is basically the same as last year's proposal with a few changed this proposal should not be considered again. I think it is unfair to allow kids to go to the school they should enter in the lottery like all the rest of us have. Think of it this way if you keep kids who are trying their bests to even try to get in the school it isn't fair to take that away from the to let some kids across the street that isn't a nova school to come to our school. If you do this it will make it even harder for kids outside of this program get in the school. You'd basically be skipping a huge line just to get in the school that is why I believe you should not consider this boundary proposal because it is not fair to take away people's rights.
52.   E. Rogers at 06:34 PM on 10/15/2015
It may cause Nova Middle to become a neighborhood school. If it does, don't you think that just takes away how special this school is. I know that 50% of Nova is Blanche and Eisenhower and the other 50% is other kids, but isn't that what makes it thrilling? If we make it 25% of other kids, then we may miss out on the amazing talent. I don't mean to hurt anyone but please do not let this proposal pass.
53.   Erika juarez at 06:37 PM on 10/15/2015

Anyone should be able to go to nova middle I don't think it should be a lottery program because that is not fair and if it wasn't like that it would be easier for some people because some people live close to that school and they can walk there and if there is an emergency there parents can pick them up faster. Also Nova middle school gives good education and it has a high school provided and it would be easier for a lot of people.

overall it will make life easier and better education for kids and better transportation

54.   Estefano Ruiz at 07:21 PM on 10/15/2015

Nova middle teaches the same curriculum as all Broward County middle schools. We don't have any special programs like how magnet schools do, but we do allow an equal chance for everyone in the Broward County area to get into nova. I can understand on the parents' side why they would enjoy Nova and how their children are honors, gifted, and that they deserve a good school, but if that's true like the parents say and nova has the same curriculum as all the other schools in Broward County then it shouldn't matter which school they go to they will succeed. Also there is this really big loophole to getting into Nova. Families could bypass the lottery by renting and/or moving into Davie prior to registering for Nova Middle School. As soon as they are accepted they could always move anywhere they wanted to in Broward and still stay at Nova. Last, This will reduce the diversity of Nova Middle School, and that defeats the entire purpose of the school. I don't really like the idea.

55.   Shania Pitter at 07:24 PM on 10/15/2015
I do not support this proposal. Nova is a school full of students from different parts of Florida. These students entered the lottery, and earned their place at Nova fairly. Davie Elementary is a regular public school, and bringing these students to Nova, would change the school dramatically. Nova would be a regular public school, and would not have the normal high ratings that it has now.
Also, Davie Elementary is 74.5% white, which would change Nova's diversity rate by a lot. Nova has students of all races, that each have equal opportunities to learn and succeed. Davie Elementary coming to Nova would affect this highly, which most of its population most likely will be white.
I do not support this proposal in Davie Elementary's student coming to Nova Middle just because it's closer or it has a better learning system. Parents should apply to the school like every other student's parents, and wait until their child gets it. It is unfair to the parents who do not live in the area and want an equal chance in their child receiving a better education, or learning system.

I am a student at Nova Middle School. I did not go to one of the Nova Elementary Schools like most of the school. I had to get in by entering in the lottery system like everyone else who didn't go to one of the elementary schools. Therefore, it isn't fair for them to get in just because they go to Davie Elementary. It took me six years to get in and they just automatically get in? That ruins the lottery system because they aren't a Nova school! Nova is not a neighborhood school, so that does not make sense. There will be a slimmer chance for non-Nova kids to get in and that isn't right. Nova is special for the lottery system and it won't be anymore if kids from Davie Elementary are allowed in just because their school is close. There already is too much kids in our school, so it's just going to make the problem worse. I know what it's like to try to get into Nova, so now we are going to make it harder and more unfair?
57.   Diane Cherenfant at 07:35 PM on 10/15/2015
I do not agree with this policy I think this is very unfair and really does not make sense nova is an out of area school therefore people from other places other than the nova elementary have a 50% chance of getting to come to nova middle or high. The fact that Davie elementary thinks it fair that they get 25% of that 50 is just absurd and truly unfair. Yes, they are preferably close does not give students the right to just move on across the street I know it is more easier to do such but other people take time to get to a such great school that they work hard to get in to they had to have the grades and the attitude to get in this school so some deserve more than others put all together they work hard. I'm sure students from Davie elementary also work hard but nova has nearly hundreds of kids trying to get in because of the school grades and quality so I just strongly disagree with this policy and this policy should never ever be brought up again even if one or two terms changes just but fair to others its apart of this society
58.   Daniela Delgado at 07:51 PM on 10/15/2015
I think that it should be accepted.Evey child should have an opportunity to be able to go to a school with good education from the best professional teachers. Many kids may not have this choice to be accepted to a great school like nova middle or elementary causing them to fail in their future careers and future, many kids must have this great choice from everywhere around davie schools to each participate to a new vision of learning. Each kid will have a much brighter future with our very educational teachers. With these many kids wanting to participate to attend this school will be an honor to educate these other students to have a great future ahead of them, hopefully this could lead many kids to have great careers in their adult life.As long they are able to learn and lead to a successful education, these kids will be very glad to come to our school and be able to enjoy it with new faces and new friends along with their brand new knowledge about the many things that could happen at our nova middle school.
59.   Rachel Eloy at 08:29 PM on 10/15/2015
This proposed policy is utterly outrageous in my point of view for many reasons. The biggest one being is that if you want your child to go to Nova Middle apply for them since Kindergarten. A lot of parents from Davie Elementary are complaining about gas and for some of them Nova Elementary and Nova Blanche Forman are closer. If they are so worried about saving gas, they should have started worrying six years ago when they were picking their child's Elementary school. And now they have have a problem driving a few miles extra. Another solution is to let their children take the bus, they are not babies anymore. Some parents are also arguing that it will save the school board money for buses and I must say this was not thought through well. There are still going to be needed buses when the children that are not accepted into Nova go to their second choice middle schools. Other parents argued the curriculum is the same, so why should their children have to get shipped to another school. Nova is an excellent school with privileges that other schools don't offer. For example, our amazing new law room and News Team. Our teachers are the best of the best. Nova has been a lottery program since Day One and I think it is meant to stay that way. In conclusion, Nova Middle is the way it is for a purpose and it shouldn't be changed. *If I have offended anyone in any way I must say I am not sorry, because my opinion is deserved to be heard.
60.   Dylan Dorn at 09:06 PM on 10/15/2015
I am a nova middle student. I am very suprised when my teacher said that this might happen, I was like wow. It will take away all of our diversity and will change Nova for good. If this happens than one of my best friend probably wouldn't be here. I think this is the worst idea that can happen to nova. Nova is different and successful for one reason and it is not being a home school. This will basically turn Nova to a home school. It will change Nova it will change everything about Nova. If this goes through you should just call Nova Davie Middle and High. Also Nova has been successful for many years why change the program. As my father always says "if it's not broken don't fix it". Please take this note to consideration. DON'T CHANGE NOVA
61.   Alice Sakhnovsky at 09:17 PM on 10/15/2015
Nova schools should remain equally accessible to all students by application and lottery. The schools have never been intended to favor students within a certain proximity, so each parent was aware of that since placing their children in school. In all fairness, if the board wants to favor one non-Nova elementary school above all others, the names of all of the elementary schools should be put in a hat and one picked to be the "favored" elementary. If Davie is picked, fine; but favoring physical proximity would disenfranchise the fair chance for whatever other students would have been picked through the lottery process -- which Davie students have an equal, but not "more equal" chance at. If there are non-proximity reasons Davie parents don't want to send their kids to Driftwood, then the board should address those concerns to make Driftwood better.
62.   Sierra Van Tongeren at 09:18 PM on 10/15/2015
I believe that Davie Elementary students should not have a 25% higher chance of getting into Nova Middle School because the school happens to be nearby. It is not fair for one school to have a 25% higher chance to get into Nova while leaving all other schools with a 25% chance. I believe it is good to have a diverse school with kids from all over Broward county who came from different elementary schools. To me, this is not a very fair idea.
Also, a lot of kids want to attend Nova Middle School because it is great in academics and extra curricular activities but unfortunately not everyone can. I also believe that if Davie Elementary is able to get a 25% higher chance of getting in, then Nova Middle will grow with all the same kids, giving hopes up for all kids that wanted to attend Nova Middle for schooling.
63.   Kayan Anderson at 09:33 PM on 10/15/2015
I being a student attending Nova Middle think that this proposal deal of Davie Elementary taking up 25% of Nova's space is simply asinine. The kids who come from everywhere outside of Davie or not from Davie Elementary or Nova zone schools is what makes up our beautiful diversity and sets us apart from other schools who might just be neighborhood schools. Also the schools majority race would be white and it would just put us in line with the other schools who's majority races white while all the other races such as Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native Americans, and other would be minority.
64.   Michelle Puentes at 09:41 PM on 10/15/2015
I am opoosed to this proposal because nearly half of the chance to go into Nova Middle will be taken away just because Davie Elementary Parents feel that they dont want to enter like everyone else.It is not fair for people around who really need their children to go to this school. It should be all fair and equal.
65.   Bryan Rodriguez at 10:05 PM on 10/15/2015
I am an 8th grader at Nova Middle School and truly believe the proposal should be rejected. First of all, the proposal undermines the intent of the Nova schools to be representative of the entire county by lottery and is unfair to the students who had to enter the lottery themselves. Also, The proposal transforms Nova into a neighborhood school. Nova Middle should only grant dependent children of military, siblings and school board employees. This is why I believe the proposal should be rejected!
66.   Anderson Francis III at 10:44 PM on 10/15/2015
Personally, I don't like this new rule for many reasons. The first reason I don't like this rule is because I live outside of the natural barrier. This new rule will affect my little brother, who will try to get into Nova Middle next year. This will also affect the younger people living in my neighborhood and other neighboring cities that are not in Davie. They will not be able to get into this wonderful school as fairly as I did. This rule is unfair to the future kids of Nova that live outside the natural barriers. Kids like me have little to no chance of getting into this school that should be equal to everyone. This proposal shouldn't be allowed to pass because of the unfairness it puts upon the people who don't live in Davie but want to go to Nova.
The second reason why I don't like this new rule is because this is unfair to everyone else outside of the borders. They have less of an opportunity than the kid living across the street. Kids can't get the education at the school of their choice and in my opinion, that is just not fair. It just makes no sense that kids who are not fortunate to live as close as they want, have a lesser chance of getting into Nova. To me, it shouldn't matter where you live or who you know. It should be all about your performance in school and fair to everyone in Broward County. To conclude, the new rule proposed for Nova boundaries is not fair and shouldn't be passed.
67.   Cassie Leontsinis at 11:23 PM on 10/15/2015
Nova Middle School has been part of a lottery system for many years. The lottery system allows Nova Middle School to be a unique and diverse school. The diversity comes form having students come from far distances outside what would be a neighborhood school boundary. By going outside those boundaries the lottery systems also allows for diversity in cultures as well. I understand how some parents may feel about wanting their children to be able to go to Nova Middle School without having to join the lottery, but if local students are allowed to come into Nova Middle School it could upset the cultural diversity already in place. Also, by changing the lottery system and allowing up to 25% of the students come from the Davie Elementary School, we eliminate the cultural diversity and current environment that has made Nova Middle School the success it enjoys. The cultural diversity present at Nova Middle School is what makes it unique. If we start letting people from Davie Middle School (without going through the lottery), then our school will become a neighborhood school and will not be as diverse and special as it is now. Thank you.
68.   Sara Chirla at 01:09 AM on 10/16/2015
I disagree with this boundary proposal. I understand that Nova is closer to Davie Elementary than Driftwood. But, I also know that Nova is unique because it takes in students from many different schools from different areas. If this boundary proposal is approved, then we are keeping students that may live in bad neighborhoods from being able to get a good education. Driftwood is still a good school and is not that far away. If we let students from Davie Elementary in automatically, Nova will be just like all the other schools and will lose the thing that makes it special. I think that the students from Davie Elementary should just go to another good school like Driftwood, and give others that are more in need, a chance to get educated. It would not be fair to other students who live farther away and are willing to come all the way to Nova. This is why I greatly disagree with this boundary proposal.
69.   Esther Mizell at 05:50 AM on 10/16/2015
Good Morning All! Truly, we understand your complaint concerning busing. Please understand Nova is the only K-12 in the Broward County District, that buses STUDENTS from as far NORTH,WEST,SOUTH,& EAST as the district is zoned. Nova has a cap, application,& lottery Submission Policy. Therefore, Nova excepts Student from Davie as well. When the window opens, please go on-line and Register your students. Thank You!
70.   Bianka Harris at 08:33 AM on 10/16/2015
As one of the students that did not attend a Nova Elementary School I do not support this proposal. The past proposal stated that Davie elementary was going to take half of Nova Middle's population which isn't that different from this proposal. Both proposals limit the diversity of Nova. Nova is not a neighborhood school, this proposal will make Nova seem like one. The
Nova Zone was established for all Broward County residents to create a community of schools. Why stop something that consistently performs well. Supporters of this proposal argue that since they pay tax dollars in the city of Davie and that they should have the option to send their child to Nova. This argument does not support the passing of this proposal. All Broward County residents pay taxes and they do not get to select their Broward County school, especially magnet or lottery school. When parents moved or rented a house in Davie they knew what school they were zoned to attend. If the kids from Davie Elementary all enroll at Nova Middle then Driftwood which is already under-enrolled will become more under-enrolled. This proposal completely alters the very foundation of Nova and the Nova Zone, please don't change the already built in foundation. Nova is a school that is meant to be shared with everyone.
71.   Bonnie Stevenson at 08:59 AM on 10/16/2015
As a resident of Pembroke Pines and a parent of 2 daughters who won the lottery in kindergarten and are now in 10th & 12th grade I respectfully ask for you to read submission #13 written by Mrs. Dara Collins then read it again and read it a third time to understand the consequences of passing this proposal
72.   Jeremy Callaway at 09:07 AM on 10/16/2015
I believe this proposal is bad because the fundamental reason Nova Middle is special is because of diversity. Allowing students in just because they live near the area would be wrong. Every student who never went to any of the Nova elementary schools should be given the same chance at Nova Middle, not because of the area they live in. Nova Middle was never a neighborhood school, and should never be FORCED into becoming one.Diversity has played a very important part in Nova Middle's academic success. Quality education is not based on where you live, it is based on your academic motivation. Just because you went to Davie Elementary does not mean that you really WANT to get into Nova Middle, then we are just wasting seats that could go to more appreciative students. Letting Davie students into Nova Middle would be a gross misuse of the location of our school, and Nova would not be special anymore. We will not tolerate it.
73.   Karson Vannatta at 09:47 AM on 10/16/2015
I believe this proposal is even worse than the one from last year. This proposal show that they want students from Davie Elementary to be directly enrolled into Nova Middle school and since they are in Nova Middle then they go to Nova High. And since the Davie Elementary kids are going to be enrolled to Nova then that doesn't give the non-Nova students a chance to get in. Also, not all of the Davie Elementary students will get into Nova so they are leaving out innocent children that might even live closer than other students. There is nothing wrong with Driftwood Middle and I believe this is ridiculous.
74.   Karson Vannatta at 10:02 AM on 10/16/2015
This boundry proposal is so ridiculous. They want Davie Elementary students to be directly enrolled into Nova and take up spots for Non-Nova students and also not all of the Davie Elementary students will be enrolled even if they life closer than other students. This boundry proposal is wanting to just take up spots from other Nova students. And this will take the uniqueness from Nova and the lottery. Driftwood Middle is a good school and there is nothing wrong with is. Buses provide transportation for students that live far away so there is not a reason for them not to go to to school on time. This is not a matter of how far away a student lives because is they are zoned then a bus will come and pick them up. There are many flaws in this proposal that should be addressed amd that this is not the greatest of offers. Not all students would get into nova so there is no point for letting these kids in if not all of them get into the school. This school is unique from the others and should not be messed up with Davie Elementary students. This school should always stay the same and this whole proposal should be denied just like the one given to us last year. This should be dropped and never be brought up again.
75.   Michelle Puentes at 11:25 AM on 10/16/2015
I reject this boundary proposal because it is not fair.Nova Middle School has been a lottery system school for many years and if Davie Elemenetary parents want their students to be a part of Nova, they must enter the lottery system like everyone else. This proposal will minimize the chances of people needing their children to enter Nova Middle that are not from Davie Elementary. This really only benefits the Davie Elementary students and decreases the chance for people around to have a better education. Please do not accept this unnecessary proposal.
76.   Meenakshi Suresh at 12:58 PM on 10/16/2015
This is should be allowed to show their greediness of this advantage of the lottery system. DAVIe elementary should not be able to do this request because of the way that other schools need to go through and do. Many students try their best and come to do this lottery system, but now it's like DAVIE elementary has a free ride through this lottery system. Not his is not fair in my opinion.

