Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Mission Statement

STATEMENT
The mission of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is to provide an environment that enables maximum academic growth, intellectual stimulation, emotional growth and positive human relations in order to prepare students for success in the work force and/or post-secondary education.

BELIEFS
We believe that Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School should encourage each student to actively participate in the quest for his or her own human identity. We also believe that our school should assist in the life-long learning process by challenging all students at all ability levels to meet high expectations through critical thinking and risk taking.

We believe that our school should promote comprehensive programs where success is a process, not a goal, where students must accept responsibility for their own decisions and actions as they progress toward the fulfillment of their own potentials.

We believe that students’ self-awareness should extend beyond the individual level and that students should develop an appreciation of and responsibility toward their community and environment.

GOALS
1. To develop a learning environment where students look forward to attending and participating.

2. To teach students that they can learn and how they can learn.

3. To establish a safe school environment that demonstrates respect for individuals and their differences and encourages activities allowing students and staff to learn more about themselves and others.

4. To provide opportunities in the school and in the community that encourage students to make decisions and communicate effectively as they develop values.

5. To develop assistance programs that address personal, emotional and social needs of the students.

6. To promote individual, school and national pride among students, staff and community.

7. To assist the students in understanding the benefits of individual and team activities that broaden their high school experience with the opportunity to participate in curricular and extracurricular programs that encourage the nurturing of talents and interests.

8. To help students understand the importance of personal and community health and wellness as those concepts relate to everyday living.

9. To promote and implement programs that develop environmental awareness.

10.To develop parent and business participation in the educational process crucial to the success of the school and the achievement of all students.
