Dear Parents: Our safari learning adventure continues with much excitement. Coral Park students have all been engaged in a variety of outreach "excursions" to further their learning. Grade levels have participated in a variety of on campus and off campus field trips with several more to come between now and the end of the school year. Each year the district provides us with approximately $2000 to be used towards providing art and science enrichment activities for our students. This year Coral Park applied these dollars towards an in-house art field trip for fifth grade facilitated by Young at Art. Students in kindergarten also benefited from this allocation when they attended Flamingo Gardens in March. It was so exciting to meet our new incoming kindergarten students and families at our 2012-13 Kindergarten Round-Up. In an effort to make the transition to kindergarten as seamless as possible, we are planning a special morning for our future "Coral Park Cub-ettes". On May 1st at 8:15 am, we are inviting all incoming kindergarten students for art, story time, tech-time, and snack! Children will participate in activities in our media center, art room, computer lab, and cafeteria. This will familiarize them with our campus and staff and will increase the children's comfort level. If you know of any families who have not yet registered or would like to come and learn more about our school, please share this information with them. We are in the planning stages for the next school year. On Wednesday, April 18th at 2:15, there will be a School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting where we will be reviewing our 2012-13 proposed budget. If you have been following the news, our Superintendent, Mr. Runcie, has made a commitment to support restoring the specials at the elementary level. At our last SAC meeting, it was decided that Coral Park would like to add back a music teacher and a media specialist. Pending funding, these positions may be part time for both of these areas. This would allow for our curriculum to be enhanced by certified teachers in art, physical education, music and media. You are welcome to attend our SAC meeting and provide input. The one excursion in our safari adventure that is around the bend is our FCAT testing for students in grades 3, 4, and 5. Please be sure that your children come to school well rested, eat a protein based breakfast, and arrive with a positive attitude on their testing days. April 16th through April 27th is the state designated testing and make up days. Attendance is critical during this time. Promotion is determined based upon student performance on the FCAT. If you have any questions regarding your child's academic performance, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher. In addition, our academic coach, Mrs. Scalia is always available to provide guidance and suggestions. Our movie night was awesome--families sitting together under the stars of a clear, comfortable, temperate evening watching "Hop" while enjoying grilled hot dogs, popcorn, and Italian ice. All this for an "admission donation" of a sporting good item! The balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, and sand toys donated will be used by our students during their structured recess. I would also like to thank the Horan family, who donated a WII, four controllers and games for the indoor reward and activity room that we are in the process of establishing for our students. As you know, Coral Park has a beautiful outdoor campus. Our student council is in the process of planning a campus beautification project. We are looking for parents or students in need of community service hours who are willing to weed, trim, lay ground cover and plant plants to join us on Saturday, April 28th, from 8 to 2. Please email eduardo.aguilar@browardschools.com if you are available to help. Plan ahead and reserve May 8th from 6 pm to 8 pm and May 23rd from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. May 8th you will have the opportunity to see your child's art work displayed in our Art Gallery. On May 23rd, each grade level will showcase the work and learning of their students. Further details to follow regarding both of these "excursions"! What a way to bring closure to our yearlong learning safari! Your proud principal, Camille Pontillo