77.   Michelle Reilly at 04:23 PM on 10/16/2015
I respectfully request that Proposal C1 be rejected. Nova Middle School is not a Davie school nor is it a school whose enrollment is driven by boundaries. This is a Broward county school and every child living in the county should have the same chance in attending. Most children do not attend a middle school which is in walking distance from their home. If Davie residents believe their town is lacking appropriate middle school options then they should address their concerns with the city of Davie and ask the city to assist in determining if an additional middle school is needed. The proposal undermines the intent of the Nova schools to be representative of the entire county by lottery and unfairly favors one zip code. Merely living near Nova and being zoned for Davie Elementary doesn't give preferential treatment.
78.   Julia Flora at 06:09 PM on 10/16/2015
I am currently a student at Nova Middle and I believe this boundary proposal should be denied once more. One of the many great things about Nova is the fact that it is open to everyone in Broward County. If this proposal were to be accepted and put into effect, then many of the students that wish to go to this amazing school and receive an amazing, quality education will not be able to. Although I understand that it must be frustrating for many parents to live a few minutes from Nova Middle and have to drive their children to a school much further away. Also, Nova is an amazing, high quality school. But we need to keep things fair for everyone in the county. If this proposal had been accepted many years ago, I would not know all the amazing people that I know now. Ultimately, Davie Elementary is not a Nova school and should be treated as such. The students should have to enter the lottery like every other students in Broward County, besides the Nova students of course.
79.   Kaiya Holley at 06:38 PM on 10/16/2015
As a student at Nova Middle School I strongly disagree with this boundary proposal being passed. Nova Middle has a great diversity and with Davie Elementary kids automatically being able to go to Nova Middle is unacceptable. Davie Elementary kids should enter the raffle like everyone else because it’s not fair to the students who are participating in the raffle with Davie elementary taking up spots. There would only be 25% of the students attending Nova that could be coming from all over different parts of the world. Nova would be a neighborhood school like many other schools losing its diversity and uniqueness. Also, would no longer be special anymore and a school every student would like to go to. Davie elementary students can go to Drift Wood Middle that would not take long to get there at all. It’s ridiculous how Davie Elementary are taking valuable spots from a student who's education is limited or just not up to its expected standard. Give the spot to a child who comes from an environment where they don't learn and turn them into a genius.
80.   Alison Garland at 06:41 PM on 10/16/2015
As a current student at Nova Middle School, I know this bill would wreak havoc throughout our system. Just because potential students live closer to the school does not mean they should be favored over the other students whose parents work hard to get their children in the lottery. I personally feel one of the best traits Nova has is the schools diversity. Kids from all over Broward County study at Nova Middle and High, and by stopping that flow the Nova Schools would lose their uniqueness. Saying that because you live closer to the school so you should be prioritized is like saying that everyone likes a certain type of pizza, but you like it more and you are sitting closer to it so you should eat it first. I understand the fact that bus expenses and having children closer to their parents would be a great benefit, but it does not benefit the county as a whole, and so to say, keeping the pizza for only a few people and not sharing the pie when you know you could is selfish. Please rethink what you are about to do and realize that there are more children then those in Davie Elementary who deserve the great programs offered at Nova Middle and Nova High School. Thank you.
81.   Meenakshi Suresh at 07:59 PM on 10/16/2015
I am a current Nova Middle student, in eighth grade. I am understanding the fact of Davie Elementary's request, but I do not believe that it makes Davie Elementary anymore special than any of the other students coming from any other school. Many kids are now working hard and getting selected every year of the lottery system. But that's because Nova Middle is the best school and a better school than the other schools in the boundary. They are requesting 25% of their kids into our school? This is literally saying, "OH WAIT HERE WE HAVE A FREE RIDE!" No this is not fair! Me, as a new to Nova Middle student tried my best to get to Nova and i finally got in at 6th grade. This request should not be granted.
82.   Makenzie Ryan at 09:32 PM on 10/16/2015
I disagree with the boundary proposal for the upcoming school year (2016- 2017) for many reasons. First, the most important thing, is the effect it would have on Nova Middle school. Nova Middle School and other Nova zone schools are not only known for their education, but also for their diversity. This is one quality that makes Nova zone school unique from others. If we allow 25% of the remaining 50% of non- nova students come solely from Davie Elementary, then if you were to live in Tamarac and you would like to go to Nova Middle School, then your chances of getting in are even smaller. This will then make our diversity and uniqueness qualities go down. Next, some people may say that if we allow 25% of the 6th grade population at Nova Middle School to come from Davie Elementary that it may help cut down on the cost of transportation for buses due to students living a great distance away from Nova Middle. But, I say that it is worth the few extra dollars it may cost to transport a child that may live in Sunrise come to Nova Middle which could be part of the foundation of a great career for an aspiring young mind. In conclusion, I disagree with the 2016- 2017 boundary proposal because it will deprive Nova Middle's diversity and is unfair to children who may live in another town/ city like Pembroke Pines.
83.   Taylor Flprence at 12:37 PM on 10/17/2015
I am denying the 2016-17 Boundary Proposal C1. Nova is a really special school where kids from all over the county come in. Teachers get to see all of these different ways students learn. But if the Davie elementary school gets automatically put into he system that would defeat the whole purpose. Th would be less children to come in from other schools. So its just plain unfair they should be put in the lottery to be put in the Nova System just as other kids from Broward County do.
84.   Juana Florez at 12:39 PM on 10/17/2015
I am student at Nova Middle School and I was a student at Nova Elementary since kindergarten. I am against this proposal because I believe all the kids should have a fair chance of getting in the school not depending on where you live. Nova being a lottery school offers this. I got in the Nova Middle because I came from the elementary but I still had to go in the lottery to get in the elementary. If this proposal passes then less kids from different placed will be able to get accepted into the school. The right thing to do is enter the lottery that all the kids parents/guardians have had to do at one point or another may it be when getting into the elementary or the middle school. Nova middle has a lot a things to offer and special programs and everyone she have the same chance of getting in the school.I believe this proposal should not be passed and Nova Middle should stay being a lottery school where everyone has an equal chance of getting in.
85.   Tharlene Pou at 03:59 PM on 10/17/2015
I do NOT support this proposal; because, Nova is known for having kids from all around South Florida through a lottery draw. If we let the 5th graders from Davie Elementary come to Nova Middle, the School would be over crowded causing the education level to drop. Kids coming from Davie Elementary or only about 25% of our kids would be from other schools. Our school would not be known as a unique school and we will then be known for a regular Public School. Kids from Davie Elementary should have to apply to go to Nova to continue it's good standards (Grade A School) and to be fare for those who would also like to attend Nova for the same reasons. If you did NOT attend any of the Nova Elementary schools, you shouldn't be accepted to Nova Middle School unless it's through the Lottery Draw. The rule should remain the same for admission by continuing the lottery to enter any Nova Schools. Kids from Davie Elementary should NOT automatically be put into this school just because it is close to where they live. Nova middle is only about 10 minuets away from Drift Wood Middle School and School Buses are available. I myself have to take a school Bus every morning and afternoon, therefore, other children can ride the bus as well.
86.   Khaliyah Maraj at 04:07 PM on 10/17/2015
My name is Khaliyah Maraj and I attend Nova Middle School. I don't think it's right to allow students from different schools other than Nova Eisenhower and Blanche to attend, otherwise they win the lottery system. I don't like the idea of taking away the point Nova stands for, in other words, how unique our school is. Nova schools would not be considered special and better than most schools in Florida. I believe that this program should not take place to ruin Nova's remarkable policies. What i do not understand is why leave alone the transition for Davie elementary 5th graders to Driftwood middle. Students still have an opportunity to attend a school in Davie, even though it mat require a longer walking period, but then again parents can drop their children off to school.
87.   Megan Giberson at 05:42 PM on 10/17/2015
My name in Megan and I attend Nova Middle School. I am currently in the 8th grade. I believe that this proposal should be denied once again because if this is passed, it will ruin the true meaning behind the way this wonderful school chooses its students. Nova uses a lottery system so children from all over South Florida have a chance to attend this school. If this proposal is passes, you are taking this away from the school. If we begin to let Davie Elementary kids just walk into Nova without having to go by the lottery system, then Nova will soon become just like a regular neighborhood school. Please reconsider this proposal, because if this is passed, then the true reasoning behind how we choose our students will be gone. Thank you!
88.   Zachary Blum at 11:13 AM on 10/18/2015
Nova middle school is NOT a neighborhood school I repeat… NOT. This school buses kids all over the county and as a result they have a wide variety of kids. I am an 8th grader at Nova and by allowing a fourth of the new sixth graders to come from the same city defeats the purpose that Nova is not a neighborhood school. Nova is special because of its diversity, we have kids from all over the county and our racial makeup allows people to experience many cultures and ethnics. By allowing this proposal, half the kids from around the county that are not from Nova are now gone. Half of what makes us special is now gone. This proposal also is able to reduce the racial diversity of our school which is bad, we need kids to experience as much diversity possible. If this plan succeeds, you're taking away half the kids that wait and try to get into Nova instead of just getting in because they live near the school. It may be fine and dandy to send your kids there, but what about the people who have to wait to get in, you're skipping the line and that's not fair. Every child should have the opportunity to be able to get a great education and everyone should agree, but then why do you take away that opportunity from half of the kids trying to enter Nova so that Davie kids have the "opportunity".Everyone has an opportunity and it is the lottery, don't skip the line and claim "convenience", enter the lottery and have the same opportunity as everyone else . Overall this proposal is bad and would take away why Nova is special and could change the diversity as well as remove opportunity from kids trying to enter through the lottery.
89.   Tariq Lajoie at 11:44 AM on 10/18/2015
Being a student at nova middle I do not support the boundary proposal at all. This is because it makes the chances of getting a quality education at Nova that much harder for kids throughout Broward. Having been entered in to the lottery me by my mother who has done everything she could to make sure I could get a very good education may not have succeed if this proposal was accepted a year or two ago. If this boundary proposal is accepted this would make it all the more harder for other people's children from all over Broward to get a good education because that 50% of 6th grade sets Davie elementary is trying to take away from kids all over the county almost ruins any chance of them getting in to Nova middle. Plus on top of that it takes away from what makes nova special in diversity because instead of having an ample amount of children from all over the county, the boundary proposal makes Nova no more than an average neighborhood school.
90.   Khaliyah Maraj at 12:58 PM on 10/18/2015
My name is Khaliyah Maraj, and I completely reject this boundary proposal decision because, it is unfair. Nova schools has had a lottery system for many years. Why ruin the purpose of Nova, just because Davie elementary students are across the street? I mean i understand that it must be closer walking distance for some kids, but that will just mess up the diversity in the schools. Nova is a unique and diverse school that is hard to get into. It's fair for the lottery system program to stay within Nova. And it is completely fair that Nova Eisenhower and Blanche students get to file into Nova Middle and High school automatically. What i don't understand is why can't the Davie 5th graders just file for Driftwood Middle, I understand that they think Nova is a great school, but it's just unfair for other kids who already applied in the lottery system in Nova to get the chance to win a spot in a Nova school.
91.   Veronica Hancock at 01:26 PM on 10/18/2015
I am a student at Nova Middle and I do not think that students from Davie Elementary should just be allowed to get into nova. My parents entered the lottery just like all the other students at Nova who were thankful to get in. If Davie Elementary's students were just allowed in the school, then this would throw off the whole lottery program. The lottery program is one of the things that makes Nova so unique and special. Many parents of those who go to Davie Elementary say that they want their child to get in because it is right across the street from their current school. I do not think they realize that Nova is not a neighborhood school. It would be unfair for their child to get in when many other children and parents have patiently waited to get in themselves. I have friends who have tried over and over again to get into Nova. If Davie Elementary's students just came in, maybe my friends, who have tried many times might get pushed back again. Therefore, I believe that the kids at Davie Elementay should enter the lottery and cross their fingers just like all the other families trying to get into Nova.

