Medication / Clinic

MEDICATION

School personnel shall not administer or dispense medication to any student without specific authorization. The Broward County School Board will authorize the administration and/or dispensing of medicine by school personnel only under the following situations:

  • There exists a long-term or chronic illness or disability that requires maintenance type medicine and where failure to take prescribed medication could jeopardize the student's health and when the medication schedule cannot be adjusted to provide for administering at home.
  • There is a written treatment plan on file and signed by a licensed physician.
  • There is a written and signed parent consent form on file.
  • The medicine shall be administered and/or dispensed by the school principal or by the person(s) delegated by him/her.
  • All medicine shall be properly labeled (name of child, name of prescribing physician, name of drug, and directions for dispensing).
  • The school must provide limited access and locked storage facilities.

INSURANCE

Accident and In-Hospital Sickness Coverage Insurance applications will be sent home at the beginning of the school year. Premium envelopes may only be mailed or delivered directly to the company's local office as indicated on the envelope. Do not return them to school. Parents are encouraged to purchase insurance coverage. The decision to purchase or not to purchase insurance is an individual family decision. However, we do encourage families to provide some type of insurance coverage for each child.

CLINIC

Students who become ill or are injured during the school day may be excused to visit the clinic located in the front office. A student must obtain permission from their teacher before reporting to the clinic. Limited first aid is administered. Students may not call parents before reporting to the clinic. Notification of parents is the decision of the office staff. If your child has a fever or any other illness, do not send them to school. If you do, you will be called to come and pick them up. We do not allow sick children or children with communicable diseases to remain at school.

HEAD LICE

Over the years, the incidence of head lice among school-aged children continues to be a problem. This is a national problem and Cooper City Elementary is not exempted from outbreaks of head lice. The school will follow district guidelines for preventing and treating infested areas.

Head lice can be transmitted from one person to another. Basically, there are three ways for the transmission to take place:

  1. Direct contact with an infested person's head or hair
  2. By placing clothing of an infested child with clothing of an uninfested child; lice travel from one piece of clothing to another
  3. By sharing personal items such as combs, hair brushes, hats, scarves, bedding, etc.
We would very much appreciate your help. Please check your child every couple of weeks. If you should discover that your child has head lice, please call the school to report it so that we may check students within the class. Children with head lice or nits will not be permitted to remain in school. Children returning to school must be brought to the clinic to be checked once they are free of lice and nits and a pass will be given to them to return to class.

HEALTH SCREENINGS

Florida Statute requires the Broward County Schools to conduct health screenings. These screenings are conducted at various targeted grade levels throughout the school year. The screenings consist of the following:

  • Vision/Hearing: All students in Kindergarten, and grades 1 & 5, entering a Florida school for the first time and students suspected of having a disability. Please notify the school if you do not want your child screened.
  • Heights & Weights: annually in grades 1 and 3. Again, please notify the school if you do not want your child screened.
Trained school or county health unit personnel will conduct the screenings. If a problem is detected, you will be notified by the assigned Public Health Nurse or by school district personnel. If you do not want your child screened in any of these areas, please notify the principal in writing at the beginning of each school year.

If your child has a health problem, please complete and return the Health Screening form found in the First Day Student Packet.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Students are not admitted to school or allowed to attend class without a complete Florida Certificate of Immunization. Students having or suspected of having a communicable disease or infestation which may be transmitted, are to be excluded from school and not allowed to return to school unless they have been successfully treated or present a note from a physician that they no longer present a health hazard.
