Reference and Research

Participants will understand the context of Information and Media Literacy in teaching and learning and the role the research process plays in the acquisition of 21st century skills in a technological society. This course is designed to provide the media specialist or classroom teacher with the strategies and skills needed to assist students to solve their information needs. This course focuses on providing the background knowledge and specific strategies to integrate National and State Information Literacy, and Technology Standards into curriculum planning through the use of FINDS, the Florida Research Process Model.

Duration: 6 weeks

Syllabus

Week 1: Introduction/Review & Analyze Research Models

Week 2: Step 1 of the FINDS Model: Focus on the Information Need

Week 3: Step 2 of the FINDS Model:  Investigate resources to search for an answer

Week 4:  Step 3 of the FINDS Model: Note - Authority/Note-taking/Citation

Week 5:  Step 4 of the FINDS Model: Develop - Presentation/Integrating Technology

Week 6:  Step 5 of the FINDS Model:  Score – Assessment/Evaluation

 

Specific Objectives

Participants will:

  • identify, practice, and apply strategies for embedding information literacy skills and the FINDS research process into their curriculum
  • utilize student achievement data to make instructional decisions when designing information literacy instruction that requires students to locate, evaluate and use information reflecting learning skills and problem solving using a variety of sources accurately and ethically
  • understand the context of Information and Media Literacy in teaching and learning and the role research plays in the acquisition of 21st century skills

Implementation

Participant will collaborate with a teacher or Media Specialist to plan and conduct a research lesson/project using the FINDS Research Process Model introduced and used during class.

  • complete Course Appraisal
  • score at least 80% or higher on post test

To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.

Prerequisites

Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course:

  • an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software
  • the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
  • the ability to download and install files from the Internet
  • an up-to-date antivirus software package