I believe this boundary proposal should not be accepted. The reason for this is that the thing that makes Nova Middle School unique is its diversity. If this goes through, the school will become less diverse and will never be the same.It will not be fair to make the children who go to Davie Elementary a higher priority than others. Every one should have to wait their turn or else it will not be fair to the other students/parents who are also trying to get accepted to Nova Middle School. If I had a child that went to Davie Elementary, of course I would want them to get accepted into the school before the other children but that just wouldn't be fair! In order to keep the "lottery" of Nova fair and open to everyone this proposal must not be accepted. This has been going on for many years and has never been accepted for good reason. In conclusion, I believe this boundary proposal is unfair and should not be accepted.
93.   Ian Elmowitz at 02:33 PM on 10/18/2015
My name is Ian Elmowitz and I have been in the Nova program since Kindergarten. I am currently in eighth grade. I am rejecting this proposal because it would not be fair to reject other students because of some that were not even supposed to be "required" to go there. Allowing kids from Davie Elementary to have preference over all others would not be a good thing. This is because everyone should have an equal chance to be admitted into Nova Middle School. This would force other kids to move to the school in their boundary. So why is Davie Elementary different? The reason why the Davie Elementary parents are so keen on this proposal is because it is easy. But when was easy better? Allowing kids from all over Broward County to experience Nova Middle would benefit not only kids in Davie, but even all over Florida. Thank you.

I am a student of Nova Middle School. I have been at Nova since kindergarten and now in 8th grade. I had to be eligible to go to a Nova Elementary to go to Nova Middle. Nova is an amazing school with amazing students. We had many changes to the school like a courtroom and new curriculums added just in the past couple years. This is due to the fact students tried their best to get into our schools. We aren't a home school so making it a priority to allow kids fro the non-Nova elementary school just across the street may just change what type of school we are. Kids had to be in a Nova elementary school in order to move on to the Nova middle school automatically. Our school is very diverse with kids presenting their many talents. We have children who come from all over the county to get a great education, so just because it's across from the street from Davie Elementary, does not mean those students should have a free pass into our school. They need to be entered into the lottery just like everyone else. Nova has high standards than most middle schools. We can't just let any kid in just because it's a closer distance from their elementary school. Yes you may have to travel a short distance by going to Nova from Davie elem. but you will lessen Nova's uniqueness. If you think your child should be in the school, then enter the lottery. I'm trying to see things from your perspective, and seeing is that you may not know someone in Nova, please try to see it in ours. Good Luck!

