This course will show you how to integrate and infuse good teaching strategies into Holocaust curriculum. Along the way we will explore prejudice and bias, the state of the world that opened the door for Adolph Hitler to step through, and the use of journaling as a means of reflection and thought processing (and measuring understanding). You will also learn a number of strategies and activities that can be integrated into teaching students about the Holocaust.

Themes thru Literature 3-5 is a six week course dedicated to helping intermediate elementary school teachers teach social studies' concepts through children's literature. Although we will look at the Sunshine State Standards for Social Studies, we will devote the majority of our time discussing why we need to teach the four social studies themes (History, Geography, Civics and Government, and Economics), how these themes present themselves across content areas, and demonstrate how you highlight the themes in children's literature.

Themes thru Picture Books K-2 is a intended to help primary teachers teach social studies concepts through children's literature. With the growing importance of teaching social studies in the curriculum, it must begin in the primary grades. This course demonstrates how teachers can use picture books to teach the four social studies themes (History, Geography, Civics and Government, and Economics) found in the Sunshine State Standards. Teachers will also be provided with quick strategies to reinforce the social studies concepts as well as more in depth activities that exercise the student's critical thinking skills.

Using Documents to Teach SS more information

This course teaches teachers how to use Document Based Questions (DBQ). DBQ is a teaching strategy in which students are given an open-ended or "essential question" to carefully analyze and evaluate primary and secondary source documents pertaining to a specific topic. This strategy enables teachers to build content knowledge, nurture critical thinkers, and develop their students into responsible citizens.