I believe that this boundary proposal should be rejected. As a Nova student since kindergarten, I know that being at any Nova school is a privilege. Nova in my opinion, is the most unique school in Broward County. Our school is known for its diversity and high academic levels. Many parents dream for their child to be enrolled into Nova Schools. So, for Davie Elementary students to automatically be able to come to Nova is not a good idea. Our school will loose its uniqueness. I understand that its right across the street but we are not a neighborhood school. This will also lessen the opportunity of kids from other areas who participated in the lottery to have a chance to come to Nova. It is really unfair for the lottery system to be for everyone except the students at Davie Elementary. It should not be easy for Davie Elementary students to get into Nova and hard for other people in other parts of Broward County to get into Nova. It should be equal in this process. If you want to be in this amazing school then do the same thing that everyone else is doing. Nova is a great school and i would hate to see that ruined with the Boundary proposal being accepted.
96.   Kelsey Isnady at 05:32 PM on 10/18/2015
As a current student of Nova Middle School I find the boundary proposal to be unfair. It makes no sense to have 25% of our school to be for just Davie students even though we are not a neighborhood school just because going to a school a few miles away is an inconvenience for them. There are many problems with this proposal. If it were approved it would make Nova lose their diversity which is why we are such a successful school. An would ruin the purpose of us having a lottery which is to insure that geography does not play a role in our students. Lastly, it would make Nova into a neighborhood school making so many students from other schools getting less of an opportunity to attend our great school. This is why I believe that Davie students should not receive 25% spot in Nova. They should just enter our lottery like everyone else does.
97.   Kenneth Pereira at 07:14 PM on 10/18/2015
I believe that the new boundary proposal submitted by Davie Elementary should be rejected. If the school gets to be in the school automatically, then other schools would be allowed to do that, making the school bigger and more money would have to be invested due to the big amount of children. Also, it doesn't seem fair that one school could only go straight to Nova and let the people in the lottery have to wait. I thank you for your time for reading this comment on this boundary proposal.
98.   Ariella Ciuraru at 08:18 PM on 10/18/2015
For many years, Nova Middle has been a lottery school. It is an excellent school and so many students are on the waiting list and wish to come here. Nova is very special because it contains students from all across South Florida. If Nova was a neighborhood school, some of the diversity would be lost. Many students hopes and dreams are to become very smart and educated people, who want to achieve great things. Nova provides students with such an opportunity. If the lottery system was changed the way it has been proposed, it would mean that kids from other school districts, where the schools are not that strong would have less of a chance to get into Nova which I am against. What has made Nova such a special school is the current lottery system it has and if we change that we may risk losing the quality of the education provided.
99.   Nada Saleh at 08:31 PM on 10/18/2015
I am not supporting this program. I am not supporting this program because the kids should have the opportunity to go to any school they want. Students shouldn't be forced to go to a school that they don't want. If a student wants to go to Nova, and they are not around the school, they should still have the opportunity to go to a school they want, not to be forced to go to a school, they don't like. That is why I'm not supporting this program.
100.   Charlize Barrows at 11:47 PM on 10/18/2015
I think that the boundary proposal should not be rejected but changed in a way that not as big a percentage should be as easily allowed into Nova Middle School as the boundary proposal suggests, but I do believe that students from Davie elementary should have a little bit of a higher chance to get into Nova middle school since it is their neighborhood school. I also believe that students not from Nova Blanche and Eisenhower should have a fair lottery between the other children in Broward County. Lastly, I believe that this boundary proposal should be rejected because it is not fair to the other children all over broward county who have to enter the lottery and have a smaller percentage to be picked to be in Nova middle school while Davie Elementary is not a Nova School. Nova Middle school is not meant to be a homeschool and should remain that way.
101.   Kayla Blum at 09:17 AM on 10/19/2015
I am an 8th grade student at Nova Middle school. Each year this boundary proposal is tried again and again and fails. If this proposal is passed the diversity of Nova Middle school will be demolished by the overwhelming population of white minorities at Davie Elemtary. This school should not be made into a neighborhood school. If this proposal passes, everything in Nova will change and not for the better. This proposal should not pass because less and less people from other school will come from all around the county. These students make Nova who it is and Nova is not a neighborhood school. Nova Middle should keep its ways of the lottery system because that is a fair way of the students getting Nova. Nova is not a neighborhood school, and what is not broken should not be fixed and everyone in Nova and the parents of Nova students can all agree Nova is not broken. There is no need for this prososal to be passed. For all the Davie Elementary students to get into Nova, they should try to be accepted just like everyone else. I am not in support of this boundary proposal.
102.   Michele McClelland at 02:41 PM on 10/19/2015
It is ridiculous that parents need to cart their children 5 miles away when there is a school right across the street that could accommodate them. It is a waste of money for the district to pay for buses when in reality the kids could walk to school saving thousands of dollars in taxpayer money each year.
103.   Deeann Limage at 06:08 PM on 10/19/2015
I think about this proposal is that this is just horrible idea because Nova is a special school and people from other place can be placed here but not be in if they let 50% Davie elementary kids in the Nova Middle it won't be a special school anymore it just be a normal school that everyone goes and we don't want that we want to be a school that everyone around he world goes to.
104.   Anika Allen at 06:20 PM on 10/19/2015
I am strongly opposed to this proposal. By allowing children from Davie Elementary to be exempted from the lottery system, we are transforming Nova Middle into a neighborhood school. As a student at Nova Middle, I believe that Nova is truly a special school. Nova is supposed to represent the entire county, not only the area near to the school. Davie Elementary is a mainly white school, and Nova has mainly minorities, as we represent the county. Allowing Davie Elementary students in without going through the lottery will cause Nova to lose its demographic representation of the county. Proposal C1 turns Nova from the special place that it is into a neighborhood school. I ask that you please reject Proposal C1.
105.   Felicia Olajide at 06:57 PM on 10/19/2015
I am a student at Nova Middle School and I don't support this boundary proposal because it can affect the students like me who were accepted to Nova Middle. I understand the reasoning of those who support this proposal, who are mostly parents that have a child who has to attend a school farther away from there home. But, they have to think about the parents and children who have been waiting years to get accepted to Nova and bow you are jeopardizing their spot because your more concerned about your child having to go to a school a little farther away from there home while, some kids accepted to Nova didn't want to go to their home school because of how bad or horrible it is.
106.   Jayden Davis at 07:00 PM on 10/19/2015
I think Davie Elemetary students should not be allowed to get into Nova Middle School automatically. If you want your student to get into Nova Middle you should attempt the same way all the other students got into Nova Middle. I understand it is convenient for the students to go to Nova Middle, but it doesn't mean they can get a "free ride" to go Nova Middle. I did not go to a Nova school for elementary. I got into the middle school the same way everyone else did that didn't go to a Nova school. If this proposal happens, this can affect the enrollment of Nova Middle and Driftwood Middle. It can affect Nova Middle by increasing the number of students in each class. It can affect Driftwood Middle by decreasing the amount of students in each class. Every student should get into Nova Middle School the same way every other student that goes there does
107.   Elijah Martin at 07:01 PM on 10/19/2015
I am a student at Nova Middle School. I did not go to one of the Nova Elementary Schools. I had to get in by entering in the lottery system like everyone else who didn't go to one of the elementary schools. it isn't fair for them to get in just because they go to Davie Elementary.
108.   Carol Teran at 07:09 PM on 10/19/2015
I do not think that opening a large amount of the school to Davie elementary kids is a good idea. I believe this because the whole point of Nova Middle is for it to be a lottery school and let kids from all over the county get the best education possible and everyone having a fair shot at getting it. By accepting this proposal you are slowly going to start making Nova Middle a regular neighborhood school and that totally defeats of Nova middle and why it was opened.
109.   Luidzy Gabriel at 07:38 PM on 10/19/2015
Hello, my name is Luidzy Gabriel and I attend Nova Middle school. Even though this year is my last year in the middle school the boundary proposal still concerns me. The school is made up of 50% Nova Eisenhower and Nova Blanche and 50% of the lottery students. If Nova middle school started accepting students from Davie elementary then nova would be considered a public school. If we do nothing and Nova turned into a public school and then the county will take advantage of us and turn nova into a home school. This is why we should stop the county from letting Davie students attending nova without entering the lottery.
110.   Stephanie Denis at 08:41 PM on 10/19/2015
I am a student at Nova Middle school, and I can tell you that it would be a shame to make Nova just an ordinary neighborhood school. This is a great school with lots of advantages. To begin with Nova Middle School has been a straight "A" school for years, the academic success here is outstanding. Unlike other middle school Nova has many electives that are beneficial for kids. For example we here at Nova Middle School have high school classes for students who want to start their high school transcript. A couple of those classes we have here are law studies, Spanish 1&2, Spanish 1&2 for native speakers, Alegebra 1, business/economy, etc. The teachers here really focus on students education, and participation in class. Our faculty always make sure we know what the objective is in class and make us participate in class projects that help kids understand what they are learning in class. I myself have been at Nova since kindergarden which makes me believe that I am lucky to have this opportunity, and I think that other people should enjoy the liberty of having a great school to go to. I know people that want to come and be a student at Nova, but haven't had the luck to get in.I have three high school classes and I'm only in 8th grade. I have already been accumulating credits since 7th grade. So once I getting high school I do t have to take the foreign language requirement since I will have already taken two years of Spanish for native speakers. In my opinion Nova Middle School does not deserve the tittle of a neighborhood school, but of one of the best schools in the county of broward. Don't you?
111.   Brandon Hertzendorf at 08:42 PM on 10/19/2015
I do not support Davie Elementary Kids being allowed to prance through the Nova School System because it is not fair for people that are not Davie Elementary students by having a less of a chance to come to our wonderful school. In elementary school, I went to Stirling Elementary in Hollywood. There, I tried to go in since First Grade, where I finally was picked in Sixth Grade. If Davie Elementary were allowed to go into Nova Middle school without the lottery, the people requesting from throughout Broward County would drop 25%. This means one-fourth of Nova Middle school will be from Davie Elementary and makes Nova Middle a neighborhood school, not a lottery school. Yes, if I went to Davie Elementary I would like this, but over 50% of the school are happy sixth-graders who came from the lottery. If I were you, I would try to get into the lottery and hopefully get into Nova Middle, not produce a Boundary Proposal reducing other children to go to Nova Middle. 163
112.   Milan Pierre-Jerome at 10:05 PM on 10/19/2015
I strongly do not support this proposal in which changing Nova schools into neighborhood schools and having these boundaries in Davie have an impact on Nova Schools. As a honors student who has learned at Nova Middle School and who has been an old-time student of Nova Eisenhower Elementary, I have been through the Nova Zone all of my life as a student and so has my brother. I would like to go to Nova High School next year because my whole experience in the Nova Zone system has been great and I have learned so much from the teachers and all of these experiences as a student. This proposal isn't reasonable because people are getting a great education in the Nova System including myself. Since I do not live in Davie so I would be forced to leave an amazing learning environment, would you want this to happen to you? We should not have these experiences become taken away from children who would have to eventually start over at a new school because they do not live in Davie in reasoning of this proposal. Living around the Nova System should not be a reason to why children should be allowed to get into Nova without going through a lottery. Every student should have the same chance when applying for Nova no matter where they live. If this change took place it would change and affect not only The Nova Zone system but the whole of Broward County because there would be less enrollment in other neighborhood schools. Lastly, this proposal should definitely become rejected because the Nova System is a powerful and effective system, so now why would you risk to change success?
113.   Sonthonax Jean-Baptiste at 10:13 PM on 10/19/2015
I believe that at we all try to have a fairness between everything from slicing a piece of cake between ten people . In this case I believe that by allowing allowing Davie elementary to get 50% is just not fair. I understand exactly why they are thinking of allowing Davie to have 50%. You see since Davie elementary is close to Nova, they want leaving 5th graders to go to Nova. And I have noticed to Parents of Davie elementary kids and the leaving 5th graders would probably say yes to allowing Davie kids to have 50 % of a chance to go to Nova Middle, but if you see for other elementary schools, they have a lot less percentage than Davie or Nova middle. If the total amount of 5th graders going to Nova Middle , it should Nova elementary 50%, others 25%, and Davie 25%, It's equal.
114.   Jayla Harris at 10:31 PM on 10/19/2015
I am against the proposal that fifth grade Davie Elementary students should get fifty percent of the seats in Nova Middle School. Nova has always treated everyone equally and has given everyone the same opertunities to get into Nova. If we change that, Nova woul'nt be Nova anymore. Nova has always been a lottery school, and it works well for them, so I don't see the need to change that.(Honestly, parents of Davie Elementary, stop complaining. Not everything is about you! That's all.)

We leave next to school and my child needs to take the bus insted of walk to school just beacuse we didn't go through nova.

Our students and their families should have a local middle and high school like all other students. It would save the district money to allow them to attend the schools in the community in which they live. Please consider what is best for our students.

Kid at Davie Elementary deserve the right to have preference to go to Nova Middle.
119.   Serena Doyle at 08:44 AM on 10/20/2015
I believe that Davie kids should not be able to just get into Nova without entering the lottery system. If kids from different schools have to enter the lottery system, then children from Davie Elementary should have to as well. Regardless of the fact that Nova is in Davie, plenty of children go to schools far from their home. I believe that if everyone else has to enter the lottery then it isn't fair for children who go to Davie Elementary to just go to Nova without any requirements.
120.   Ashley Illescas at 09:46 AM on 10/20/2015
I believe that there should not be a boundary proposal should not be made.Nova is a very special place that is not a public school. Letting children from Davie Elementary come to Nova stops it from being one of the most special school.`
121.   Cherish Smith at 11:03 AM on 10/20/2015
I oppose the proposal C1. The Nova system is a lottery system that we had to enter for Elementary School. No preferential treatment is available at the entrance to Kindergarten. Opportunities to re-enter the lottery is greatest at Middle and High School than mid-grade levels. It is what makes Nova special and unique. It is not intended to become a neighborhood school and will once this is passed. What is to stop people from moving into the rental communities surrounding it in order to access Nova Middle. The blend of Broward county communities will be diminished, which is not the intention of the Nova program. Yes, I have forgone my neighborhood school such that my children can have the unique opportunity that they have been given to attend Nova and am grateful.
122.   Mayor Judy Paul at 11:04 AM on 10/20/2015
I have a long standing commitment to bring Davie Elementary students into their neighborhood schools in the Nova complex. Not only does it keep Davie students/residents in their neighborhood, but it saves the district much needed dollars by reducing the busing costs. All students will be able to bike or walk to school as they do at Davie Elementary. By staying in the town where they live, students will be able to maintain a sense of community and realize the value of their contributions and volunteerism to their hometown charities and events. It is a matter of common sense, saving money, and doing what is right for the residents of east Davie. Davie Elementary has a long history and was in existance long before Nova was created. It is a fair and equitable solution to the needs expressed by the parents of Davie Elementary students. As I understand, the curriculum at Nova is the same as all schools in the system and it is no longer an experimental school. The protectionists need to be understanding of the needs of all students and welcome this small group into their circle.
123.   Laila Nelson at 07:31 PM on 10/20/2015
As a student of Nova Middle, I do not support this proposal. Many kids like myself were put into the lottery, waited 2,3,4, or 5 years, and fortunately were picked to be in the school. Nova Middle isn't just some school you can decide you want to go to, and then miraculously you end up there. Many kids including myself have waited to get into Nova Middle whether we lived close to the school or not. We had to wait and so should everybody else. It does not matter if you live across the street, around the corner, wherever! People have their children's names on lists and have been waiting for the opportunity to get into the school and this opportunity shouldn't just be granted to someone because they live nearby. Just because Davie Elementary is right across the street doesn't mean they should get special treatment. To get into Nova Middle you have to put yourself into the lottery, and you wait. No shortcuts, no VIP, no special access. It's that simple.
124.   Andres Lopez at 08:20 PM on 10/20/2015
I am currently a student at Nova Middle and I had to wait on the lost to get into Nova Eisenhower. It would defeat the pure purpose of a lottery school if some kids could get in without going through the rest of the steps that everyone else has to go through. It would make Nova Middle just like every other neighborhood school if kids could just get in because the go to a school where they have a secured spot. Nova Middle is diverse on the fact that kids from all over the county have an equal chance of getting in. Like I said, Nova Schools are LOTTERY schools and that's what makes us different. Just because you live across the street does not mean that you can evade the lottery part of the process of getting in to Nova. that would not make it fair to kids trying to get in from other schools from across the county because then they would have less chances of getting in because there would be less spots. Nova is like a sacred cove, and I want to keep it that way. The kids at Davie Elementary should wait in line like the rest of the kids and wait for their name to be called. I don't want Nova to be like another neighborhood school in Broward County. Wait in line like me, that's how the system works. Why change the system when the system has been working perfectly since the Nova Zone opened. Imagine if you are a kid, waiting in line for the past 5 years, trying to get into Nova. Then, this ridiculous boundary proposal gets ratified. Now kids that live closer to the school are getting in when the school works through lottery. It would take away seats from kids that have been waiting for years to get into Nova. Nova is a lottery school, and that is wait makes it special.
125.   Gabrielle Cooke at 10:04 PM on 10/20/2015
I tend to disagree with this new boundary proposal due to the fact that doing so would make Nova more of an everyday neighborhood school. It would not be fair if Davie Elementary kids got to take up 50% of all the seats available for people who wait their turn and join the lottery. Further more, if Davie Elementary students automatically got into the Nova system, who would be there to fill up the seats at Driftwood Middle School? Their seats would be way too vacant. Attending Nova schools is by chance and randomization- no one should be able to cut in line, no matter how close you are to the school.
126.   Cathy Cancellare at 10:39 PM on 10/20/2015
I strongly agree that all Davie Elementary School 5th grade students should have the opportunity to attend Nova Middle School.
127.   Sabina Kriner at 06:20 AM on 10/21/2015
Davie families should have a local middle and high school like all other students. This would save the district money to allow them to attend the schools in the community in which they live. This will allow the community to be more united and the students would be able to walk to their middle and high school! :)

I am a product of the Nova system and I do not agree with the boundary proposal for Nova Schools. As a student I enjoyed experience of having classes with students that lived through Broward County that were different then the people that I saw everyday in my neighbor. I learned at a young age how to deal with cultural and ethical differences. I have 2 children of my own, one in 4th grade and one in 8th grade. We live in the same neighbor that I grew up in and I see the difference in their education experience. For that reason I complete the Nova application for them faithfully every year. I believe that Nova should remain the way it is with equal opportunity for students throughout the County to attend this wonder school.
132.   Daniela Gonzalez at 05:54 PM on 10/21/2015
I do not support this idea because other kids had to go through the struggle of getting there ticket picked or not. The kids who have not been chosen to go to nova is not fare to them that other kids are getting in with no doubt.
133.   Briyah Brooks at 08:02 PM on 10/21/2015
I think that this boundary proposal is not a good nor smart idea because if we let students who have attended Davie elementary school take up half of the space of nova, Nova Middle School and High will not be a school of diversity, but it would be a regular community school for the city of Davie. I think that this boundary proposal would not be effective because even though Davie Elementary school is right across the street and walking distance to Nova High and Middle, bringing students that are already attend a school in Davie it would take away the uniqueness from the schools. Nova has traditionally been a magnet school for a number of years, taking this away from the schools would make likely make students want to come to Nova.I also think that Davie should have their own middle school just like they have their own elementary school. It only makes sense for students who went to Davie elementary go to Davie middle or high, just like it makes sense that students that have attended Nova Eisenhower or Nova Blanche to go to Nova middle school or Nova high school. I also think that it would not be fair to parents who have been trying to get their child enrolled into Nova, that Davie elementary students have automatic seats.
134.   Destiny Rosulme at 09:18 PM on 10/21/2015
In the case of allowing matriculating 5th graders at Davie Elementary or living in the Davie Elementary area to be given priority of 50% of the 6th grade spots at Nova Middle, I believe that notion is completely unfair and strays away from Nova Middle's uniqueness from other schools in Broward County. Both Nova Blanche and Nova Eisenhower use Nova Middle as their "home" middle school meaning that every year, the matriculating 5th graders at both of these elementaries go to Nova Middle if they don't decide to go to another school. If you include those students and possibly the Davie Elementary kids, you'll find that Nova Middle will be primarily a local home school which is not what Nova is about. Nova schools bring intelligent pupils from all over Broward County together. Allowing Davie Elementary kids to go to Nova will decrease the amount of students from other areas of Broward County. Doing so will also take away some of Nova's uniqueness making it less appealing and more average. Please don't take the Nova out of Nova Middle School.
135.   Jessica Giberson at 09:38 PM on 10/21/2015
I am currently a Nova student and i disagree with this proposal. I disagree because i think Nova was made this way for a reason, and it should stay that way. I get where everyone is coming from, but for me personally, it was very hard for me to get into this school and i live in Miramar. If they lower it to 25%, they are just going to make it harder for the kids that live farther away. A lot of people want to get into Nova, and only the people that really want to go here should come to Nova. Nova was made like this for a reason and i don't think we should change it to a neighborhood school, because we would be changing the unique things about Nova. If other kids have to enter a lottery system, i think it is only fair if the Davie Elementary students should do the same. I think Nova is a great school and they should keep it the way it is, and i hope that you do not go through with this proposal.
136.   Benny Lin at 11:12 PM on 10/21/2015
I am not supporting this proposal because Nova Middle school is right now taking in50% from Blanche and Eisenhower and the other 50% comes from the lottery. The way Nova is set up right now is unique. And kids cans get a better education, letting the kids from Davie Middle get 25% will ruin that because the other counties children would only have 25% which is totally unfair. The kids from Davie would have to join the lottery to get in because if they don't it won't be fair. Another important reason why they have to join the lottery is because if we let them get 25% priorty then Nova will become a neighborhood school. This will take away Novas unique way of letting kids into the school and this might even grade average go down. Also Nova middle is a good learning right now allowing the kids to everyone to have a FAIR chance of getting in. Just because they live right across from Nova doesn't mean they are better than anyone else. Nova's lottery lets the people have a fair chance at getting in. Letting this happen will make Nova become a neighborhood school which is exactly the opposite of what the goal of Nova is. These are some of the reasons why I am not supporting this proposal at all
137.   Michael Fecu at 11:21 AM on 10/23/2015
For this decision it would not be fair to the kids who have to wait in the lottery for years before getting in and the kids at Davie Elementary just get to go there because they go to a school that is close to Nova Middle. The kids that go to Davie Elementary should have to enter the lottery like all the other kids that got into Nova. It is not fair to any of the people that work hard to get into Nova Middle. There are kids that work hard to get into Nova and because the kids live down the street they should not be entitled to going because of the school that they go there and should have to go in to the lottery like all the other kids that got into Nova. I am a student at Nova and I had to enter the lottery to go to the school. I believe everyone else should have to enter the lottery.
138.   Langston Locke at 01:44 PM on 10/23/2015
I honestly don't think that this is a really good idea.If some of Davie Elementary's students go to Nova Middle, then those who were supposedly accepted would have to go to another school not as good as Nova.I don't want to sound selfish but it is what it is.Nova students are different from Davie Elementary.Half of Nova Middle's students went to either Nova Blanche or Nove Eisenhower. The other half are imported from other elementary schools and they are special. They are very fortunate to be in Nova.So to top it off,I'll have to say "no" to this proposal.
139.   Niko Villena at 03:05 PM on 10/23/2015
Should the comments section of this proposal become a competition to see which school can get more students to comment on a boundary proposal, Nova Middle kids win. They're older, have more access to computers and clearly have teachers encouraging them to participate. Fortunately, this isn't a popularity contest or a student election. It's about acknowledging the need for change and for common sense. The argument of doing things the way they've always been done just for the sake of doing it the same way no longer holds water. Why push kids outside of their neighborhood, their city, when there is a middle school with AVAILABLE seats that sits right across the street?
140.   Carolina Restrepo at 03:28 PM on 10/24/2015
I am a student at Nova Middle and i strongly believe that Nova is special because of the fact that people from all over Broward county are given the opportunity to try to attend this school. If Davie Elemetary students automatically get to go to Nova Middle after fifth grade, then Nova looses its great diversity of students from many different schools. This boundary proposal should most defiantly be denied because it would mess up the unique lottery system that Nova has.
141.   Shimere Johnson at 03:01 PM on 10/25/2015
I do not support the idea of Davie Elementary conjoing with Nova . I believe that the diversity at Nova will change. The diversity at Nova is one thing that makes Nova special. And adding this idea with take that specialty away. there will be a lesser chance of other student that are not from Nova And Davie Elementary to go to Nova. it would be unfair for children to lose there possible seats just because of where they live . If they wanted their child to attend Nova so bad then they should have started since elementary.Yes, Davie is close Nova but its not apart of Nova system . i believe this is unfair. Unfair to nova and unfair to non-nova people. Their basically shouldnt be a lottery if its unfair, and theirs another one of Novas specialtys gone.
142.   Nikki Corso at 04:41 PM on 10/25/2015
As a student in my last year at Nova Middle,I honestly think that this boundary proposal should be rejected. We (the county)already have a stable system of getting elementary students into middle schools, so why change it. Also, me and the rest of the students at Nova Middle have been put into a lottery and were chosen to go to this school. This school shouldn't be transformed into a neighborhood school. If you were to go to the school and ask 7th and 8th graders if they thought that this school was special, a majority would say yes. I know that I am fortunate to have gotten picked to go to this school. Once again, I want the boundary proposal to be rejected.
143.   Kayla Crooks at 10:30 PM on 10/25/2015
I disagree with the Boundary Proposal C1. It is important to preserve the current lottery system for Nova which makes it a school that is open to all students in the Broward County School District. Nova's longstanding academic record and reputation are proof that this system is successful. The diversity of the student population is also a credit to the current lottery system. The proposed change will most likely negatively impact diversity since a larger portion of student from Davie Elementary zone would be enrolled at Nova. Again, Nova is a school which is open to all Broward County students and therefore the proximity of residents to the school should not be a consideration. The District has schools in place which are zoned for Davie students. Davie residents should not be granted an unfair advantage over other Broward County residents.
144.   julian bhimsain at 05:48 PM on 10/26/2015
I think the boundary proposal should not passed.your probaly
wondering why I said no and I said no for a couple of reasons first of all explain to me why do we have to do that, there are other middle schools in nova boundary why dont you put them there in those schools.second it is not fair to the daive elementary kids that dont live in the davie boundary it would not be fair to them I thought everyone should equal. Also what about the amount of students we are already over crowded, we cant just add more kids. That is why i think we should not to this boundary proposal.
145.   Antonietta Pakula at 08:08 PM on 10/26/2015
I do not think that this boundary proposal should pass because this ruins a bigger opportunity for kids from schools all over broward county to get into nova middle school. By allowing this proposal you are basically turning Nova Middle school into a neighborhood school which is extremely unfair to many students in the county. This school provides a lot of excellent programs for many students. It would really and truly suck to see so many wonderful and exceeding beyond what is taught miss a chance at this special school. Realistically, kids from other schools perform a lot better than kids picked from Driftwood. Although it seems like this would not influence the way nova middle school works, it most definitely would. It is highly likely that things will change and chances for other kids will definitely sink. To conclude, I do not think this boundary proposal should pass because it ruins an opportunity for excelling students and allows only a limit of students to be in amazing programs provided by the school
146.   Trinity Delancy at 09:28 PM on 10/26/2015
I'm Trinity, a student of Nova Middle School, and I believe that students attending Davie Elementary should not be allowed automatic access into the Nova School system. I came to Nova in 4th grade, after 2 years of trying. It would not be fair for Davie to be allowed access, while other schools in Broward remain in the lottery system. Although the students of Davie Elementary are right across the street, they should have no advantage over any students that are coming in from Nova Blanche Forman or Nova Eisenhower Elementary, let alone Broward County. For many years, this lottery system has worked and in my perspective, it should not be changed just because these students live down the street. Please support the Nova Schools in this change. Thank you.
147.   Lillian Peters at 10:07 PM on 10/26/2015
Please support the proposal. This doesn't abolish the lottery system. Why should parents bus their kids more than five miles away when there is a middle school with available seats right across the street? Nova is not a magnet and, thus, offers similar curriculum as other Broward, Florida public schools.
148.   Emily Moore at 10:52 PM on 10/26/2015

I am currently a student at the Nova schools and I would like to share my opinion. I have been going to Nova since I was in kindergarten, and since I found out about it the thing I liked the most was that it took kids in from all over Broward. My mom was extremely happy I got in, because where I am located now the schools aren't the best, and it is a lot of money to send me to something like a private school. Nova is a lottery school, so everyone gets and equal chance at getting in, if you give the Davie kids the preference it doesn't really leave room for the kids who had to wait. So in conclusion, I do not support this decision, because the people who have had to wait that might actually have a chance of getting in this year are getting it taken away from them.

149.   Ashley Garcia at 11:16 PM on 10/26/2015
I believe that this boundary proposal should not be accepted because it will turn Nova into a neighborhood school. Nova should not be a neighborhood school because it has always been 50% from Blanche and Eisenhower and the other 50% is from the lottery and it should just stay that way. This would make the whole lottery system pointless and it would be unfair for the other parents that have patiently waited for their child to get in. Just because they live right across the street doesn't mean anything they should not make Nova a neighborhood school because it would destroy Nova's uniqueness. I strongly believe that Nova is just not meant to be a neighborhood school and it should just stay this way. This is why I believe that the kids that go to Davie elementary should just enter the lottery and hope that they get picked to come to Nova. But Nova SHOULD NOT become a neighborhood school.
150.   Gharam Shalaldeh at 08:51 AM on 10/27/2015
I am a Nova student and I do not approve of this proposal. I myself got in last year when I have been applying since 2nd grade. This proposal is not fair to all the parents who have been applying for their child as it slims down their chances to get in the school. If you accept this proposal Nova middle will be a neighborhood school no matter the percentage of people trying to get in with the lottery system. I say deal with it. This is a unique school that provides many programs that other schools don't have and every child should have an equal chance of getting in. Not only is this unfair but the diversity of Nova middle will be changed due to so many Davie middle students joining. What's a school without diversity? Once again I do not think that you should approve of this proposal.
151.   Vanessa Garcia at 09:33 AM on 10/27/2015
I believe that we shouldn't allow nova become a neighborhood school. We are a special school that shouldn't just let anyone into our school. The lottery system has worked well for nova for awhile, we shouldn't change something thats doing well without change.
152.   Juan Vela at 12:53 PM on 10/27/2015
I am not supporting this program because Nova Middle school is right now 50% from Blanche and Eisenhower and the other 50% comes from the lottery.
153.   Jamie levy at 12:57 PM on 10/27/2015
I don't think this boundary proposal should happen. Nova is very unique as a school and if this causes it to lose its uniqueness this should not happen. David elementary has an equal chance as everyone else to get in this school. The reason why 2 elementary schools get this is because nova is iliterally in there school name. Indian ridge driftwood, Apollo, pioneer are all great schools. David elementary students can get in to those . Many of these parent s should just be lucky they have the chance to get into this amazing school. Nova as I said is unique , and it is critical that this school stays this way. And this will happen through not letting davie elementary get a percentage of our school lottery. This is why the proposal should not happen.
154.   Jahmari Sylvester at 01:10 PM on 10/27/2015
I feel that the Davie elementary kids should not be able to come here to Nova without going through the lotter system. I believe that by allowing more kids from Davie elementary to come with out lottery would cause nova middle school and high school to be a more one are school then to have kids from all over. Also, the school wouldn't have a mix variety of kids from different areas and it would cause nova to have a less mixed variety of kids because Davie elementary has a less mixed variety of kids and allowing there kids to come to nova with out being chosen in a lottery would cause nova to have an overload of one race instead of having an almost equal amount of every race ranging from Caucasian, African American, Asian,Hispanic and more
155.   Eddie Pfitzenmaier at 01:12 PM on 10/27/2015
As a student of Nova Middle School I do not support proposal C1 to modify the manner in which students matriculate to Nova Middle. Such a change would undercut the intention of the Nova Schools model which draws students from all parts of the community. Nova schools are always among the highest rated schools in the county which shows that the concept works. I think that trying to turn Nova Middle into a neighborhood school should be rejected.
156.   Tolu Adeagbo at 01:17 PM on 10/27/2015
I believe we should not allow the Davie Elementary School kids to enter Nova Middle School. Nova Middle and High allows kids all over broward county to enter their school. They use a lot of gas money for the kids who come in. Why would we waste gas on the kids going to Davie Elementary. Davie Elementary has their own middle school to go to. Nova isn't really considered a Public school. We go based on a raffle.
157.   Keren Francis at 01:40 PM on 10/27/2015
I don't support this boundary proposal. I don't think it's fair for Davie Elementary kids to go to Nova Middle also because it's not fair. Not only are Nova Eisenhower and Nova Blanche kids going to Nova Middle, but there are also transfers that go to Nova Middle also. Some kids who attend Nova Middle come from miles away, so the argument that some kids from Davie Elementary have to go to a middle school that is miles a way is not a valid argument. I just don't think it's fair, that out of the blue, they want to allow kids from Davie Elementary to come to Nova Middle. Are they not aware of the fact that it'll affect others? It was hard to get into Nova, so why are they making it easy for them to get into Nova? That's not fair at all. This is my personal opinion.

I am a student at nova middle school so therefore I will be effected by this. I enjoy being at a unique school. Our school is a lottery school unlike many schools but going through with the C1 boundary proposal will take away from how special it is. It would also be unjustified for the kinds who have to giver up their seats because they do not live in that set area and cannot afford one. Our school constantly performs well so why should we risk losing that.
161.   Alejandra Gamboa at 06:15 PM on 10/27/2015
I am Davie Elementary parent and we should be able to KEEP OUR KIDS IN DAVIE!!! I live across the street and is not fair that our children have to travel to another city to attend middle school.

I am completely against the passing of proposal C1 to give priority of Nova Middle School admittance to Davie Elementary school students. I took advantage of the response section on this website to voice my opinion on an extremely similar proposal that was denied last year and urge that the same outcome would come of this proposal this year. As a student that has been attending the Nova School system for 10 years now, we as a school pride ourselves on being a public school that is representative of all of Broward county and gives no priority to any specific group of people. Passing the proposal would do just that: give priority to a group of students just because of where they live. I understand its convenient for Davie Elementary Students, but we shouldn't be sacrificing the diversity and founding principles of Nova just for the convenience of one particular group. No student should be denied the equal opportunity for a quality education simply because of where their house lies within the boundaries drawn by the district; nor should any student be given priority for this same reason. Looking at all of the other comments on this page, a lot of them are written by Nova students: the very people who would be feeling the effects of this policy the most and know the Nova system the best. We may just be kids to some, but we love our school and know whats best for it and its students. All of the comments from Nova students are speaking the same message: for the sake of Nova and all of it's prospective students in Broward County, DO NOT pass this proposal.
163.   Tyler Coburn at 09:07 PM on 10/27/2015
It is my belief that the 5th grade students from Davie elementary school should not be allowed to matriculate into Nova Middle School. One of the reasons that the Davie elementary students from 5th grade should not matriculate is because the 5th graders from other school's do not get this privilege and as the Nova school is a magnet based, Davie elementary should be required to use the lottery as other Broward County Schools do. Also allowing Davie elementary to matriculate would reduce the diversity of Nova Middle School as Davie elementary school is 75% white.
164.   damia fertile at 10:24 PM on 10/27/2015
Hi my name i Damia Fertile and I am a Nova Middle school student I feel like you shouldn't let Nova middle school basically become a home school, because people like me live in places farther from nova but. but its nice to have kids from all around broward county go to nova and not just Davie elementary. I feel like Davie elementary kids should have to do the same thing that other kids should do and not just be able to move right on into nova middle. If they do then nova wouldn't be the school it is now. see these davia elementary kids re going to say they should go cause its right across the street it doesnt work like that because there is also a home school for them to.Let nova stay a lottery school because only the best should get in.
165.   Nicolle caro at 10:28 PM on 10/27/2015
I am supporting this because children that come from Davie elementary should have a chance to came to nova middle school because they should get a chance but for example i disagree that driftwood elementary kids should come here to nova middle school they should go to their home school driftwood middle. To conclude i support that davie kids should come to nova.Davie elementary is local to davie and nova is on davie so why would we make them go farther middle school when they could just come to nova.

This may be a good program for the families located on the north side of Griffin Road; however, what about the families just on the other side of Griffin in the small Townhome communities. We are also Davie residents, who are assigned to Driftwood Middle School and would like our children to attend Nova Middle School. We have the same arguments as you but our area is not included in this proposal. We have to apply for Nova just like everyone else and if you take 50% of the available slots, that would decrease our (and the general public) chance of entering into Nova. I beleive that the proposal needs to be modified to be inclusive to communities within a 3 mile radius or decrease the requested percentage of available slots. I understand your concerns but I also have the same concerns for the children in my subdivision. If this proposal is not more inclusive, I can not support giving away such a high percentage of slots.

It would be absolutely ideal if every student had a great middle school within walking distance to go , and no one had to ride a bus. Unfortunately there are so many kids that live in neighborhoods that have poor schools where kids don't even feel safe walking to school. Most have to take a bus anyway. To all those parents Nova is a school of HOPE. Hope for a better environment. Hope for a better education. Nova was our Hope. The lottery system is Hope for every student regardless of race, religion or economic status. Yes, many students come here as a choice even though there are good schools available to them. Do parents in Davie consider their neighborhood unsafe, school district poor? Let them have Hope in the possible opportunity to go to Nova then. Put in for the Nova lottery and hope, like every other child/parent has done. No one child should be considered more valuable or entitled than the next. Enter the Nova lottery. Keep the Hope of a Nova education for every parent and student in Broward. All our children are equal, valuable and deserving of a great school, they aren't always available but the lottery at Nova gives every child at least a fair and equal chance. We hope you DO NOT support this proposal

Hello, this is Kayla Louis and I am go to Nova Middle School. I'm here saying that kids from Davie Elementary students and other close schools should be able to come in the school automatic or do have to go threw the lottery system either. It isn't fair for the parents also the students. I believe there are better ways to lets students in the school and the ways we are choosing is not the wises.

I don't think we should give David elementary 25% of our school because that will tak the uniqueness out of nova middle people come from all over the county qso they can go to a good school and that makes us unique from all the other schools i think if we make this proposal are school will turn into a local school if Davis elementary students want to go to nova they should enter the raffle like everyone else. That's why I think they shouldn't accept this boundary proposal because it will take away the uniqueness of Nova Middle

I'm a grade 8 student at Nova Middle School and i'm not going to support this decision. I just don't think its fair how all the people that are in Nova Middle now were raffled in a lottery and the kids at Davie Elementary School just slide right on in. In my opinion, its a fair system how it was being a lottery school. I know there is people that disagree with me and I know there also people that agree with me. If we allow students from Davie Elementary School to go to Nova, it will just make Nova go from an "A" schools probably down to a "C" school. When my teacher said this, I was very shocked because I thought Nova was smarter than that. In conclusion, I think Nova should not allow kids from Davie Elementary School to get in without being in the school lottery.

I believe that Broward County should not allow students from Davie Middle to automatically attend Nova Middle. I have been a student at Nova for about 3 years now and our school is one of the best schools in the county. This is partly because of our extraordinary electives such as the Law program and Yearbook, but the other part of being such a great school to attend is because of the students who attend. It wouldn't be fair that the kids at Nova elementary had to go into the lottery and so did the new to nova kids so why does davie elementary get to go in just because they live there. I was a lottery student and if the lottery system is reduced less kids get to get out of their horrible neighborhood schools and get to have a better education. If Davie students want to go to Nova then enter the lottery like the rest of us.
174.   Kerisa Hall at 08:20 AM on 10/29/2015
I believe that kids from Davie Elemantry shouldn't be allowed automatic enrollment in Nova Middle School. Just because it is a neighboring school means absolutely nothing. You should be enrolled in either Nova Blanche Forman or Nova Eisenhower. It wouldn't be fair that even though Davie is nearby Nova, that they get automatic entrance because a lot of kids want to go to nova and if Davie Elemantry and the two Nova Elemantry schools are getting into Nova Middle automatically, then kids from other communities won't be able to get into the school. Many parents want a great future for their kids and they see that at Nova. It wouldn't be fair to the parents if they want their kids to shine and they can't do it at their current school, so they want to go to Nova. Nova is a great school and offers many extra cirrocular activites. Other kids besides neighborhood kids want to experience things like that

I am a student at Nova Middle School and I attended Nova Eisenhower before that. I want to let the School Board know that I am not in favor of proposal C-1 which is trying to change the way students get in to Nova Middle. The change to make some of the seats part of a regular boundary will change the make up of my school and make it more like a neighborhood school. Further, it is a change that would ultimately also impact Nova High as I assume those student let in through the boundary process would matriculate to the high school. The Nova Center has been around for a long time and has been a historically successful model. It doesn't make sense to change it, especially when I think that many of those people who are arguing for it are more concerned with their property values increasing than what is best for a very special school.
Being a part of Nova has given me the chance to meet kids from all over the county and from every background, not just those who live in my neighborhood. Learning to exist and succeed in a diverse community is part of the lesson that Nova has to teach those who are lucky enough to attend. Turing Nova into a regular community school would be a big loss to Broward County. Please don't approve C-1.
176.   Hanna Laverde at 04:06 PM on 10/29/2015
Nova Middle School has been part of the lottery system for many years. The system let's Nova Middle School be a unique school. The diversity comes from having students come from far places outside what would be a neighborhood school boundary. By being outside those boundaries the lottery system even allows for diversity in cultures too. I understand how some parents can feel about wanting their kids to be able to go to Nova without having to join the lottery system, but if local students are allowed to to come into Nova Middle School it can also upset the diversity of cultures that are in place. And, by changing the system and allowing up to 25% of the students come from Davie Elementary School, we can take away the cultural diversity and the current environment that has made Nova Middle School the success it enjoys. The cultural diversity at Nova Middle School is what makes Nova a unique school. And if we start to let students from Davie Elementary, without going through the lottery, then our school would turn into a neighborhood school and it will no longer be as diverse and unique as it is now. Thank you.

Please consider cleaning up the boundary lines for the Davie Families and Put Davie children in our Davie Boundary School of Nova Middle. The Town has long supported this by resolution for a number of years and I hope you will consider the 5th grade class at Davie Elementary as the first class to return a neighborhood school at Nova Middle. Driftwood could become a school of Choice for Languages or other impressive Magnet programs. Less on Busing expenses as well. Thank you.

I think that people from Davie Elemenetary should not just come because their from the Davie Elementary. I like how Nova is a lottery school because you meet different kind of kids everyday. It just will not be fair to people who've been wanted to go to Nova for a long time. When I went to Nova Eisenhower I was so happy because I've been waiting to go there since forever. But imagine how everybody wanted to go here and Davie Elementary gets a free ride. I just think everybody should be treated fairly like everybody else and let them stay line. Plus it is going to be overpopulated and be more crowded. That makes everything worse.
179.   Natalie Lopez at 06:48 PM on 11/2/2015
I am a student at Nova and on my behalf I think it's idiotic plan. I came from one of the schools in the raffle (Oakridge Elementray to be exact) and that means that the kids from the other elementaries get a slimmer chance because of this plan. It'll also cause Nova to be a lesser diverse school since 75% of Davie Elementary is white kids. 25% is POCs (anyone who isn't white, i.e. latinx, blacks, asians), which making if they have a better chance of getting in then POCs will start becoming a minority for every year to come. Another reason why this plan shouldn't go into effect is because then Nova will become a neighbouring school and we want Mova to be as special as it can be with the way it is now, so really we shouldn't change the way it is. The way it is now is what makes Nova special and it should ALWAYS stay that way.

How wonderful to see so much support for this perfect proposal! While the Nova Project made sense in 1960 (as the Town of Davie was an abandoned airfield surrounded by grassy fields and cows), much has changed. It apoears from the comments of the lottery winners at Nova, many seem to concern themselves mostly with "it was tough for me to get in, so it should be tough for Davie kids too". In addition, stop questionning the diversity of Davie students, as we come from different countries, cultures and financial backgrounds. At this point, I"m beginning to wonder if the question should be, is Nova worthy of my children?

#keepourkidsindavie Traditionally, schools have been placed in a community to help the children residing within it. The fact that children can not attend a school located directly across the street from their residence is absurd and unjust. Would you want to travel 5 miles to get medical assistance when you could just walk across the street to get help. Children are really the ones who suffer in this situation. I would hate for my child to waste an hour of her day on a daily basis, to ride a school bus, with little supervision, thru traffic to attend a school 5 miles away. Especially when there is one available across the street. The air of superiority and arrogance demonstrated by these schools is unwarranted and unjustified. These are not magnet schools or schools with any special curriculums to offer. Davie Elementary students are hard workers and deserve a chance to attend a school in their community. Please consider this proposal. The district will save a lot of money on buses and our students will improve the school in various ways.

All we're asking is 50% of the remaining lottery seats to be held for Davie fifth graders. To give them equal opportunity at the Nova quality education.

My daughter goes to Davie Elementary and is in 5th grade and we would like her to be able to go to Nova for 6th grade as a feeder school rather than bussing her 5 miles away when she could walk to Nova.
191.   Rand Lieber at 10:04 AM on 11/12/2015
I object to the proposal. Nova is currently open to all Broward County residents on an equal basis. The only reason offered for the proposal is proximity. That is a poor reason to undermine the current Nova system.
192.   Adriana Almora at 10:29 AM on 11/12/2015
Since its foundation, the Nova School System was created for ALL BROWARD COUNTY RESIDENTS. The Nova model of education is very unique and progressive. The great results of the Nova Schools are very well known: the K-12 model, excelent grades, innovative programs and the success of the students. It's clear, that things are working better in the Nova system than in the boundary schools. Please don't change what is great! Changing the way Nova is doing things, goes against the philosophy and foundations with which it was created, it's a step back in the quality of education and reduces the right of all children in the county to have access to the best
education. In many ways, the boundary schools should do what Nova is doing, not the opposite. Please don't change the best schools we have in the county, because they're working fine!
193.   Lucia Martinez at 11:39 AM on 11/12/2015
I am a parent from students at Davie Elementary and i am supporting this proposal. We have been living in Davie for over 6 years and we dont find it fair for our kids to have to be transported 5 miles away from home when there is a Middle School right next to us. Children should be able to assist this school as they live right next to it. Please support this proposal for all of our children. They should not have to be transported so far.
194.   Juan Martinez at 11:47 AM on 11/12/2015

As a father of students at Davie Elementary i 100% support this proposal. Its our right for our kids to assist Nova Middle School as this is the school that belongs to them! why would the have to g to driftwood Middle School 5 MILES away. We live here in Davie and this his our community and were are children belong going to middle school.

#KeepOurKidsInDavie.

Lets please join to support this proposal.

195.   Tammy Baker at 01:37 PM on 11/12/2015
I do not think these boundary changes should be implemented. The Nova Schools were not designed to be neighborhood schools. What makes the Nova Schools great are their socio & economic diversity, which is obtained from bringing in students from all neighborhoods in Broward County. Davie residents are welcome to attend, but they should go through the same lottery process that everyone else does.
196.   Kenneth Rodriguez at 09:12 AM on 11/13/2015
I am in agreement with the proposal. Davie elementary is an A school and the students would not hurt the Nova school grades. Davie elementary is also a very diverse school with many races and ethnicities represented. This would also not hurt Nova's preference to be representative of the Broward county population. There would still be plenty of seats available in the lottery and it is not unprecedented as this type of accommodation has been done before. I can understand some Nova parents reservations but the truth is this proposal does not change the essence of the Nova system. Sending kids to Hollywood when living in Davie does not make sense in this instance. Thank you.
197.   Tiffany Novembre at 10:41 AM on 11/14/2015

As a Nova parent, I do not support this proposal. Nova is not and should never be a neighborhood school. Giving one neighborhood a significant preference over the rest of Broward County would not only be unfair, but would also be in violation of SBBC Policy 5004.1, which says that that assignment priority for the Nova Schools will only be granted to: dependent childrin of military, siblings and school board employees. All students residing in Broward County have the same -Fair- chance at attaining one of the remaining seats at Nova Schools via the current lottery system.

Proximity to nova Schools should not be considered as a significant reason for change. The majority of children in Broward County do not live within walking distance of a Middle School; they either take the bus or are driven to school. Buses will continue to run in these areas; boundry changes for Nova will not change the amount of taxes required to run them. If proximity is taken into consideration, why only Davie Elementary zone when children zoned for Tropical/Seminole also live within close proximity to Nova Schools? There should be no proximity preference.

Passing this proposal could also negatively impact enrollment for Driftwood Middle (an A rate school that is already under-enrolled) and Seminole Middle, as well as Hollywood Hills High School.

No zone or neighborhood should be given preferential treatment over the rest of the county. The reasonable decision would be to give no preference, other than those listed in SBBC Policy 5004.1. This proposal completely alters the very foundation on the Nova Zone system as being a representative of all of Broward County and should be rejected.

As an educator and an advocate for education, I truly believe that the choices we make in education can alter the path of our futures indefinitely. By fighting to keeping our kid's in Davie, we let them know the importance of education, community, and citizenship. Let's ensure that our kids learn what it means to go after opportunities. Keep our kids, and our parents, and our community leaders in Davie!
199.   Hollie Kwak at 08:16 PM on 11/15/2015
As a Nova Graduate and proud parent of 4 Nova students, I believe that there is no reason to change the current lottery requirement. Every family in Broward County has an opportunity to join the lottery process. Creating a direct route from Davie Elementary or for Davie Residents would alter the demographics, which currently mirror the County demographics as a whole. Anyone who wants their kids to attend should follow the same rules as everybody else. There is no need to divert students from already underenrolled Driftwood. The "Davie" middle school is Indian Ridge. If they want to stay in Davie so badly, why not apply for reassignment there? Opportunities are not being denied to anybody that wants to attend Nova. They just need to follow the same rules as everybody else. Please do not change an already working and hugely successful machine! Davie residents are welocme, just not by cheating the system.

#KeepOurKidsInDavie- As a parent of a Davie Elementary student I STRONGLY SUPPORT the idea to let our kids attend Nova. We have many kids who can contribute to making Nova what it is today. Why waste that talent on another school? Yes there are many who have waited to be chosen and they think it's unfair for things to change but why not accept it? what harm can it bring? Our students and families want to go to a great school that is just crossing the street. We want to continue making our community great, keeping our kids close! CHANGING THINGS NOW WILL NOT HARM OUR CURRENT CHILDREN IN NOVA!!! We will contribute to the excellence Nova has now and make it greater!! WE NEED TO BE POSITIVE AND THINK WHATS BEST FOR THE CHILDREN. REMEMBER, THEY ARE OUR FUTURE! We ALL must contribute to making the future for these kids the best that there can be!!My family and I love Davie, don't let us have to buss our kid like many others while we have spots available right next to us!!
208.   dana johnson at 01:10 PM on 11/17/2015
Please keep our children close to home. Nova is directly across the street from our house and it is insane to drive past a school to attend another. CHILDREN FIRST!
209.   Taryn Young at 11:43 PM on 11/17/2015
I do not support this proposal. I have two children. One attends Nova in Elementary and my son is in 7th grade and has yet to be picked from the lottery to attend the middle school, even having a sibling already in the school. If this proposal goes through, it makes it that much harder for my son to get in the lottery even though he already has a sibling in a Nova school. Nova has remained different and successful because of it's policy on lottery and accepting students from all over the county. Apply like the rest of us that have to drive our kids from cities much further than your child travels to their local school. It should not be a problem for local kids to get on a short bus ride to their zoned schools. It does not save on busing as there is busing for all schools regardless.
210.   Melissa Brown at 11:51 PM on 11/17/2015
Please leave the program the way it is at Nova, leave the lottery program as is so all the kids in the Broward have a chance to get into the school. It has been working for years, please leave it alone.
211.   Allison A at 09:40 AM on 11/18/2015
I am opposed to this proposal. It undermines the intent of a lottery school - which functions like a charter to get in- just because it is more convenient does not mean it is appropriate or fair. I also live in Davie and had to apply for my child to get in just like everyone else and do not agree that this one lottery should favor one zip code, while all others do not. If that is the case, the proposal should be to just make all Nova's a neighborhood school. Plenty of children take buses further than 15 miles to get to these Nova Schools, and the proposal validation that it is closer for these Davie families is purely selfish - they knew the schools boundaries when they bought or rented their home and are more than welcome to enter the lottery just like everyone else.
212.   Joanna Granett at 09:42 AM on 11/18/2015
I am not in favor of Prososal C1
Nova is unique in the way it selects the students. It has worked and has been successful for years.
We, the parents of the current system, had to enter a lottery system, it would be unfair to the rest of the students to have students just come into the school, just because they live in the area. It's not the Nova way. It shouldn't be that way.
KEEP NOVA UNIQUE!
Keep the Lottery System!
The arguments I've heard from the supports do not warrant a change.
I respectfully request that Proposal C1 be rejected.
213.   Tiffany Novembre at 09:59 AM on 11/18/2015
I oppose this proposal. Nova Schools are not now, nor should they ever be neighborhood schools. ALL students in Broward County have the same, FAIR chance at entry into Nova via the current lottery system. Giving preference to anyone because of their address would completely undermine the fairness of this system. In addition, The proposal is clearly in violation of SBBC Policy 5004.1 that assignment priority for the Nova Schools only be granted to: dependent children of military, siblings and school board employees.
214.   Sara Fernandez at 12:58 PM on 11/18/2015
Please have the Prososal C1 rejected. This action will promote a small area to benefit and monopolize an opportunity that is currently intended for all of Broward County. This would also be unfair to future students due to being unable to afford housing within the boundary to get a better chance to get into the school.
215.   Teresa Cisneros at 01:07 PM on 11/18/2015
Respectfully I reject Proposal C1, this action will reduce the chances to get into a Nova school for the rest of Broward residents. All Broward residents should have the same opportunity to enroll their kids in a top rated school.
216.   Jessica Soto at 08:02 PM on 11/18/2015
I want to support davie elementary school, my son is in 4th grade and I would really like for him to be considered for a seat at Nova middle school. Please consider our proposal. thank you
217.   Daniel Luis at 09:21 PM on 11/18/2015

#KeepOurKidsInDavie This proposal is about common sense. Why bus children more than 5 miles away, outside of their neighborhood and city, when there is a middle school WITH AVAILABLE seats right across the street? There is a precedent for this proposal with the Virginia Shuman Young Elm. model, which is predominantly a lottery system but reserves a number of seats (more than 100!) for children from the surrounding neighborhood who apply via the lottery.

This proposal doesn't even go that far. Only after all of the other preferences are considered (sibling, military, employees) would Davie students be given preference -- for only 50% of the seats remaining. Every child currently in the Nova system would go to Nova Middle.

This proposal does not dismantle the lottery or the Nova system. Don't allow emotions to decide. Use logic. Nova is not a magnet school. It's curriculum is in line with typical Broward middle schools. Busing children should be a choice -- not a requirement.

#KeepOurKidsInDavie

#KeepOurKidsInDavie

The school board need not look further than the Virginia Shuman Young Elementary selection process to understand that what Davie parents are asking for is nothing more than already is allowed at VSY.

In fact, Davie parents are asking for a much smaller proposal -- allowing 50% of seats remaining (after other priorities are granted) to give priority to graduating Davie Elm. 5th graders.

Nova's curriculum is no longer unique or experimental. Yet it continues to make it difficult for children in the neighborhood to attend. Children need not be bused out of the city -- many miles away -- when there is a middle school right across the street...with available seats. How many other elementary schools in the county don't have a feeder middle school within city boundaries when there is a school available within the neighborhood?

219.   Cheryl Press-Lavietes at 08:55 AM on 11/19/2015
I am against this bill. Nova has been a lottery school for many years. Suggestion: increase the allowance of kids regarding the lottery program. Nova can still stand as an independent school. The lottery is a program that is built around diversity throughout Broward county. Any child including Davie children are allowed to apply for Nova's lottery. I did it for five years. Diversity is extremely important in today's day and age. Suggestion: ncrease the classroom sizes and add more assistant teachers to satisfy the means of more children in Davie, etc.
220.   Stephanie Moreta at 11:03 AM on 11/19/2015
#KeepOurKidsInDavie- I am a mother of a 5th grader and I support this Proposal C1 that will give preference to our children graduating. Its important to keep our children close to home and family members involved in making sure our children attend school and get home safe being close being 5 miles away causes many problems for those with out transportation to be involved or even those single parents like myself. Please consider our children in Davie to have preference and make this change happen.
221.   Christopher Walker at 05:30 PM on 11/19/2015
If students could travel to a school close to their homes, it has a greater chance to reduce spending on transporting them up to 5 miles from their home instead of nearby.
222.   Dorothy Easley at 05:38 PM on 11/19/2015
Why not allocate a percentage of seats for local residents? Rather than busing, let Davie Elementary students have a chance to go to a good school near home.
223.   Veronica Murray at 06:20 PM on 11/19/2015
I feel that this policy is something that should be brought to the attention of the school board for any families that are in need and within the mileage range of the school to have that potential to have their children attend their school. It would benefit families that don't have the means to get their schools to farther middle schools or go to get their students if they need to get them if they are ill or just need to get them from afterschool activities or what have you. Please consider this.
224.   eligah alexis-range at 06:43 PM on 11/19/2015
I am in support of this proposal because it would be favorable for the kids of Davie.

I'm in favor of this proposal because I believe that these children should have the opportunity to attend school close to home.
227.   alina lorenza at 07:09 PM on 11/19/2015
Student should have the opportunity to have there school accessible to them at all time and by allowing children of the community to attend school best located near there homes is the solution.
228.   Fabio Baldini at 07:28 PM on 11/19/2015
I see stories everyday of how some people are forced to go to school far from their house. I understand the point of schools of giving priorities to other students, but what it is asked in this situation is nothing compared to other requests. A few seats in an area where there is just one middle school is something of small relevance. Maybe helping 5 families is not a lot, but it could change the course of those families daily lives, offering more opportunities to both, children and parents. It like not volunteering for homeless people saying that there will always be homeless people in the world. Life has no price, and changing one is already enough. It would be appreciated by the whole neighborhood if the request could be fulfilled.

why should students travel out of the city limit to attend middle school, when there is a middle school in their neighborhood. It will save the county a lot of money as far as the cost of running a bus.
